Day 1 – Cape York Thursday Island Tours – Depart Cairns 730 am and travel through ainforests to the and the Atherton Tablelands via picturesque Kuranda and Mareeba via the Palmer River area famous in the gold rush days, to the Laura Dance Festival site (time at festival available if dates match – biannual event). You can choose to spend the day here, or travel the short distance to the Quinkan Rock Art Reserve, and an afternoon tour of this amazing rock art site. Overnight Hann River Roadhouse BLD

Rock Art Walk – Explore some of the Quinkan Aboriginal Rock Art at the Split Rock art site or the Quinkan rock art at Jowalbinna in Queensland’s premier rock art sites The areas include –

• Giant Wallaroo – “The Cycle of Birth and Death”: Spectacular landscapes and paintings on a walk into Pine Tree Creek valley and up to the opposite escarpment wall.

Day 2 – Depart up the Peninsular Development Road for the Old Telegraph Track (OTT) heading for Cape York. We travel via the Hann River Roadhouse, and check out the Musgrave Telegraph Station. Musgrave was first built as an overland telegraph station in 1887, along with Palmerville, Fairview, Coen, Mein, Moreton, McDonnell and Paterson. It was named after Sir Anthony Musgrave (1828 – 1888) who was Governor of Queensland from 1883 to 1888. These stations were  repeater stations, with great banks of batteries and a generator to boost the power in the telegraph line.  Beyond the township of Coen we pass the old Quarantine Station, and begin to pass a number of exciting creek crossings. We pass through the Mungkan Kandju National Park, a large wilderness park that stretches from the McIlwraith Range foothills, between the Archer and Coen rivers, and consists of open eucalypt woodlands, melaleuca swamps and various rainforest types. The Wik Mungkan, Kaanju and Ayapathu Aboriginal peoples, the Traditional Owners of the park, welcome you to their land and ask that you respect their culture and country during your visit. We take a break at the Archer River Roadhouse, and cross the Piccaninny Plains and Savannah country to arrive in Weipa for a tour of the massive bauxite mine operated by Rio Tinto. Weipa is the largest town on Cape York Peninsula, and has approx 3000 people supporting the mining and export of bauxite and cattle. Nearby is Duyfken Point, where Dutch explorer Willem Janszoon recorded the Australian coast in 1606, 164 years prior to James Cook. BLD Overnight Weipa

Day 3 – Depart Weipa to the OTT, crossing the Wenlock River.  After a stop at the Moreton Telegraph Station, we turn off the OTT to the Bamaga Rd and enter the Jardine National Park and the Heathlands. Be entranced by the unusual change in the landscape. The Heathlands is a vast area of 2 metre high wet anddry heath vegetation which live side by side and is home to an abundanceof wildlife. Enjoy a break at Eliot Falls before we cross the notorious Jardine River. We pass through the administrative centre for the region, Bamaga to Siesia, the “Gateway to the Torres Strait”. 

Today we also travel on to the farthest northern point of Australia to stand on Australia’s northern most tip at Cape York , view the numerous islands of the Torres Strait, and the meeting place of the Arafura and Coral Seas. Overnight Punsand Bay Resort, or  Cape York Peninsula Lodge Barmaga, BLD

Day 4 – At 8 am depart by fast cat ferry for the 1 hour 10 min ride to Thursday Island, passing Friday and seeing Wednesday Islands enroute. Thursday Island is known as Waiben, meaning ‘no water or place of no water’. In 1877, TI  was an administrative centre for the Torres Strait Islands established by the Queensland Government. In the early days over 1000 Japanese pearl divers were operating here. In 1880, Thursday Island acted as a defence post for Australia and old canons remain on the Island. On TI, a 1 hour island tour is included, highlighting local history and landmarks, then free time to enjoy the Torres Strait Islander cultural centre, and pearl, souvenir or window shopping. After lunch, (own cost) the return ferry departs at 2:30 from Engineers Wharf, arriving approximately 3:40. Enjoy free time this afternoon till dinner. Optionally, from Thursday Island your can join the Horn Island tour which visits WWII sites including a WWII museum. This tour also meets the last & only return ferry, and does not give time to look around Thursday Island. Day 5 – Heading south we visit the WWII aircraft wrecks of Bamaga, and skirt the Jardine River National Park, take the Jardine River crossing then a rest stop at Fruit Bat Falls.  We take the road to the coast to visit the beach at Captain Billy’s Landing located on the east coast, and arrive Moreton Telegraph Station (or Bramwell Station)  for a few yarns, a great meal and overnight. Day 6   - Bramwell Station to Hann River Roadhouse - Today enjoy the station life, before we head off down the route of the Old Telegraph Trac,  Moreton Telegrapgh Station, Archer River and Coen for a good look around at this largest stopover on the Cape York Peninsula. In 1623, Jan Carstensz, the navigator of the ship Pera of the Dutch East India Company named a river on Cape York Peninsula after Jan Pieterszoon Coen, the Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies. Today that river is known as the Archer River and the name Coen River is given to one of its tributaries (wikipedia). The Coen district was first settled following the exploration of Cape York Peninsula by William Hann in 1872., and later Gold discovery in the area. The local Aboriginal people were a thread to settlers, so the area was avoided for some time. Travelling south we overnight at Hann River Roadhuse BLD

Day 7 – Today we explore Lakefield National Park. The park is home to threatened species including the red goshawk, Lakeland Downs mouse and spectacled hare-wallaby. Hann and Kalpowar crossings are two of the many significant Aboriginal cultural sites found in the area. Barramundi abound here if you are feeling adventurous, and many waterbirds inhabit Low Lake. Enjoy this rich nature and great waterholes for swimming. Arrive Cooktown late afternoon for overnight. BLD

Day 8 – Cooktown to Cairns via the Bloomfield Track & Daintree Rainforests. The Daintree Rainforest encompasses an area of approximately 1,200 square kilometres, from the Daintree River north to Cooktown and west to the Great Divide, representing the single largest block of tropical rainforest in Australia. The area protected under World Heritage listing covers an area of approximately 12,000 square kilometres, stretching from Townsville to Cooktown 75 per cent of which is tropical rainforest, an area equivalent to about the size of Sydney. We explore and discover the magic of rainforests on our Daintree Rainforest Discovery centre walk.

Cooktown was first established for the goldfields on the Palmer River in 1872, although its also famous for when Captain Cook repaired his ship, The Endeavour, after hitting coral on the Great Barrier Reef. We check out some key local landmarks, including the Vera Scarth-Johnson Gallery, whose artwork consists of illustrations of the flowering plants from the region, the Grassy Hill Lighthouse which is home to the Cooktown lighthouse, built in England and shipped to Cooktown in 1885, the sun dial which is actually a ‘Global Positioning Monument’ and Captain Cook’s Grassy Hill Monument. Also, the James Cook Museum, including canon and the anchor from from Cooks ship, the HM Barque Endeavour and Chinese, Pastoral, Mining, and Indigenous artefacts.

We depart Cooktown via the coastal road (4WD only) and witness Black Mountain National Park, home to mysterious Aboriginal legends. We visit the heritage-listed Lions Den Hotel built in 1875, then spectacular Bloomfield Falls at the Bloomfield River crossing.  This track was the site of many protests and the Daintree Blockade in 1983. The Bloomfield track takes us to Cape Tribulation and on to the ferry to cross the Daintree River. Time permitting, we travel through Mossman and visit Mossman Gorge, and a side trip via Port Douglas. Overnight Cairns. BLD

Day 1 – Gulf Savannah Way Tours Depart Cairns for the picturesque drive to the Atherton tablelands to tour through the Undara Lava Tubes. The Undara Lava Tubes were formed some 190,000 years ago when a major volcano erupted, its molten lava flowing down a dry river bed. As the top layer quickly cooled and crusted, the fiery magma below continued to flow through the tubes taking it further and further from the volcano. The Undara tubes are the world’s longest lava flow. The word Undara means ‘a long way’ in Aboriginal language. One of the lava flows from Undara extends over 160 kilometres (or 100 miles). This makes it one of the longest lava flows from a single volcano on our planet in modern geological time. The original tube formed by the flow extended for approximately 100 kilometres, and several sections are accessible. After our 2 hour tour and tasty lunch, we travel via historic gulf towns of Mt Surprise and Einasleigh to Cobbold Gorge on Robin Hood Cattle station, for overnight. LD

Day 2 – Cobbold Gorge is unique, hidden away within the rugged sandstone formations of North Queensland. This gorge is extremely narrow, closing to only two metres in places, with spectacular 30 metre cliffs on either side. The overall length of the gorge is about six kilometres and includes a series of water-holes and rock falls, with the the last 500 meters is accessible by flat bottom boat. Great walks, swimming and relaxing or optional canoeing. Overnight Cobbold Gorge. BLD

Day 3 – Travel via Georgetown and the multi award winning, Terrestrial – the Ted Elliott Mineral Collection, the largest minerals collection in the world. We follow the Gulflander Railway line via the Gulf Development Road through Croydon which in goldrush days had 7000 people and 122 pubs. On to Normanton, and view the old Burns Philp store, and the 1870 railway history from the goldrush days, plus the hot artesian bore. Arriving  Karumba on the edge of the Gulf of Carpentaria, we enjoy a sunset river cruise. Karumba is the base of the gulf Barramundi and prawning industry and home to many salt water crocodiles. Overnight Karumba BLD – Dinner at own expense in local restaurant – great fresh fish and prawns here !

Day 4 – Burke & Wills Last Camp and Gregory Downs We travel through historic frontier towns, stopping at Burke & Wills Last Camp 119, the site of the explorers' final camp before their ill-fated journey. We visit Burketown, a town established in 1865 to serve new pastoral holdings, then cross the Plains of Promise, a region visited by the H.M. Brig Beagle in 1841. Crossing the Leichardt River, named after the explorer Ludwig Leichardt, we continue to the afternoon, we explore the Riversleigh Megafauna Fossil Fields, one of the richest fossil deposits in the world,revealing a fascinating prehistoric landscape. Return to Adel’s Grove by Lawn Hill National Park (Boodjumulla NP) for overnight. BLD-

Day 5 – Adel’s Grove and Lawn Hill National Park - Today we visit Adel’s Grove, originally an experimental botanical garden established by Albert de Lestang (ADEL) in 1920, before exploring Lawn Hill National Park. Enjoy walks, canoeing, or a swim in the stunning lagoons and rivers with picturesque waterfalls. In the afternoon, Return to the "Helton" at Hells Gate Roadhouse for overnight. Hells Gate is an iconic landmark where settlers once needed police escorts due to the fierce local Aboriginal tribes.  BLD

Day 6 – Police were stationed to provide escorts for settlers to the escarpments of Hell’s Gate, beyond which the Aboriginals were considered fierce. Hells Gate is the routes most western settlement in Queensland and now is a popular stopover with a grassy oasis and refreshments, nearby Aboriginal rock art and caves. We travel via Westmoreland (uranium deposits) and enter the Northern Territory, passing the Redbank (copper) Mine and arrive at Borroloola with time permitting to view the museum and history of this once wild frontier town, now a popular fishing destination. Population is around 800 (about 200 whites and 600 Aboriginal), with Aborigines living in camps around the town. Borroloola has some very different Aboriginal cultures ie the Yanyuwa and Mara are ‘saltwater people’ from the nearby islands while the Kurdanji and Karawa people are ‘mainland people’. Day 7 – Today we walk in the Lost City like towers of the  Caranbirini Nature Reserve overlooking a billabong and across the escarpment
country of the Gulf Region. The Lost City near Cape Crawford can this morning be explored by helicopter from base at the Heartbreak Hotel at Cape Crawford, with an amazing 15 or optional 30 minute flight over these ancient sandstone pillars, (or even landing) formed when all this area was underwater. After lunch we head off on the Carpentaria Highway for historic Daly Waters, and enjoy the amusing Daly Waters Pub and township adornments, including an old helicopter and the thong tree. We take a short tour of the WWII airbase and aircraft hanger here – with a fascinating historic display of WWII equipment, aircraft images and life here at that time.  Overnight Daly Waters BLD

Day 8 – Onwards north through Birdham and the Pink Panther country pub, for a swim at Mataranka Hot Springs and connect with the famous classic outback Australian story “We of the Never Never” by Jeannie Gunn first published in 1907, as an account of the experiences at Elsey Station near Mataranka, Then a short hop to Katherine, the NT's 3rd largest town, and on to to picturesque Edith Falls for lunch and a swim, or simply relax or take a swim by this beautiful peaceful river. Day 1 – From Darwin we From Darwin travel via the Stuart Highway through Adelaide River and Pine Creek with its gold mining history and railway history. Continuing south to Katherine (NTs 3rd largest town) we check out the hot springs in the Katherine River and take a break here. From Katherine we head west on the Victoria Highway through the spectacular Victoria River escarpment country, following the river for some distance. Then to the remote town and Aboriginal community of Timber Creek. Travelling on passing by awesome rocky outcrops we cross the NT / WA border and gain an hour a half to arrive in Kununurra this evening for overnight in a local motel. We check you into your hotel for the evening and enjoy a meal in local restaurant.

Day 2 – Kununurra (airport or town pickup for 1030 flight arrival from Darwin is available). Kununurra is a prosperous centre of mining, agriculture, tourism and Aboriginal art. We take a short tour through the Ord River Scheme of irrigated crop lands, to the Sandalwood Factory. Here we learn of sandalwood types and production, and can sample some of the sandalwood products. Enjoy a picnic lunch by the lake side before a short walk in Mirima National Park also known as Hidden Valley National Park. We check out the Zebra Rock and local Aboriginal art galleries, and complete essential shopping at the Argyle (pink) Diamond gallery.

Around midday we leave Kununurra for Lake Argyle Resort, where we have lunch, before an afternoon sunset cruise on Lake Argyle. Your Lake Argyle Sunset Cruise will take you through ‘the Heads’ to Pintpot Bay and out to the largest of more than 70 islands on the Lake, Hagan Island. After stopping for a refreshing swim in the tranquil waters of the Bay of Islands as the sun sets, enjoy some nibbles with a complimentary beer and wine. Remember to take your bathers and towel as you are able to have a swim as part of your tour on Lake Argyle. Day 3 – Enjoy an optional early swim at the resorts iconic “infinity pool” overlooking Lake Argyle. Depart Lake Argyle Resort, with an optional visit to the historic Durack Homestead Museum which is the original Durack homestead retrieved and rebuilt after flooding of Lake Argyle.. We head off on 40 km of sealed Gibb River Road, under the Cockburn Range to explore El Questro treats including lunch by Jackaroos waterhole by a giant boab before we cross the Pentecost River at El Questro and join an afternoon cruise on the Chamberlain River Gorge.  El Questro is a million acres of spectacular Kimberley scenery, rivers and gorges. Its here that the movie Australia was filmed, nestled under the Cockburn Ranges. After the cruise enjoy a spectacular sunset from Pigeon Lookout over the rugged Savannah landscape and the Pentecost River.Dinner at El Questro’s award winning outdoor restaurant overlooking the Pentecost River. Day 4 – Zebedee hot springs are waiting for us this morning for a warm and relaxing soak in these natural springs among the Livingstonia Palms under the 1.8 Billion year old mountain ranges. An optional gorge walk to Emma Gorge sacred waterhole is available with a swim at the end in the refreshing waters under the waterfall. Alternatively relax in the comfort of the resorts shady garden and fine coffee.

Now we head to Wyndham and local history and highlights, before lunch at Five Rivers Lookout overlooking the spectacular Cambridge Gulf – where 5 of the main Kimberley rivers flow into the Timor Sea. After lunch its the Ramsar listed Parry’s Lagoon (Marglu Billabong) for the rich wetlands bird life including Jabirus and Brolgas, Whistling Ducks, Magpie Geese, waders and more and some quiet time in the Bird Hide.  We now Leaving the lagoon we view old Telegraph Station that played a key role in WWI before joining the Savannah Way / Great Northern Highway for the Bungle Bungles. Our route takes us through Turkey Creek and Warmun Aboriginal Community (famous artists from here include Rover Thomas) and through spectacular rugged granite mountain ranges past the Argyle Diamond Mine and vast cattle stations to our overnight stop at Bungle Bungles Safari Park. Day 5 – Experience the extraordinary Bungles Bungles in Purnululu National Park by 4WD and marvel at this high energy amazing orange and black striped beehive landscape formed by giant river systems. Enjoy an easy walk to the spectacular Cathedral Gorge, amongst the Beehive Domes and Picaninny Creek and after lunch an optional walk in Echidna Chasm or to a nearby Osmand Lookout. Day 6 – After breakfast Halls Creek is next with its gold mining history including the tale of Russian Jack, before the local Aboriginal Art Centre. This is Mesa country with impressive views over the vast grassland plains,  we pass the Tanami Track to Wolfe Creek crater and the “shortcut” to Alice Springs. Take a break at the scenic and bird lovers Marys Pool on the Mary River.  We continue westward on the Savannah Way then lunch at the picturesque Ngumban Cliffs.

An optional 2 hour Aboriginal guided cultural experience at Mimbi Caves (subject to availability) can be included if pre-booked – requires rocky walk in dark cave. Heading west we arrive at Fitzroy Crossing which is an education and supply centre for surrounding cattle stations and Aboriginal communities.  Our afternoon is topped off with a relaxing Darngku Geike Gorge sunset river cruise on the vast Fitzroy River, where we marvel at the high cliffs, annual flood records, stunning wildlife and river tales from our knowledgeable local guide. Day 7 – After breakfast we then follow the boabs and the Devonian Reef / Napier Range to Tunnel Creek, well hidden in the fascinating geology of this limestone reef with its many boab trees and picturesque complex shapes. This is where the Aboriginal freedom fighter Jandamarra and the Bunuba Resistance was centred in the 1890s, depicted in 2 novels and a recent stage production. Here we can don torches and shorts to wade through this incredible underground river system full of stalagmites and stalactites and even an under ground spring. Alternatively, take a short walk in the shady and refreshing surrounding area by the creek that feeds the underground water system.

Travelling on by the Napier Range we arrive for lunch and a short walk in Windjana Gorge National Park with abundant wildlife and numerous freshwater crocodiles in this eerie, ancient seabed environment – where the mega fauna roamed. There are plenty of fresh water crocodiles here and abundant bird and lush plant life.

Leaving Windjana Gorge we travel the Gibb River Road to the Mowanjum Aboriginal Art Centre and Derby township, and view King Sound where Australia’s biggest tides of 10m or 30 ft occur. We visit the culturally significant Prison Boab Tree. 

Depart for Broome to arrive late afternoon, time permitting to enjoy sunset at Cable Beach over the Indian Ocean. Enjoy tasty tapas like treats from the Cable Beach Club Sunset Bar for dinner and drinks by the beach at sunset. PLEASE NOTE: The  4km  walk  from  Punamii-unpuu camp  site  to  the  Mitchell  Falls  will  be  the  highlight  of  your  visit,  we  allow  2 hours  to  complete  the  hike.  The  terrain  on  this  walking  trail  can  be  difficult  and requires  a  high  level  of  fitness.  Care  should  be taken  due  to  uneven  surfaces,  water  crossings,  cliffs  and  gorges.  Please also note that should the Mitchell Falls cease to flow we may suspend the remainder of the Mitchell Falls tour season schedule. Day 1 - Departs Broome via the Savannah Way through expansive Savannah woodlands and grasslands, we cross the Fitzroy River at Willare and stop here for a morning cuppa. We travel on Windjana Gorge in the 300 million year old Devonian Reef known as the Napier Range, and and take a walk in this erie ancient landscape where the dinosaurs roamed. Here we usually see scores of crocodiles basking in the sun.This is where the Aboriginal freedom fighter Jandamarra and the Bunuba Resistance was centred in the 1890s, depicted in 2 novels and a stage production. After a walk in the gorge by the Lennard River enjoy lunch in this special environment in the National Park. We then travel the short distance along the Devonian Reef and majestic boab trees to Tunnel Creek here we don our waterproof shoes and headlight torches to take a walk through the underground river system with amazing stalagtites and stalagmites..We travel then to our comfy night at the the Fitzroy River Lodge at Fitzroy Crossing.  LD

Marvel at the high cliffs, annual flood records, stunning wildlife and river tales from our knowledgeable local guide. Travelling east, we stop for the view and photos at Ngumban Cliffs a picturesque lookout between the Devonian Reef and ancient Kimberely sandstones and mesas. We stop at Marys Pool for lunch which is a haven for birds and crocs before Halls Creek with gold mining history and Aboriginal art centre. Day 5 – This morning  we take a walk up Emma Gorge, or alternative Amalia Gorge, with beautiful waterfalls and great swimming holes before we journey the scenic and spectacular Gibb River Road via the Cockburn Range. We pass by many boab trees to cross the largest river crossing in the Kimberley, the mighty Pentecost River. We take  a break from a high vantage point to view this amazing scene. passing via Home Valley Station the days journey takes us through varying terrain including high mountains and "jump ups", and some great river crossings, including the Durack River. as we travel from East to West Kimberley. Enjoy a break and birdspotting by the Durack. We take a left turn at the Kalumburu Road intersection and cross the Hann River, then a look in at Gibb River Station and a chat with the locals at the local Aboriginal community store, with local Aboriginal artwork. Overnight here or depending on availability at Mt Elizabeth Station. BLD

Day 6 - Nearby Manning Gorge waterhole is a beautiful site surrounded by large paperbark trees and is the largest accessible waterhole on the Gibb River Road. Spend some quality time here, and visit nearby Aboriginal Rock Art before we visit Mount Barnet Roadhouse, at the middle of the Gibb River Road, and a local hub and Aboriginal community centre. We can restock here, and update supplies before we head down the road to an easy 800 m walk to pictureque Galvans Gorge with Wandjina rock art, and an optional swim in the waterhole under the waterfall. Travel on through spectacular Kimberley geology, woodlands and river crossings and arrive at Imitji Community on Mt House Station, with its Aboriginal Art centre and local artists work for sale. We visit spectacular Dalmanyi (Bell Gorge) this afternoon for a hearty walk, an optional swim and great photos, then head to our overnight accommodation at Imitji Bell Gorge safaris camp or Mt Hart.  (depending on availability at time of booking)  BLD

Day 7 – Our tour climbs the Wunaamin Miliwundi Ranges (formerly between 1879 and 2020, the King Leopold Ranges and we travel through the picturesque Inglis Gap and King Leopold Conservation Park. Today more amazing scenery as we cross the Lennard River and pass through the ancient Devonian era Napier Range at Queen Victoria Pass viewing "Queen Victoria Head". Day 6 - Nearby Manning Gorge waterhole is a beautiful site surrounded by large paperbark trees and is the largest accessible waterhole on the Gibb River Road. Spend some quality time here, and visit nearby Aboriginal Rock Art before we visit Mount Barnet Roadhouse, at the middle of the Gibb River Road, and a local hub and Aboriginal community centre. We can restock here, and update supplies before we head down the road to an easy 800 m walk to picturesque Galvans Gorge with Wandjina rock art, and an optional swim in the waterhole under the waterfall. Travel on through spectacular Kimberley geology, woodlands and river crossings and arrive at Imitji Community on Mt House Station, with its Aboriginal Art centre and local artists work for sale. We visit spectacular Dalmanyi (Bell Gorge) this afternoon for a hearty walk, an optional swim and great photos, then head to our overnight accommodation at Imitji Bell Gorge safaris camp or Mt Hart.  (depending on availability at time of booking)  BLD

Day 7 – Our tour climbs the Wunaamin Miliwundi Ranges (previously known as the King Leopold Ranges between 1879 and 2020) and we travel through the picturesque Inglis Gap and renamed King Leopold Conservation Park. This is spectacular mountain country with impressive views over the ranges and vast woodlands and plains. 

More amazing scenery as we cross the Lennard River and pass through the ancient Devonian era Napier Range at Queen Victoria Pass viewing "Queen Victoria Head". Travel via comfortable highway cruising toward Derby, to visit the famous Prison Boab tree, and Derby highlights including the Derby wharf (30 ft tides!) on King Sound, the world’s longest cattle drinking trough, the new Mowanjum Aboriginal Art Centre (meet the artists, learn and buy from source) at Mowanjum Aboriginal Community. Depart for Broome to arrive late afternoon, time permitting to enjoy sunset at Cable Beach over the Indian Ocean. Day 8 - Mitchell Falls walk and swim, Helicopter scenic over falls, Aboriginal rock art, flight from/return to Broome

Day 1 - Departs Broome via the Savannah Way through expansive Savannah woodlands and grasslands, we cross the Fitzroy River at Willare and stop here for a morning cuppa. We travel on Windjana Gorge in the 300 million year old Devonian Reef known as the Napier Range, and and take a walk in this erie ancient landscape where the dinosaurs roamed. Here we usually see scores of crocodiles basking in the sun.This is where the Aboriginal freedom fighter Jandamarra and the Bunuba Resistance was centred in the 1890s, depicted in 2 novels and a stage production. After a walk in the gorge by the Lennard River enjoy lunch in this special environment in the National Park. We then travel the short distance along the Devonian Reef and majestic boab trees to Tunnel Creek here we don our waterproof shoes and headlight torches to take a walk through the underground river system with amazing stalagtites and stalagmites..We travel then to our comfy night at the the Fitzroy River Lodge at Fitzroy Crossing.  LD

Day 2 - This morning and early start to catch the best of the wildlife on a  a relaxing Geike Gorge Fitzroy River cruise. Marvel at the high cliffs, annual flood records, stunning wildlife and river tales from our knowledgeable local guide. If open visit the local Aboriginal Art Centre for unique art works by local artists. Travelling east, we stop for the view and photos at Ngumban Cliffs a picturesque lookout between the Devonian Reef and ancient Kimberley sandstones and mesas. We stop at Marys Pool for lunch which is a haven for birds and crocs before Halls Creek with gold mining history and Aboriginal art centre. Time permitting we visit to the fascinating quartz rock intrusion through the landscape, known as the China Wall, then overnight at Halls Creek. BLD

Day 3 - All aboard for the scenic route through the ranges and deep into Purnululu National Park and the Bungle Bungles to Cathedral Gorge. Learn of the Bungle Bungles heritage and hear some of nature’s hidden secrets. Be amazed on your easy walk into the stunning Cathedral Gorge, and Picaninny Creek where a popular Qantas advertisement was filmed, you will be surrounded by the Beehive Domes for which the park is so famous. After lunch an optional walk in Echidna Chasm or to a nearby Osmand Lookout Optional scenic helicopter flights available – 18 mins approx $300) Overnight Warmun / Turkey Creek. BLD

Day 4 -  Depart via Turkey Creek via the incredible Ragged Ranges past the well hidden Argyle Diamond Mine plus nickel and iron ore mines. We now arrive on the Gibb River Road for El Questro Station, a million acres of spectacular Kimberley scenery, rivers and gorges. It's here that the movie Australia was filmed, nestled under the Cockburn Ranges. Theres time to relax under the palm trees in the Zebedee Hot Springs before lunch at Jackaroos Waterhole by Moonshine Creek. This afternoon take an optional; Chamberlain River Cruise or just relax by the pool at El Questro or take an afternoon walk. Dinner own at own expense at the El Questro restaurant. Day 5 – This morning  we take a walk up Emma Gorge, or alternative Amalia Gorge, with beautiful waterfalls and great swimming holes before we journey the scenic and spectacular Gibb River Road via the Cockburn Range. We pass by many boab trees to cross the largest river crossing in the Kimberley, the mighty Pentecost River. We take  a break from a high vantage point to view this amazing scene. passing via Home Valley Station the days journey takes us through varying terrain including high mountains and "jump ups", and some great river crossings, including the Durack River. as we travel from East to West Kimberley. Enjoy a break and birdspotting by the Durack. We take a left turn at the Kalumburu Road intersection and cross the Hann River, then a look in at Gibb River Station and a chat with the locals at the local Aboriginal community store, with local Aboriginal artwork. Kimberley Broome Darwin via Kununurra Bungle Bungles Tour 8 Days

–  Itinerary –

Day 1 – Depart from Broome travelling through vast Savannah grasslands to Willare on the Fitzroy River. We visit the culturally significant Prison Boab Tree and Mowanjum Aboriginal Art Centre and Derby township. Heading east on the Savannah Way we arrive at Fitzroy Crossing which is an education and supply centre for surrounding cattle stations and Aboriginal communities. Day 2 – We drive through the Devonian Reef / Napier Range to Tunnel Creek, well hidden in the fascinating geology of this limestone reef with its many boab trees and picturesque complex shapes. This is where the Aboriginal freedom fighter Jandamarra and the Bunuba Resistance was centred in the 1890s, depicted in 2 novels and a recent stage production. Here we can don torches and shorts to wade through this incredible underground river system full of stalagmites and stalactites and even an under ground spring. Alternatively take a short walk in the shady and refreshing surrounding area by the creek that feeds the underground water system. Travelling on we follow the range and cross through them again, to arrive for lunch and a short walk in Windjana Gorge National Park with abundant wildlife and numerous freshwater crocodiles in this eerie, ancient seabed environment – where the mega fauna roamed.

Day 3  - We are deep in the Kimberley now, and time for a walk down to stunning Bell Gorge and Silent Grove for a swim and admire one of the highest accessible waterfalls. After this we head to enjoy a swim and relax at the easy to access and picturesque Galvans Gorge with Wandjina rock art, great scenery and good swimming and photos too, before arrival at Manning Gorge water hole campground or if accommodated, Mt Barnett Roadhouse for overnight. Day 4 – Enjoy great swimming in this large picturesque and safe waterhole surrounded by large paperbark trees. A 3 hour return walk to Manning Gorge Falls is also available for active walkers. We continue on the Gibb River road crossing the Hann River, and travelling through Ellenbrae and Home Valley stations. At the Durack River crossing we enjoy a stop on the river bank then traverse several more small water crossings to the mighty Pentecost River and view the stunning Cockburn Range from a high vantage point. Day 5 – An optional 2 hours return walk up Emma Gorge (or alternative gorge) to a waterfall is available or simply relax among the boabs and comforts of the resort.  This morning enjoy the Zebedee Hot springs nestled in the Livingstonia Palms against 1.8 Billion year old King Leopold sandstone escarpments. Warm water flows from here and the springs are a delight for reflecting the journey and relaxing in the true Kimberley way. Enjoy lunch by Jackaroos waterhole,then an afternoon swim in the Pentecost River at the resort, before a cruise 1.5 hr in the Chamberlain River Gorge. After the cruise we take a steep 4WD track to the sunset view over the ranges at Pigeon Lookout overlooking the Pentecost River. BL Dinner own expense in station restaurant. Overnight El Questro

Day 6 – Departing El Questro we travel the top end of the Gibb River Road then to the Bungle Bungles (Purnululu National Park) for an afternoon drive vewing the domes, then a walk in Cathedral Gorge and Piccaninny Creek where you will be surrounded by the Beehive Domes for which the park is so famous. Arrival into the gorge displays a magnificent amphitheatre designed by nature at its best. Relax in this shaded area before returning on your walk to rejoin the 4WD, then sunset viewing of the Bungle Bungles Ranges. Day 7 – This morning we head to the northern end of the National Park to Echidna Chasm for the easy to moderate, 2 km, 1.5 hour return walk up a rocky creek bed, then through a narrow chasm with some large boulders to be scrambled over. Spectacular surrounds and experience.

Departing Purnululu we travel north through Turkey Creek and Warmun (Aboriginal Art centre) via Lissadell cattle station, the ancient Ragged Ranges and the Argyle Diamond Mine.We arrive in Kununurra approx. 5pm for the evening stop by Lake Kununurra at our campsite for the night, or optional adjacent accommodation.  Overnight in Kununurra. Day 8 - Tour completes at 10am after breakfast

Day 1 - Tour commences from Broome 8 am. We travel the Northern Highway through extensive cattle country to Port Hedland. Enroute enjoy a (short) walk on 80 Mile Beach. Visit the Port Hedland docks, exporting the worlds largest shipments of iron ore from BHPs railhead & storage facility. BLD

The Tom Price Rio Tinto Mine – The Mount Tom price mine is owned by RioTinto / Hamersley Iron and operated by Pilbara iron. Day 1 – Adelaide to Streaky Bay via Eyre Peninsula & Pildappa Rock

Depart Adelaide and travel north via Port Wakefield and the Spencer Gulf to Port Augusta. Continue across the Eyre Peninsula through Kimba to Minnipa. Visit Pildappa Rock, a remarkable pink granite inselberg with sweeping wave-like flared walls, rivaling WA’s Wave Rock. Arrive in the picturesque coastal town of Streaky Bay for a relaxing evening beside the bay.

Day 2 – Whale Watching at Head of Bight, Murrawijinie Caves - Nullarbor to Border Village

Travel to the world-class whale watching cliffs at the Head of Bight. During May–October, Southern Right Whales can often be seen calving just metres from shore beneath towering limestone cliffs. 

Continue to the Murrawijinie Caves – featuring a huge doline and two fascinating limestone cave systems used by hawks and swallows for nesting. Temperatures inside the caves may be over 10°C cooler than above ground.

Cross the vast Nullarbor Plain, spotting wildlife along the way, and arrive at Border Village on the SA/WA state line.

Day 3 – Border Village to Norseman via Eucla Telegraph Station & 90 Mile Straight & Eyre Bird Observatory 

Just over the border we visit the sand-filled remains of the historic Eucla Telegraph Station, once a critical link in Australia’s communication line. Shifting white dunes continue to reclaim the structure.

Near Coclebiddy, we turn south toward the coast, we take a scenic 4WD detour to the historic Eyre Bird Observatory, Australia’s first dedicated bird observatory, established in 1977 within the beautifully restored 1897 Eyre Telegraph Station. Nestled between shimmering white sand dunes and woodland, this isolated outpost offers a unique insight into Australia’s early communications history, coastal ecology and migratory birdlife. There is time to explore the museum, walk to the beach, enjoy the peaceful surroundings and experience the sense of isolation that defined early telegraph operators’ lives. Birdlife here is prolific, with honeyeaters, parrots, wrens and raptors often seen around the station and dunes.

Travel west across the expansive limestone plains through Madura, Cocklebiddy and Caiguna, traversing the famous 90 Mile Straight, Australia’s longest straight road.

Arrive in the historic gold-mining centre of Norseman, gateway to WA’s southern goldfields.

Day 4 – Norseman to Hyden via Granite Woodlands & Wave Rock

Distance: approx. 460 km (including 4WD detour)

Depart Norseman this morning and travel west through classic goldfields country before joining the remarkable Granite and Woodlands Discovery Trail, an iconic outback route stretching across 300 km of pristine eucalypt woodland, salmon gums and granite outcrops. This remote track offers a peaceful contrast to the highway, with interpretive stops along the way and opportunities for wildlife sightings, photography and quiet reflection in one of Australia’s last great untouched woodland systems.

Rejoining the inland route, we travel through salmon gum woodlands and rich wheatbelt country toward Hyden, arriving late afternoon at one of Western Australia’s most iconic natural wonders: Wave Rock. This striking 15-metre-high granite wave, formed over 2.7 billion years, curves dramatically like a cresting ocean swell frozen in time. Nearby features include Hippo’s Yawn, Gnamma Holes, interpretive trails and, in season, vibrant displays of wildflowers including everlastings, grevilleas and orchids.

Day 1 – Depart Perth via the Indian Ocean Drive for Nambung National Park up the West Australian Coast. Enjoy the atmosphere of the surreal limestone Pinnacles of upright stones. Continue via coast road to Cervantes and Jurien Bay via the beautiful Beekeepers Nature Reserve to the City of Geraldton-Greenough. We visit the WA Museum Geraldton and the HMAS Sydney Memorial for stunning views over the city and ocean. Overnight Geraldton

Day 2 – Then to Kalbarri National Park via the scenic coastal drive. Explore Kalbarri National Park and visitors centre, plus stunning walks and spectacular coastal cliff lookouts and inland gorges. Kalbarri National Park includes the Murchison River gorge which runs for nearly 80 km on the lower reaches of the Murchison River through the red and white banded sandstone to create formations such as Nature’s Window and The Loop, Z-Bend and Hawks Head, with scenic gorge views at the Ross Graham Lookout and views of the town and river mouth at Meanarra Hill.Enjoy sunset views and dinner in town. Day 3 – Heading north, we meet the friendly dolphins of Monkey Mia followed by a boat cruise on the marine rich waters of the bay. Visit Eagle Bluff with big bay view, and shark and dugong sightings. We visit the Shark Bay World Heritage Discovery Centre and learn about the bay’s history, culture and why it is one of the few places on earth to meet all four natural criteria for World Heritage listing.. Day 4 – Check out the dolphins and local sights and visit the ancient Stromatolites of Hamelin Bay and the 120km long Shell Beach, two of the unique natural attractions in the area. Back on the scenic route to this agricultural area and Overnight Carnarvon

Day 5 – Today enjoy Coral Bay to explore the world’s largest fringing Ningaloo Reef. It is situated only metres from the shore in places and has over 500 species of tropical fish and 250 corals along with the world’s largest fish, the giant whale shark (late March-July) and Humpback Whales (June-November). Coral Bay is located right on the Ningaloo Reef, and is a snorkeler's and divers paradise and offers safe swimming. Charter boats are available for diving and fishing. From here we take the fascinating sandhills road toward Exmouth and a visit the spectacular scenery of Charles Knife and Shothole Canyon in the Cape Range National Park. Optional Ningaloo Reef cruise, glass bottom boat or whale swim. We also visit a monument as a tribute to Operation Jaywick.This operation involved the “Krait”, a captured Japanese fishing vessel. Day 6 – 7 – We head for Tom Price and Karijini National Park via Nautarra Roadhuse. Day 8 – Morning walk opportunity in nearby Joffre Gorge then departure for Tom Price (mine tour optional) before we head for Hammersley Gorge and down the Rio Tinto private Railway Road, witnessing the largest trains in the world carrying Iron Ore to Karratha docks. Day 9 – Explore Burrup Peninsula rock art, the largest rock art site in the worlds, with petroglyphs estimated around 25-30 million years old. Here also is one of the worlds largest LNG liquefied gas plants processing offshore gas for export. We learn at the visitors centre and witness this modern industrial phenomenon in that brings massive wealth to Australia. The Red Dog memorial is also nearby at Dampier and he’s always happy to see visitors. After lunch by the beach, we head up through scenic Pilbara landscapes and river crossings to Port Hedland for overnight.

Day 10 – Witness the BHP operated Port Hedland docks and massive shipping traffic in this busy port before we head for 80 Mile Beach and a short walk in the sand and optional swim. We cross the mighty De Grey River, travelling through cattle grazing country and visit Pardoo & Sandfire and arrive Broome late afternoon

Day 4 – Today we pass by desert sand dunes, gibber plains and hot springs as we heading north to Innamincka. We pass by Lake Callabonna, where Diprotodon and numerous Australian megafauna roamed in swampy terrain when this was the eastern most shore of Australia. There are many remains of ancient beasties here, and the country makes it easy to imagine this other world of many millions of years ago. At Mt Hopeless (aptly named) we join the Strzelecki Track, we pass Merty Merty homestead and on via the vast oil and gas fields of Moomba and the Delta gas fields to enter the Innamincka Regional Reserve area, and famous Innamincka township on the banks of the notorious Cooper Creek.  An optional Cooper Creek cruise (if running and time permits) is in order before dinner at the Innamincka pub.

Day 5 – Today we visit the Burke & Wills dig tree, were the ill fated explorers arrived too late for their support party, and did not respond to the message on the tree to dig, where supplies were buried that could have saved their lives. We do though enjoy the prolific birdlife near here and unique flora before heading up the track, passing the largest shearing shed in Australia and the ruins of Cadelga Downs station, (alternatively via Haddon Corner, depending on road conditions) over the Queensland border to arrive Birdsville for overnight. Day 6 – Birdsville is an icon of the outback, attracting outback travellers to connect with the frontier history of this landmark town. Birdsville used to be the customs post for goods and cattle travelling to and from South Australia before Federation. It was the route used by the great cattle drovers, including S. Kidman & Co, and there’s plenty of this history to experience in Birdsville, especially at the local museum, adjacent the tasty treats of the Hard Road Cafe. Today we visit Big Red, the Simpson Desert’s biggest sand hill, and see Burke & Wills marked tree on the  Diamantina River. An optional flight over the Simpson Desert and Goyder Lagoon is available here. We head off south on the Birdsville Track following the spectacular Diamantina River past Pandie Pandie station and Goyder Lagoon. Time and track conditions willing, we visit Kalamurina Wildlife Sanctuary & Station, part of the Australian Wildlife Conservancy for overnight, or alternatively overnight at Mungeranie Roadhouse on the Birdsville Track. Day 7 – Arriving in Marree, explore this once thriving railway town that helped save Darwin during WWII with 56 trains per week! Marree is at the junction of the Birdsville and Oodnadatta Tracks, and the path of the Great Northern  Railway / Old Ghan for over 100 years, so lots of history here including Aboriginal museum and history, Tom Kruse (Outback Mailman from “Back of Beyond”) and Donald Campbells Bluebird story. Take an optional 1 or 2 hour scenic flight over Lake Eyre to see the Warburton Groove, the main inflow channel to Lake Eyre, Elliot Price Conservation Park, Halligan Bay, Lake Eyre South and the Marree Man (a 4 km long, giant engraving in the landscape). On return to base, we see some of the sights of Marree, this once thriving Ghan Railway town. Marree is caretaker for some interesting railway relics, plus the old mail truck used by legendary outback mailman Tom Kruse on the run from Marree to Birdsville. We visit the shores of Lake Eyre south and connect with the wonder of the bird and plant life which becomes revitalised after flooding rains. We also see the fascinating Mound Springs bringing water up from the Great Artesian Basin. Overnight in Marree with a few yarns around the campfire or at the local pub. BLD

Day 8 – Today we visit the restored ruins of the old Ghan railway town of Farina, which once supported 300 people. We view the giant Leigh Creek coal mine, enjoy a break at the Quandong cafe at Copley and travel via old Ghan railway towns to Parachilna, and in the foothills of the Flinders Ranges to Hawker and picturesque mountain landscapes to arrive in Adelaide around 6pm, delivered to your accommodation or airport connection. Day 1 - Depart Broken Hill (or Adelaide day prior) through the Barrier Ranges on the Silver City Highway via Packsaddle for Milparinka and the Albert Hotel. Appreciate this once thriving gold mining town at the restored Milparinka Heritage Precinct. We check out the Tibooburra pub and considerable town before heading into the Sturt Desert & crossing the Grey Range with a stop at Fort Grey. The park protects an enormous arid landscape of space and solitude. The rolling red-sand dunes of the Strzelecki desert ripple through the western section, graduating past surprising wetlands surrounded by white sands. After some great opportunities for photos, and to explore we arrive at Cameron Corner on the 3 states corner (NSW, SA & QLD) for a welcome meal and overnight at the "Corner Store" and hotel.

Day 2 - Travel via Bollards Lagoon, the Yellow Bus and Merty Merty station, crossing the sand hills of the Strzelecki Desert, and Creek as we head for the Strzelecki Track and the uncanny Moomba oil & gas fields. We pass the geothermal power plant / hot rocks project of Geodynamics where Australia has the hottest rocks on Earth, outside of volcanic areas.

Geologists think that 10 million years ago, the granites in the Cooper Basin, South Australia, were exposed at the surface. Since that time they have been covered by a sedimentary layer, four kilometres thick, that acts as an overlying blanket; trapping the heat and preventing it from escaping to the atmosphere.

The heat is created by naturally occurring radiogenic decay that heats the granite to more than 250 degrees Celsius. The granite temperatures in Europe are only 180 degrees Celsius. The granite belt in the Cooper Basin is fractured in horizontal layers and these fractures naturally contain water at very high pressures – up to 5, 000 pounds per square inch. Check out the birdlife at sunset on the flooding Cooper Creek before a delicious meal at the Innamincka Hotel, adjacent the Australian Inland Mission hospital, restored as National Parks offices.

Day 3 - A chance for an early walks and look at creek side birdlife - and quirky Innamincka - before we head for the S/ QLD border and Nappa Merrie Station (once owned by S. Kidman & Co) to the Burke & Wills Dig Tree. Here Burke & Wills support team waited 4 months and 5 days and provisions were buried for the northern explorers. The support left in the morning of the same day before Burke & Wills returned, but they were too weak to follow. Lots of history, and birdlife here on the infamous Cooper Creek. Heading south we travel through picturesque desert then sand hill country via Orientos, Santos and Sullivans Tank before crossing the border into NSW at the Warri Gate on the Dingo fence, and once again into the Sturt Desert. Taking in vast stony plains, the towering red-sand hills of the great Strzelecki Desert and the unusual flat-topped mesas around the Olive Downs, this park covers 340,000 hectares of classic outback terrain. Thanks to the protection of the dingo-proof fence, there are large populations of western grey and red kangaroos. We arrive Tibooburra for dinner & overnight at the local hotel in this most remote NSW desert town.

Day 4 - Time to explore Tibooburra, and the Outdoor Pastoral Museum.  Flat-topped mesas and fantastic views characterise the central Jump-Up country. Remnant gidgee woodland, the catchment system of the ephemeral Twelve-Mile Creek and gibber and grass-covered plains dominate the east, while 450 million year old granite tors surrounding Tibooburra form part of the southern boundary of the park. We leave town and  head for Pooles Grave & Depot Glen where in 1845 Charles Sturts men were stranded and lay camp. Travelling south via salt lakes and vast plains we arrive Broken Hill late afternoon wth manay a tale to share.

Day 1 – Depart your Sydney hotel or accommodation at 730 am and enjoy the fresh early light and air of the spectacular Blue Mountains. Visit Katoomba, Leura, Echo Point, Three Sisters, Jamieson Valley (Grand Canyon) and Cliff Drive over Megalong Valley before a morning tea at Govett’s Leap near Blackheath, overlooking the Grose Valley and spectacular Blue Gum Forest in the Blue Mountains. OPTIONAL EXTRA NIGHT IN BLUE MOUNTAINS

Descent the 1500 metres of the Great Dividing Range and from Pearson’s Lookout view the Blue Mountains region and Wollomi National Park in this World Heritage area. Enjoy a tasty lunch at a Winery in Mudgee and enjoy wine tasting. Travel on through old gold mining towns, and historic Gulgong – the town that was on the $10 note. Dine at own expense in town (numerous options) and consider a visit to the Sky Watch Observatory to view the night sky through their giant telescope. Day 2: After a healthy breakfast see wild kangaroos and emus as we travel through Warrumbungle National Park. On the 4 day tour we have time to take a short bushwalk to see the spectacular view of the Breadknife and surrounding mountains in this unique volcanic region. Also available is a close-up visit to the large 3.9-metre diameter optical telescope at the Anglo-Australian Telescope facility at Siding Springs in the Warrumbungles. Siding Spring Observatory houses over 60 telescopes from institutions across the world including, Korea, America, the UK, Poland, Hungary, Germany and Russia. Day 2 - The Rail Ride - Ride the steam train Pitchi Ritchi Afghan Express from Pt Augusta to Quorn, Inspect steam engines, engine sheds and yards

Depart Port Augusta railway Station 10:30 am - See the ancient Flinders Ranges landscape unfold before you on the full-day Afghan Express from Port Augusta Railway Station to the historic outback railway town of Quorn.

Travelling the old Ghan route over red earth and bluebush plains from Port Augusta, you'll watch the ranges creep ever-closer before entering the Pichi Richi Pass with its rocky outcrops, dry riverbeds and beautiful hilly scenery.

The Afghan Express is the name railwaymen gave to the passenger train that ran from Terowie to Oodnadatta, through Quorn, in 1923. In time, this was abbreviated to the Ghan.

The railway was ultimately extended to Alice Springs by 1929. The Ghan
used the Pichi Richi Railway route until 1956 when a new standard-gauge
railway from Stirling North to Brachina bypassed the narrow gauge
railway through the Pichi Richi Pass.

• Full day journey from Port Augusta to Quorn  - 74 km return
• Approximately 2 hour journey each way, with morning tea at Woolshed Flat
• Wherever practicable, original Ghan steam locomotive NM25 and genuine timber-bodied carriages built in the late 1920s will be used
• Diesel services use an historic Ghan locomotive, either NSU52 or NT76
• Departs Port Augusta at 10.30 am, and arrives at Quorn at approximately 12.15 pm for 1 hour stop, then return journey.

Day 3 - Leaving Port Augusta we have more time in Quorn, and steam angels willing, an engine shed and workshop tour. Closed-in footwear must be worn. We now travel by 4WD visiting railway towns and history of Hawker, Kanyaka Station, Marree, Beltana, Farina, Parachilna, see the Leigh Creek coal mine site, In Marree see the Old Ghan loop & cattle yards, 2 Old Ghan engines, 2 rail gauge platform, Tom Kruse “Outback Mailman” truck Tom Kruse museum and the Marree Rail History Museum - overnight Marree Hotel

Day 4 - Travel the Oodnadatta Track following the Old Ghan track and OT line visiting active Mound Springs and railway stops enroute including to Curdimurka, Beresford and Margaret Siding to Coward Springs (hot spa available) to view the Ghan Engineers Shed and museum - Onwards to Strangeways (Telegraph Station site)  and Angeldool to William Creek Rocket Park and  William Creek hotel for overnight

Day Two: Following Dinosaur Footsteps
Dawn breaks over Lake Fred Tritton, offering photographers a symphony of light and color. Our journey to Muttaburra takes us to the very spot where the first Muttaburrasaurus was unearthed. The historic Muttaburra Hotel serves up both lunch and legends. Winton beckons with its crown jewel - the Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum. The day's crescendo comes at Lark Quarry Conservation Park, where you'll witness the world's only known dinosaur stampede site. Tonight, rest at the iconic North Gregory Hotel, birthplace of "Waltzing Matilda."

Day Three: Legends Take Flight
Longreach greets us with the proud legacy of Australian aviation at the Qantas Founders Museum. The Australian Stockman's Hall of Fame brings to life the legends of the outback's most remarkable characters. Traditional billy tea and damper fuel our spirits before we continue to Blackall, home of the legendary Black Stump. Day Four: Workers' Heritage to Prehistoric Wonders
Morning finds us in Barcaldine, where the Tree of Knowledge stands as a silent sentinel to Australia's labor movement. The CSR includes 51 wells and stretches 2,013 kilometres from Halls Creek to Wiluna in Western Australia. The Canning Stock Route now forms one of the most remote and challenging four wheel drive tracks in the world…. Our route takes us via awesome desert landscapes as we travel via the Great Sandy Desert, Tanami and Gibson Deserts through gibbers, sandhills, ancient ranges and salt lakes

Canning Stock Route Tour

Canning Stock Route Tours – see note at the end re from Alice Springs
 

Day 1 – Alice Springs depart 7 am for Tanami Track with stops at Tillmouth Well and Yuendumu. Visit the World renowned Warlu Aboriginal Art centre here. Remote desert travel via Renner Springs, and Tanami Gold Mine to camp that evening under the stars near Rabbit Flat. BLD

Day 2 - After breakfast, we depart to see more remote gold mines, and cross the WA border. We meet the group from Broome for overnight.  B, L, D

Day 3 – Heading south to arrive at the Aboriginal community and owned cattle station of Billilluna, the start of the Canning Stock Route. From here we pass by waterholes of Streak Lagoon and check out the birds and wildlife. 

We visit Bloodwood Bore and Wells 51 and 50, before stopping for our overnight camp at the restored Well 49, the Crystal Well.

Day 4 – On the track again we stop at Wells 48 and 47 then it’s into the sand dunes with their unique vegetation and wildlife to arrive at Well 46 for overnight.

Day 5 - We are now in the Great Sandy Desert and check out Wells 45 & 44, and take a break at Gravity Lakes. From Well 43 we head over the Guli Lake System and past Well 42 to stop for overnight amongst the trees near Helena Springs track.

Day 6  - Enjoy the remote early morning nature of this area before arrival at Well 41, known by the locals as 'Tiru'. This was a popular resting spot for the drovers due to good feed here for their cattle. We head south to cross Lake Tobin then to Well 39, where lots of water here attracts abundant bird life including budgerigars. Wardabunni Rockhole & Well 38 is reached today, where we enjoy another night under the stars.

Day 7 - After another great breakfast we arrive at Well 37, where lay the graves of 3 early drovers who died under mysterious circumstances. We learn more of the mystery and their fate at the site, and numerous other stories of early pioneers before Well 36. Travelling on we visit Well 33 then overnight in comfortable and modern style rooms at the Kunawarritji Aboriginal Community. Here we have abundant water and a chance to catch up on personal laundry.

Day 8 – At Kunawarritji Aboriginal Community and store we can do personal shopping and restock some essential supplies & fuel. These remote communities are always fascinating insights into remote desert life. Onwards we visit Wells 32, 31 and 30 (known as Duna Jinnda). After lunch we travel to Thring Rock, a sandstone outcrop with a lookout we climb for a great view of the landscape, before our overnight camp nearby.

Day 9 - More sand dunes today before Well 27, then the rebuilt Well 26 with good drinking water. We take a break here and stock up with water, then travel to shady Well 25 for lunch under the Desert Oaks before arrival at Well 24 for overnight camp. 

Day 10 – We are now also on part of the Talawana Track, which is a direct route to Newman. We see the Capricorn Roadhouse Fuel dump where many Canning trekkers still arrange fuel drops from Newman. Travel on to Georgia Bore, which was sunk in the 1970’s by CRA survey crews. Lake Disappointment is a large salt lake and our goal today. Named by explorer Frank Hann after he was expecting to find a freshwater lake. Overnight and sunset by the lake shore at Lake Disappointment.

Day 11 – We travel several kilometres by the shores of Lake Disappointment to Savory Creek crossing (or diversion crossing depending on water levels) and Well 19. After lunch we visit Onegunyah Rock Hole before majestic Durba Springs where we spend 2 nights in this restful shaded and well watered area.

Day 12 - Durba Springs is known as 'Jilikuru' by the local Martu people, who made this area their home. Elaborate Aboriginal rock art sites are here, and we walk through the Durba Hills area viewing these rock art galleries. Enjoy lunch back at camp and a relaxing easy afternoon as the drovers and cattle did in the good old days.

Day 13 – We leave this little haven and head for Well 16 with its challenging history then the lookout at Well 15 enables a wider view of this incredible landscape. Wells 14 and 13 are visited, then the restored Well 12 with good drinking water.   Then on to wells 11 & 10 and MacConkey Hill for our camp under a starry sky.

Day 14 – Today takes us to Weld Springs (Well 9) and the edge of Glen-Ayle Station, where WA’s first premier John Forrest built a fort in 1874 to defend against Aborigines. We travel off the CSR here to Glen-Ayle Station and then to Wiluna for refuelling, before overnight camp at the southern end of Canning Stock Route.

Day 15 - From our last camp here we travel to the BHP mining town of Newman and check into our welcome hotel after lunch. You can explore Newman or just catch up with all those photos at your leisure. Group dinner this evening in Newman.

Days - 15-22 - Alice Springs tour returns on Gunbarrel Highway & Great Central Road (surveyed by Len Beddell) via Carnegie Station, Everard Junction, Warburton (great Aboriginal art work), Giles Weather Station, Schwerin Mural Crescent, Docker River, Uluru, overnight Alice Spring overnight completes 5pm Day 19

Canning Stock Route Tours – Itinerary from Broome to Alice Springs 

Day 1 – Broome - Meet in Broome at 6 pm for evening meal with your guide and fellow travellers at our groups pre-arranged accommodation. Enjoy your leisure time in Broome during the day and join us for a debriefing and group dinner that evening and a good nights rest before the big adventure.

Day 2 - After breakfast we depart via the vast savannah grasslands, majestic Boab trees and powerful mountains of the Western Kimberley crossing the Fitzroy River near Willare. Travelling on we stop at a giant boab tree over a thousand years old, and appreciate more of the uniqueness of these trees. We travel via the Erskine Ranges to historic Fitzroy Crossing where we have time to visit the local Aboriginal Art centre and purchase art if desired. We travel adjacent the Napier Range, the ancient Devonian era limestone reef that was formed 350 million years ago by coral like creates, when this area was under seawater. Enjoy a delicious picnic lunch by the Fitzroy River. Travel on viewing ancient mesas and stopping at scenic Ngumban Cliff lookout, and later Marys Pool, popular with many native birds, and crocodiles. We arrive Halls Creek Hotel for overnight.  B, L, D

Day 3 – Leaving Halls Creek we take the Tanami Track road south toward Alice Springs and Wolf Creek Crate. We travel via Ruby Plains, and vast cattle station still owned and operated by S. Kidman & Co the pioneering pastoralist who ruled the cattle country of the late 18 & 1900s.  We travel by and see Wolfe Creek Crater, the world 2nd largest meteorite crater, before arrival at the Aboriginal community and owned cattle station of Billilluna, the start of the Canning Stock route. From here we pass by waterholes of Lake Gregory (bird watchers paradise) by the Paraku Indigenous Protected Area and check out the birds and wildlife.     Paruku is the Walmajarri name for Lake Gregory. Paruku/Lake Gregory is the only lake in the region with a reliable source of fresh water for large numbers of birds and other animals, supporting over 70 species of waterbirds and 175 aquatic species. Surrounded by hundreds of kilometres of arid desert lands, these wetland oases are fed from a catchment in the south-east Kimberley region. More than 100,000 birds visit the wetlands regularly, with up to 60,000 estimated at Mulan Lake at any one time.Paruku IPA encompasses a variety of desert and semi-desert landscapes undulating red sand plains, salt pans and occasional dunes with stunted eucalyptus. It is dotted with acacias and spinifex, flood plains with swathes of short grasses and low shrubs, and alluvial plains and sand rises. Our overnight camp at the restored Well 49, the Crystal Well.

Day 4 – On the track again we explore Breaden Pool and Godfrey's tank – named in 1896 after members of David Carnegie’s expedition. We stop at Wells 48 and 47 then it’s into the sand dunes with their unique vegetation and wildlife to arrive at Well 46 for overnight.

Day 5 - We are now in the Great Sandy Desert and check out Wells 45 & 44, and take a break at Gravity Lakes. From Well 43 we head over the Guli Lake System and past Well 42 to stop for overnight amongst the trees near Helena Springs track.

Day 6  - Enjoy the remote early morning nature of this area before arrival at Well 41, known by the locals as 'Tiru'. This was a popular resting spot for the drovers due to good feed here for their cattle. We head south to cross Lake Tobin then to Well 39, where lots of water here attracts abundant bird life including budgerigars. Wardabunni Rockhole & Well 38 is reached today, where we enjoy another night under the stars.

Day 7 - After another great breakfast we arrive at Well 37, where lay the graves of 3 early drovers who died under mysterious circumstances. We learn more of the mystery and their fate at the site, and numerous other stories of early pioneers before Well 36. Travelling on we visit Well 33 then overnight in comfortable and modern style rooms at the Kunawarritji Aboriginal Community. Here we have abundant water and a chance to catch up on personal laundry.

Day 8 – At Kunawarritji Aboriginal Community and store we can do personal shopping and restock some essential supplies & fuel. These remote communities are always fascinating insights into remote desert life. Onwards we visit Wells 32, 31 and 30 (known as Duna Jinnda). After lunch we travel to Thring Rock, a sandstone outcrop with a lookout we climb for a great view of the landscape, before our overnight camp nearby.

Day 9 - More sand dunes today before Well 27, then the rebuilt Well 26 with good drinking water. We take a break here and stock up with water, then travel to shady Well 25 for lunch under the Desert Oaks before arrival at Well 24 for overnight camp. 

Day 10 – We are now also on part of the Talawana Track, which is a direct route to Newman. We see the Capricorn Roadhouse Fuel dump where many Canning trekkers still arrange fuel drops from Newman. Travel on to Georgia Bore, which was sunk in the 1970’s by CRA survey crews. Lake Disappointment is a large salt lake and our goal today. Named by explorer Frank Hann after he was expecting to find a freshwater lake. Overnight and sunset by the lake shore at Lake Disappointment.

Day 11 – We travel several kilometres by the shores of Lake Disappointment to Savory Creek crossing (or diversion crossing depending on water levels) and Well 19. After lunch we visit Onegunyah Rock Hole before majestic Durba Springs where we spend 2 nights in this restful shaded and well watered area.

Day 12 - Durba Springs is known as 'Jilikuru' by the local Martu people, who made this area their home. Elaborate Aboriginal rock art sites are here, and we walk through the Durba Hills area viewing these rock art galleries. Enjoy lunch back at camp and a relaxing easy afternoon as the drovers and cattle did in the good old days.

Day 13 – We leave this little haven and head for Well 16 with its challenging history then the lookout at Well 15 enables a wider view of this incredible landscape. Wells 14 and 13 are visited, then the restored Well 12 with good drinking water.   Then on to wells 11 & 10 and MacConkey Hill for our camp under a starry sky.

Day 14 – Today takes us to Weld Springs (Well 9) and the edge of Glen-Ayle Station, where WA’s first premier John Forrest built a fort in 1874 to defend against Aborigines. We travel off the CSR here to Glen-Ayle Station and then to Wiluna for refuelling, before overnight at the southern end of Canning Stock Route near Wiluna.

Days - 15- 20 - Broome to Alice Springs tour returns on Gunbarrel Highway & Great Central Road (surveyed by Len Beddell) via Carnegie Station, Everard Junction, Warburton (great Aboriginal art work), Giles Weather Station, Schwerin Mural Crescent, Docker River, overnight Yulara then Alice Spring completes approximately 5pm Day 20

The historic Muttaburra Hotel serves up both lunch and legends. Winton beckons with its crown jewel - the Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum. The day's crescendo comes at Lark Quarry Conservation Park, where you'll witness the world's only known dinosaur stampede site. Begin the day with a walk in Warrumbungle National Park, enjoying panoramic views of the Breadknife from near Camp Blackman or a bird-rich walk through Burbie Canyon. Visit Siding Springs Observatory, home to Australia’s largest optical telescope.

Travel west via silo art in Coonamble to the Macquarie Marshes, one of the most vital wetland ecosystems in the Southern Hemisphere. Explore local wildlife and learn about the Marshes' cultural and ecological importance. Continue to Bourke. Overnight Bourke. Meals: BLD

Day 3 — BOURKE, JANDRA CRUISE on DARLING RIVER, TIBOOBURRA  

Cruise the Darling River aboard the Jandra Paddleboat, echoing the legacy of paddle steamers in the region. Visit the Back O’Bourke Centre, showcasing stories of pioneers, poets and the powerful women of the west. Walk a local Aboriginal cultural trail, then explore Gundabooka National Park, with time to view sacred Aboriginal rock art and sandstone ranges. 

We then head due west for Tibooburra via Wanaaring crossing the recently flooded Paroo River, and via Nocoleche Nature Reserve to Overnight Tibooburra Meals: BLD

Day 4 — TIBOOBURRA TO CAMERON CORNER, MILPARINKA, BROKEN HILL

Today we are heading into the Sturt Desert & Sturt National park, crossing the Grey Range with a stop at Fort Grey.
The park protects an enormous arid landscape of space and solitude. The
rolling red sand dunes of the Strzelecki desert ripple through the
western section, graduating past surprising wetlands surrounded by white
sands. After some great opportunities for photos, we pass through the Dog Fence and arrive at Cameron Corner on
the 3 states corner (NSW, SA & QLD) for a thirst quencher and
souvenirs, and check out the "Corner Store"

Leave Cameron Corner and journey south again via Tibooburra, a town rich in gold rush history and the remote charm of the Sturt Desert. Discover the heritage sandstone buildings and desert sculptures. We visit the Milparinka cultural precinct and learn of Captain Sturts challenging expedition to disciover the "Inland Sea" Arrive in Broken Hill, the “Silver City”, and toast the journey with a view from the Line of Lode Miners Memorial. Day 5 — BROKEN HILL TO MUNGO NATIONAL PARK VIA MENINDEE LAKES & BURKE AND WILLS CAMPSITE

Depart Broken Hill and travel to Menindee Lakes, check out the prolific bird life and the Darling River Weir. with a stop at the historic  Burke & Wills Camp by the lakeshore. On through Menindee, down the Darling River Run to Mungo NP - View the lunnettes, historic woolshed and ancient history 

Day 6 — MUNGO TO LAKE CARGELLIGO VIA STOCK ROUTES 

We follow old stock routes through remote western NSW. Arrive at Lake Cargelligo, a tranquil oasis with much water birdlife . Overnight Lake Cargelligo. Meals: BLD

Day 7 — PARKES RADIO TELESCOPE, RETURN TO SYDNEY

Our final day takes us through Parkes for a stop at the iconic Parkes Radio Telescope – the “Dish” that played a vital role in the Apollo moon landing. Enjoy one last connection to the cosmos before the journey completes in Sydney. Also in Parkes is the Elvis Presley museum and annual celebration of "The Kings" birthday

4 Day Lake Eyre Tours Flights - itinerary

Day 1 - From Adelaide city or airport we depart via spectacular mountain scenery adjacent the Southern Flinders Ranges. Travel via the rich wine producing region of the Clare Valley (wine tasting optional) and through the rich countryside of rural South Australia. Enjoy picturesque scenery, and rural town stops with lunch and morning tea. We have a picnic lunch in scenic Melrose at the base of Mt Remarkable and cross the Goyder Line before Quorn and Hawker, the gateway to the Flinders Ranges. Enjoy Scenic views of the Elder, Druid & Heyson Ranges. We visit and walk amongst the River Red Gums and emus and kangaroos at the old Wilpena Homestead (sheep station) amongst the Cypress Pines.   Moving to our accommodation we check in for the night for a cosy dinner. Day 2 - Enjoy an optional scenic flight over Wilpena Pound and the Heyson and Flinders Ranges, before a 3 hours (or less) return walk with the kangaroos and spectacular River Red Gums into Wilpena Pound, viewing unique flora, Old Hills Homestead. with an optional hike up to Wangarra Hill lookout offering panoramic views of Wilpena Pound. Depart Wilpena Pound Resort and travel the fascinating Geological Trail through 800 million years of time via Brachina Gorge and Bunyeroo Gorge in the Flinders Ranges, viewing fossils including ancient stromatolites. Arrive at the old Ghan railway town of Parachilna and the famous Prairie Hotel, with tasty treats and exceptional Aboriginal art and jewellery for sale. We travel north here following the Heyson Range via Leigh Creek (viewing the massive open cut mine now closed) via Copley and Lindhurst past the Strzelecki Track and into the desert to Marree at the junction of the Oodnadatta and Birdsville Tracks.  Arrive Marree for overnight. Day 3 – From Marree we usually opt for an early morning flight, for best light and still air conditions. Alternatively flights may be from William Creek, depending on availability at time of booking and the duration of your flight chosen. If an extended flight is chosen, less time is available for ground viewing on the Oodnadatta Track or travel to William Creek.. While in Marree check out the ancient mosque and Old Ghan Railway history. Also the Lake Eyre Yacht Club and Birdsville Track. Day 1 – Depart Alice Springs at 8am and travel via Wycliffe Wells, Barrow Creek, the old Overland Telegraph stations, Mt Stirling and Ti-tree are significant landmarks before we arrive at the Devils Marbles for great photo opportunities at sunset. We travel on through the Goulburn River Valley and National Park, viewing unusual stone outcrops. Travel via Silo art at Dunedoo and street art at Mendoran to Coonabarabran. Here we view the mother with baby Diprotodon fossils extracted from Tambar Springs. Also the Crystal Kingdom Minerals and Fossils Museum from the Warrumbungle Range. We are close to the Warrumbungles which is Australia’s only Dark Sky Park, meaning it
is our only Internationally recognised area with an exceptional quality
of starry nights and low surrounding lights and an environment specifically protected for its
scientific, natural, educational, cultural heritage, and public

Day 2  - We take the scenic road to the beautiful Warrumbungle Range for a delightful bush walk with wonderful views of The Breadknife. We have a tour of Siding Springs Observatory, home to Australia’s largest optical telescope.Heading west we visit more silo art at Conamble before the Macquarie Marshes - a Ramsar site and meeting place for migratory and local wetland birds including egrets, spoonbills, Magpie Geese, A total of 77 waterbird species can be found in the Macquarie Marshes, including the threatened brolga, Australasian bittern and painted snipe.  Overnight Warren

Day 3 - Travel through scenic cattle and grain growing country to Gulargambone. Here view quirky street art depicting Galahs and bullock drays and local history, plus silo art with a message on the local water tank. Travelling down the Newell Highway to Gilgandra. Here we learn of the Coo-ee march and the men who answered the call of “Coo-ee! Come and join us!”, and fell into line in the towns and villages along the route of the  320 miles (515 km) march, that left Gilgandra with 25 men in 10 October 1915, and arrived in Sydney on 12th November 1915 with 263 recruits.

Next to Dubbo, the Hub of the West and tour of near 40000 people then on to Peak Hill Open Cut Gold Mine Experience (on the songline)  Gold was discovered at Peak Hill in 1889. Peak Hill was described as a high hill of felspathic rock containing large masses of iron, ferruginous quartz and quartzite. The mine ceased production and was closed 2002. A tour of the mine reveals eye-opening original gold working dating back to 1890s, several walking trails, easy and difficult with well-constructed viewing areas to the open-cut mining areas.

We travel further south to The Dish Exhibition centre at the giant CSIRO operated radio telescope that brought the 1st moon landing images to Earth. Learns of current astronomical research and a deeper appreciation of your place in the Universe. Overnight Parkes Dinner own expense at restaurant

Day 4  - In Parkes, visit The Henry Parkes Centre and museum..Henry Parkes was the father of the Australian Federation due to his efforts advocating for the federation of the six individual colonies of Australia (New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania, and Western Australia) culminating in Federation of Australia in 1901. Less famous here is the King's Castle, Australia's very own Elvis Presley museum created by the original yellow Wiggle Greg Page. Next, we visit Canowindra, the hot air ballooning capital of Australia and the Museum of Fishes – viewing ancient fish fossils from this area that was once an inland sea.

Then through scenic rural countryside to Cowra and the Japanese Gardens optional). In World War II there was a Japanese prisoner of war camp in Cowra, and a breakout. The gardens and Peace Pole commemorate this time. Also in Cowra is nearby Wyangala Dam (recently flooding)  and the Lachlan Valley Railway Roundhouse for the keen. Now heading for Sydney, and options for a stopover at a winery, the Three Sisters or Mt Tomah Botanical Gardens. Arrive approx 6 pm.

Day 2 – SHEAR OUTBACK, OUTBACK VILLAGES, WENTWORTH

Today we travel to Hay, one of Australia’s major wool growing areas, and a visit to the Shear Outback centre takes to you into the rich life in the wool industry in early NSW. We’ll take the backroad through saltbush plains, that are home to over 50 farming families. Tiny villages are the social hub for many of the large outback stations, where life can often be lonely. . Follow the Murray River to Trentham Estate, a family-owned winery on the banks of the Murray River. Enjoy an afternoon wine tasting by the river before we head to Wentworth. In the late 1800’s Wentworth was the largest river port in Australia with over 400 boats plying the Murray and the Darling Rivers, which meet here. Overnight Wentworth Meals: BLD

Day 3 – At Wentworth visit the junction of the Murray and Darling Rivers, Australia’s biggest river system and also visit Wentworth Pioneer Museum with life-size megafauna replicas from the local area including the cuddly 2-metre high Diprotodons. Into the desert and Mungo National Park to explore this ancient lakebed environment. Hear the stories of the regions from a local guide, and learn of the oldest known ritual burial of Mungo Man and Mungo woman.  Discover the Walls of China and megafauna history of the area, explore the ancient Willandra Lakes and the historic sheep station and large and impressive shearing shed that served the area for around 100 years. Itinerary Details

Day 1 – Adelaide to Coober Pedy – Depart 7:00 am via Port Wakefield, the giant wind farms of Snowtown and Spencers Gulf to Port Augusta with its historic precinct for morning tea on the old Port Augusta Dock. We head north up the Stuart Highway via Pimba and visit Woomera's historic rocket museum (passengers willing) then vast historic sheep stations including Glendambo. Arrive Coober Pedy late afternoon for dinner and a comfy sleep in underground accommodation amongst the opals (or above ground option available) LD

Day 2 – You can check out the opals and fascinating Umoona underground museum before we head off into the desert to The Painted Hills including Mount Arckaringa - these Ochre coloured hills are a unique feature of this area. We arrrive Oodnadatta and have a cuppa at the famous Pink Roadhouse before visiting the Old Ghan Railway Museum full of wonderfull history of the establishment and operation of Oodnadatta and the railway. Oodnadatta was established on the Neales River in 1889 it was South Australia’s most northern railway town. It was a starting point for pioneering travellers heading north and a major railhead for cattle being walked down the northern stock routes. By 1893, Oodnadatta boasted a diverse population which included Afghans, Chinese & Europeans. We travel north from Oodnadatta following sections of the old Ghan Track and visit Pedirka Siding Ruins and the Old Dalhousie Springs Homestead.

We enter Witjira National Park and arrive at Dalhousie Springs, a vast area of natural springs outpouring from the Great Artesian Basin – Dalhousie Springs is a series of 60 natural artesian springs from the Great Artesian Basin. Swim option at Dalhousie Springs in 38-43 Deg C water. Enter the Simpson Desert Regional Reserve – Overnight camp here on the edge of the Simpson Desert. BLD

Day 3 – Heading into the Simpson Desert Regional Reserve we cross the floodplains of Spring Creek Delta moving into numerous salt lakes and higher sand dunes. We take a break at Purnie Bore before more of the French Line with spectacular views from the top and great feeling of humility and nurturing by nature within the dunes. We travel over and longitudinally between the sandhills. Great photo opportunities, maybe a dingo or two to see, sunsets and sunrises and wildflowers. Enjoy and evening campfire at our remote desert camp BLD

Day 4-6 – We cross more salt lakes and sand dunes, but also travel parallel to the dunes for a different perspective of the landscape. We visit the Approdinna Attora Knolls, high gypsum hills with a great lookout over the desert. We see remnants of other travellers and oil searches in the desert. Take a break at Poeppels Corner marking the meeting of QLD, NT & SA borders. Overnight under the stars in our remote camp.

Day 7 – We cross Eyre Creek and traverse the largest sandhill, Big Red is also known as Nappanerica Dune, on the western edge of Lake Nappanerica, and the eastern edge of The Simpson Desert. Overnight ensuite accommodation in Birdsville. BLD

Day 8– This morning, time to check out Birdsville and unquie features of this once bussling town which was a customs post for cattle heading down the track. Consider an optional flight over Lake Eyre, Goyder Lagoon & Simpson Desert. (book early). We visit the historic Burke and Wills camp tree by the Diamantina River After lunch we head past the famous Birdsville Race Track and down the Birdsville Track to Mungerannie for overnight. BLD

Day 9 – This morning we cross the Cooper Creek, and flood plain, visit old station ruins including Lake Harry. Arriving in Marree, explore this once thriving railway town that helped save Darwin during WWII with 56 trains per week ! Marree is at the junction of the Birdsville and Oodnadatta Tracks, and the path of the Great Northern  Railway / Old Ghan for over 100 years, so lots of history here including Aboriginal museum and history, Tom Kruse (Outback Mailman from “Back of Beyond”) and Donald Campbells Bluebird story. Take an optional 1 or 2 hour scenic flight over Lake Eyre to see the Warburton Groove, the main inflow channel to Lake Eyre, Elliot Price Conservation Park, Halligan Bay, Lake Eyre South and the Marree Man (a 4 km long, giant engraving in the landscape). On return to base, we see some of the sights of Marree, this once thriving Ghan Railway town. Marree is caretaker for some interesting railway relics, plus  the old mail truck used by legendary outback mailman Tom Kruse on the run from Marree to Birdsville. We visit the shores of Lake Eyre and Lake Eyre National Park and connect with the wonder of the bird and plant life revitalised by recent flooding rains in a permanent waterhole. Overnight in Marree with a few yarns around the campfire or at the local pub. BLD

Day 10 – Today we visit the restored ruins of the old Ghan railway town of Farina, which once supported 300 people. We view the giant Leigh Creek coal mine (now closed), enjoy a break at the Quandong cafe at Copley and travel via old Ghan railway towns to Parachilna, and the Prairie Hotel in the foothills of the Flinders Ranges to Hawker and historic Quorn, home of the Pitchi Ritchi Railway, and via picturesque mountain landscapes via the Pitchi Ritchi Pass to arrive in Adelaide around 6pm. Day 1 – From Adelaide pickup (or Broken Hill option) approximately 8 am from airport or your accommodation for departure via spectacular mountain scenery as we travel via Clare Valley wine country, then the Flinders Ranges to Wilpena Pound. Day 2 – This morning we recommend the spectacular optional scenic flight over the pound. There’s time also to enjoy the Wangarra Lookout & Hills Homestead walk into the Pound. Day 3 – There’s plenty to do here in this remote,  rugged area, including scenic flights or relaxing walks in the paths by nearby creeks, but the highlight is the Ridge Top Tour.  The 4.5 hour Ridge Top Tour showcases the magic of the Northern Flinders Ranges timeless terrain and unique natural beauty of the Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary. Witness some of the most spectacularly rugged country on earth as you travel through Arkaroola’s 1600-million year geological history, as the inspiring images of red granite mountains and golden spinifex hillsides give way to a breath-taking view across the Freeling Heights, Lake Frome and the desert beyond. Day 4 – Today we pass by desert sand dunes, gibber plains and hot springs as we heading north to Innamincka. We pass by Lake Callabonna, where Diprotodon and numerous Australian megafauna roamed in swampy terrain when this was the eastern most shore of Australia. There are many remains of ancient beasties here, and the country makes it easy to imagine this other world of many millions of years ago. At Mt Hopeless (aptly named) we join the Strzelecki Track, we pass Merty Merty homestead and on via the vast oil and gas fields of Moomba and the Delta gas fields to enter the Innamincka Regional Reserve area, and famous Innamincka township on the banks of the notorious Cooper Creek.  An optional Cooper Creek cruise (if running) is in order (extra cost).  Dinner at the Innamincka pub.

Day 5 – Today we visit the Burke & Wills Dig Tree, were the ill fated explorers arrived only hours too late for their support party, and chose to avoid help from the local Aboriginal people. An historic and tragic event.  We do enjoy the prolific birdlife near here and unique flora before heading up the track, passing the largest shearing shed in Australia and the ruins of Cadelga Downs station, (alternatively via Haddon Corner, depending on road conditions) over the Queensland border to arrive Birdsville for overnight. Day 6 – Birdsville is an icon of the outback, attracting outback travellers to connect with the frontier history of this landmark town. Birdsville used to be the customs post for goods and cattle travelling to and from South Australia before Federation. It was the route used by the great cattle drovers, including S. Kidman & Co, and there’s plenty of this history to experience in Birdsville, especially at the local museum, adjacent the tasty treats of the Hard Road Cafe. Today we visit Big Red, the Simpson Desert’s biggest sand hill, and see Burke & Wills marked tree on the  Diamantina River. An optional flight over the Simpson Desert, Channel Country  and Goyder Lagoon is recommended and available here. Overnight Birdsville BLD 

Day 7 - We head off south on the Birdsville Track following the spectacular Diamantina River past Pandie Pandie station and Goyder Lagoon. Time and conditions willing, we visit Kalamurina Wildlife Sanctuary & Station, part of the Australian Wildlife Conservancy. Wartch out for wildlife including kowaris, dunnarts, kultarrs, hopping mice, skinks, and geckos and up above you might see quail thrush and wood swallows.

Today we cross the mighty Cooper Creek as we travel south on the Birdsville Track via some of the largest cattle stations in Australia and also visit Lake Harry. 

The Lake Harry Ruins are remnants of an experimental date palm plantation established in the late 19th century. The plantation was part of an effort to cultivate dates using the region's natural artesian water from the Great Artesian Basin. The project failed by the early 20th century due to harsh climatic conditions, soil salinity, and logistical challenges, plus no natural species to pollinate the date palms.

Arriving in Marree, explore this once thriving railway town that helped save Darwin during WWII with up to 56 trains per week! Marree is at the junction of the Birdsville and Oodnadatta Tracks, and the path of the Great Northern  Railway / Old Ghan for over 100 years, so lots of history here including Aboriginal museum and history, Tom Kruse (Outback Mailman from “Back of Beyond”) and Donald Campbells Bluebird story. We also see the fascinating Mound Springs bringing water up from the Great Artesian Basin. The old railway town of Coward Springs is visited with its popular hot bore bath and railway history and museum buildings. Overnight in William Creek with a few yarns around the campfire or at the local pub

Day 9 - From William Creek, take an optional 1 or 2 hour scenic flight over Lake Eyre to see the Warburton Groove, the main inflow channel to Lake Eyre, Elliot Price Conservation Park, Halligan Bay, Lake Eyre South and possibly the Marree Man (a 4 km long, giant engraving in the landscape). Day 10 - Today we are heading south on the Stuart Highway via desert travel & salt lakes that let you appreciate the remote and vast outback. Witness modern “oasis” outback stations and transport roadhouses of this great Stuart Highway connecting Australia’s north and south. Visit Woomera and the “rocket park” collection of missiles launched from this unique location, the extensive Rocket Range Museum and view the infamous Detention Centre. Travel via Port Augusta, the powerhouse of Spencers Gulf and a cuppa by the water front, then on via rich rural lands of the Gulf of St Vincent to arrive, Adelaide this evening. ITINERARY DETAILS – DARWIN to ADELAIDE (14Days)

 Day 1 – Darwin to Katherine, Mataranka & Dunmarra

Depart Darwin and travel south on the Stuart Highway via the lush Top End landscape to Katherine. Continue via Mataranka and the MatarankaThermal Springs / Elsey National Park, where you can enjoy the palm-lined,spring-fed pools that feature in We of the Never Never.

We then travel via the renowned Daly Waters Pub, with its quirky memorabilia and rich aviation and droving history,before continuing south toward Three Ways and the John Flynn Memorial,connecting with the story of the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

Cross the Ashburton and Whittington Ranges as we continue through classic outback scenery to overnight at Dunmarra,a famous outback rest stop on the Stuart Highway. L D

Day 2 – Dunmarra, Newcastle Waters, Renner Springs & Devils Marbles to Alice Springs

Depart Dunmarra and travel via Lake Woods and Newcastle Waters, once an important droving centre, and past Renner Springs, another iconic outback roadhouse.

We then pass through Three Ways, where the road from Mt Isa / Townsville joins the Stuart Highway, and see the John Flynn memorial (father of the RFDS). Continue south to Tennant Creek,once a major gold mining town, before reaching the spectacular Devils Marbles (Karlu Karlu) for great photo opportunities among these giantrounded boulders, known in Aboriginal legend as the “Eggs of the Rainbow Serpent”.

Continue via Wycliffe Wells, Barrow Creek, Ti-Tree and Aileron, where we visit the Aileron Outback Art Gallery and can see artists at work, before arriving in Alice Springs. Overnight in Alice Springs. BLD

Day 3 – Alice Springs to Gemtree, Harts Range, Atitjere & Tobermorey Station

After a tasty breakfast, we depart AliceSprings along the Plenty Highway, travelling east across the Central Australian desert.

Enjoy a stop at Gemtree, where you cancheck out gems, crystals and mineral specimens as well as local Aboriginal artand artefacts in this popular fossicking region. We pass by the rugged HartsRange and stop at the remote Atitjere community Aboriginal Arts centre,nestled at the base of the Harts Ranges and home to around 400 people.

We continue past giant termite mounds anddesert landscapes to cross into Queensland and arrive at Tobermorey Station.

The Tobermorey area, set on TobermoreyStation, is a lovely grassed area under trees. It has hotshowers, flushing toilets and a shop with some basic goods. We can enjoy anopen campfire under the stars tonight. Accommodation is available here in well appointed cabins with ensuite bathroom for early bookers.  BLD

Day 4 – Tobermorey Station to Boulia & MinMin Encounter

Today we travel from Tobermorey across the northern fringe of the Simpson Desert and into the heart of Channel Country, arriving at the remote township of Boulia.

The highlight here is the Min Min Encounter,a theatre presentation at the visitor centre, where we learn of the fascinating story of the Min Min lights phenomena – a mystery of strange red lights appearing and following people in this remote desert region.

After the Min Min Encounter and a Boulia town tour, we settle in for the night at Australia Hotel or Boulia Desert Sands Motel. BLD

Day 5 – Boulia, Bedourie & Channel Country to Birdsville

Depart Boulia and travel due south through thewide open spaces and braided channels of Channel Country. We cross several creeks and waterholes often hosting wetland birds including Brolgas and other waterbirds.

We pass through Bedourie, headquarters of the Diamantina Shire, with its classic outback character and long droving history.

Arrive in Birdsville for a town tour with its fascinating history – visit sites including Burke & Wills marked tree by the Diamantina River, and the site of one of Australia’s most famous thermal power stations. Overnight in Birdsville, with achance to soak up the atmosphere of the iconic Birdsville Pub. BLD

Day 6 – Birdsville & Big Red, WarburtonRiver & Kalamurina – to Mungerannie

This morning we head out through the sandhills to visit and climb Big Red, the Simpson Desert’s biggest sandhill, with panoramic views over the desert.

Returning to Birdsville, we then journey south along the Birdsville Track, visiting Cowarie Station on the Warburton River, the major inflow to Lake Eyre from the Diamantina River and Goyder Lagoon.

We visit Kalamurina Wildlife Sanctuary(operated by Australian Wildlife Conservancy) to learn of their important local and widespread conservation work across over 24 sanctuary properties in unique and diverse Australian landscapes.

Continuing south on the Birdsville Track, we reach Mungerannie Hotel, site of popular artesian bore-fed wetlands,a rich haven for birdlife and wildlife. Overnight Mungerannie Hotel – cabin accommodation with shared bathrooms. BLD

Day 7 – Mungerannie to Innamincka via WalkersCrossing & Moomba

Today we leave Mungerannie and travel via Walkers Crossing through the Stony Desert, crossing gibber plains and remote watercourses as we make our way towards the Strzelecki Track.

We pass the uncanny Moomba oil & gasfields, a major hub of Australia’s energy industry, and the location of the geothermal / hot rocks project of Geodynamics, where Australia has some of the hottest rocks on Earth, outside of volcanic areas.

**Geologists think that 10 million years ago,the granites in the Cooper Basin, South Australia, were exposed at the surface.Since that time they have been covered by a sedimentary layer, four kilometres thick, that acts as an overlying blanket, trapping the heat and preventing itfrom escaping to the atmosphere.

The heat is created by naturally occurring radiogenic decay that heats the granite to more than 250 degrees Celsius. The granite temperatures in Europe are only 180 degrees Celsius. The granite belt in the Cooper Basin is fractured in horizontal layers and these fractures naturally contain water at very high pressures – up to 5,000 pounds per square inch.**

Arrive at Innamincka, on the banks of Cooper Creek.

Check out the birdlife at sunset on the flood plains of Cooper Creek before a delicious meal at the Innamincka Hotel,adjacent the famous old Australian Inland Mission hospital restored as a museum and National Parks offices. Overnight Innamincka Hotel – 2 nights. BLD

Day 8 – Innamincka, Dig Tree, Burke’s Grave & Cooper Creek Cruise / Coongie Lakes

A chance for an early walk and look at creek side birdlife, the old hospital building (now museum & NP office) and quirky Innamincka – before we head for the SA/QLD border and Nappa Merrie Station (was owned by S Kidman & Co, now Gina Rinehart)to the Burke & Wills Dig Tree.

Here Burke & Wills’ support team led by Brahe had waited 4 months and 4 days (a month longer than agreed) and had buried provisions for the possibility of the returning northern explorers. The support team left only a few hours before Burke & Wills’ return, and the supplies were possibly not found, contributing to their demise. Lots of history– and birdlife – here on the infamous Cooper Creek.

There’s time for a cruise on Cooper Creek,and, providing the access route is open, we can visit Coongie Lakes, a superb haven for bird life in the region. Return to Innamincka Hotel. BLD

Day 9 – Innamincka, Strzelecki Desert &Moomba to Cameron Corner & Tibooburra

Today we depart Innamincka, rejoining the StrzeleckiTrack and travelling once more through the rolling red-sand dunes of the StrzeleckiDesert, past surprising wetlands surrounded by white sands, and acrossclassic desert and station country.

We pass again by the broader Moomba region and then travel via Merty Merty Station, the Yellow Bus site (now buried) and Bollards Lagoon, heading for Cameron Corner,where the borders of NSW, SA & QLD meet at the Dog Fence.

It is said by local Queensland residents that the flies come in from NSW, and the dust from South Australia. After a thirst quencher and time for photos and souvenirs at the “Corner Store”, we cross into NSW and continue into Sturt National Park and the Sturt Desert landscape.

We arrive at Tibooburra, with time to explore the Tibooburra pubs and considerable town and mining history,plus the Outdoor Pastoral Museum. Overnight at Family Hotel or Granites Motel, Tibooburra. BLD

Day 10 – Tibooburra, Depot Glen & Milparinka to Broken Hill

Depart Tibooburra travelling through the central Jump-Up country of Sturt National Park, with its flat-topped mesas and fantastic views.

We visit Depot Glen and the restored Milparinka Heritage Precinct, where explorer Charles Sturt spent six months in1845 with his men, waiting for rain or cooler conditions. This area has been extensively mined for tin, lead and gold and supported large sheep stations.

Flat-topped mesas and fantastic views characterise the central Jump-Up country. Remnant gidgee woodland, the catchment system of the ephemeral Twelve-Mile Creek and gibber and grass-covered plains dominate the east, while 450-million-year-old granite tors surrounding Tibooburra form part of the southern boundary of the park.

Appreciate this once thriving gold mining town, then travel via Packsaddle, cross the Barrier Range, and arrive in Broken Hill.

Arrive Broken Hill for overnight. Enjoy viewing Mario's famous artworks and a well deserved dinner at the famous Palace Hotel from Priscilla Queen of the Desert fame. In Broken Hill we can meet passengers from the Sydney train. 2 nights at Desert Sands Motel or similar, Broken Hill. BLD

Day 11 – Broken Hill, Silverton, Living Desert& Galleries

From Broken Hill, we visit Silverton,where films including Mad Max and Mission Impossible were made.We visit the Living Desert sculptures, Pro Hart’s Gallery, the Railway& Historical Museum and Miners Memorial, perched on top of theBroken Hill Line of Lode where the mine was located.

Alternatively, you may wish to take an Aboriginal-guided tour to Mutawintji (Mootwingee) National Park (extra cost), visitingoutstanding rock art sites and learning more of local Aboriginal culture.Overnight Broken Hill, Desert Sands Motel or similar. BLD

Day 12 – Broken Hill, Menindee Lakes &Darling River to Mungo National Park

Depart Broken Hill for Menindee, Menindee Lakes and Burke & Wills campsite on the banks of the Darling River.

We follow the Darling River to Pooncarie and then into Mungo National Park, a World Heritage-listed sitethanks to Mungo Man & Mungo Woman being discovered here after their60,000-year-old ritual burials.

Day 13 – Explore Mungo National Park, then via Mildura & Murray Riverland to Adelaide

Today we explore Mungo National Park in depth – visiting the eerie Walls of China lunette formations, learning more of the area’s Aboriginal and natural history at the National Parks display,and visiting the restored woolshed that tells the story of station life here.

We depart Mungo and travel via Mildura,then cross the Murray Riverlands through Pooncarie (if not already visited in reverse routing), Berri and Renmark, and through the Barossa Valley wine country, before arriving in Adelaide in the late afternoon / early evening. BLD

Day 14 – Tour Concludes in Adelaide

After breakfast, the tour completes in Adelaide by 10am. You are free to explore the many options in and around Adelaide – the Central Markets, Glenelg, nearby Barossa Valley or McLaren Vale wine regions – or connect with flights and onward travel. B
