Day 1 – Depart Cairns traveling via the scenic Atherton Tablelands to Undarra Lava Tubes, where we explore these fascinating formations created by ancient volcanic activity some 190,000 years ago. The lava tubes are part of the world’s longest lava flow from a single volcano in modern geological time.After a 2-hour tour and lunch, we head west through Georgetown, with its multi-award-winning Ted Elliott Mineral Collection, before arriving at George town for an overnight stay. Day 2 – Karumba & Gulflander RailwayToday we follow the Gulflander Railway line, traveling via the Gulf Development Road. We explore Croydon, once home to 7,000 people and122 pubs during the gold rush era. Continuing west, we reach Normanton,a town steeped in history with its Burns Philp store and the iconic Purple Pub. We then head to Karumba, located on the edge of the Gulf of Carpentaria, where we enjoy a spectacular sunset river cruise.Overnight in Karumba, where you can dine at a local restaurant famous for fresh seafood. Day 3 – Burke & Wills Last Camp and Gregory Downs We travel through historic frontier towns, stopping at Burke & Wills Last Camp 119, the site of the explorers' final camp before their ill-fated journey. We visit Burketown, a town established in 1865 to serve new pastoral holdings, then cross the Plains of Promise, a region visited by the H.M. Brig Beagle in 1841. Crossing the Leichardt River, named after the explorer Ludwig Leichardt, we continue to Gregory Downs for our overnight stay, where we base ourselves to explore Adel’s Grove and Lawn Hill National Park (Boodjamulla National Park). Day 4 – Adel’s Grove and Lawn Hill National Park - Today we visit Adel’s Grove, originally an experimental botanical garden established by Albert de Lestang (ADEL) in 1920, before exploring Lawn Hill National Park. Enjoy walks, canoeing, or a swim in the stunning lagoons andrivers with picturesque waterfalls. In the afternoon, we explore the Riversleigh Megafauna Fossil Fields, one of the richest fossil deposits in the world,revealing a fascinating prehistoric landscape. Return to Gregory Downs (or the "Helton" at Hells Gate Roadhouse for overnight. Hel;ls Gate is an iconic landmark where settlers once needed police escorts due to the fierce local Aboriginal tribes.  BLD

 

Day 5 – Hells Gate and Borroloola - We head west toward the Northern Territory, (on the dirt Highway 1) crossing many rivers in the Gulf region via the MacArthur River mine to Borroloola,known for its fascinating mix of Aboriginal cultures and frontier history, which we see on display in the old police station. Day 6 – Lost City and Lorella Springs Wilderness Park - Today, we enter Limmen National Park to explore the spectacular Southern Lost City, and walk amongst these giant columns of sandstone that look like an ancient city, formed when the region was once underwater. An optional helicopter flight over these impressive sandstone pillars may be available- please advise if interested.Then we enjoy a relaxing evening at the beautiful Lorella Springs Wilderness Park, with its many rock pools and thermal springs. Day 7 – Lorella Springs Wilderness Park - Spend the day at Lorella Springs, a one-million-acre outback cattle station surrounded by pristine wilderness. You can relax in the numerous thermal pools, explore the nearby Flying Fox Swamp, or visit the popular Nanny’s Pool. The area is a haven for birdlife, and there are many opportunities for adventure and exploration. Overnight at Lorella Springs. BLD

 

Day 8 – An early morning soak in the nearby hot springs could suit you, before departure for Roper Bar and Matarranka We depart Lorella Springs, to scenic Butterfly Falls named diue to the massive numbers of butterflys that breed here. Traveling north with stop at Roper Bar, an historic location on the Roper River and the border of Arnhem Land. Day 9 – Mataranka to Darwin On our final day, we enjoy Mataranka, famous for its hot springs and the setting of the novel "We of the Never Never." Day 1 – Depart Darwin 8 am via Stuart Highway to Pine Creek (gold and railway history –  and great coffee and cakes at the Railway Cafe) then Katherine, NTs 3rd largest town. On to Mataranka for the Elsey’s history of “We of the Never Never” fame and optional dip in the nearby hot springs. Overnight Mataranka  LD

Day 2 – We Depart the highway for Roper Bar and Ngukurr community and take a helicopter flight to visit the “Ruined City”, a vast sandstone rock formation, with guidance from traditional owners sharing the significance of this special place – also known as Baroonja. Enjoy a look around Roper Bar on the banks of the Roper River and the border of Arnhem Land. Connect with the local indigenous culture and people, and the more recent steamboat history (supplying the building of the Overland Telegraph Line in the 1860s & 70s) and popular fishing destination. It was also a major cattle droving route from the grasslands to Queensland and southern markets and includes some of the Durack’s massive cattle drive to the Kimberley. 

We head to the Limmen National Park for a walk and optional swim at scenic Butterfly Falls – and a morning cuppa.  Its then on to the “Southern Lost City” for a 4-6 km walk among these stunning giant columns of sandstone. Enjoy lunch here  before heading further south to overnight at Lorella Springs Wilderness Park  BLD

Day 3 – Lorella Springs is a huge 4,000-square kilometre (one-million acre) Outback Australia cattle station surrounded by the Limmen National Park, Aboriginal land, and many kilometres of pristine Northern Territory Gulf of Carpentaria coastline, rivers and waterways. It has numerous beautiful rock pools and thermal pools for swimming and we check out Flying Fox swamp and the latest popular spot, Nannys Pool. Enjoy a relaxing adventure day here with the birdlife before overnight. BLD

Day 4 – We continue south through the Limmen National Park to arrive at the township of Borroloola for supplies. At Borroloola we view the museum and history of this once wild frontier town, now a popular fishing destination. The population is around 800 (about 200 whites and 600 Aboriginal), with Aborigines living in camps around the town. Borroloola has some very different Aboriginal cultures ie the Yanyuwa and Mara are ‘saltwater people’ from the nearby islands while the Kurdanji and Karawa people are ‘mainland people’.The town is also the main support town for the McArthur River mine – one of the world’s largest zinc, lead and silver mines, situated about 70 kilometres southwest of Borroloola. We head toward the Gulf and visit King Ash Bay on the MacArthur River –  a top spot to experience the atmosphere of the Gulf and a shady lunch place by the river. Time permitting and passengers keen, we visit the Lost City near Cape Crawford, (optional heli flight) and the Caranbirini Nature Reserve for more sandstone pillars.The Lost City can be explored by helicopter from base at the Heartbreak Hotel at Cape Crawford, with an amazing 15 or optional 30 minute flight over these ancient sandstone pillars, formed when all this area was underwater. Day 5 – Today we head east over several river crossings, passing the Redbank (copper) Mine via Westmoreland (uranium deposits) and enter Queensland at Hells Gate, where police were stationed to provide escorts for settlers to the escarpments of Hell’s Gate, beyond which the Aboriginals were considered fierce. Hells Gate is the routes most western settlement in Queensland and now is a popular stopover with a grassy oasis and refreshments.

We travel through forest and river crossings to the large Aboriginal community of Doomadgee, then south to Gregory Downs, our base to explore Adel’s Grove which was originally gazetted in 1904 as a Miners Homestead Lease. In 1920 Albert de Lestang took up the property as an experimental Botanical Garden (hence the name “Adel” arose from Albert’s initials). Albert planted many species of trees and shrubs and supplied the Botanical Gardens of the world with the seeds produced by his nursery. This is adjacent Lawn Hill National Park (now Boodjamulla National Park) where we walk, canoe or swim in the beautiful lagoon and river with waterfalls.

Day 6 – Today we take a tour to visit the amazing Riversleigh Megafauna Fossil Fields and immerse in this unique landscape. Alternatively enjoy a relaxing day of walks and swims – your choice. Overnight Gregory Downs BLD

Day 7 – We travel to Burke & Wills last camp 119, an historic site with a fascinating history and stories to tell. Enjoy a break in the frontier town of Burketown, named after Burke of the Burke and Wills Expedition of 1860 who reached the gulf near here in February 1861. Burketown was established in 1865 to service new pastoral holdings established in the region.

We reach the Leichardt River, named after Ludwig Leichardt who walked this country in 1845. We check out the Leichardt Falls then travel across the “Plains of Promise” named when H M Brig Beagle (the famous ship which had carried Charles Darwin on his voyage) visited here in 1841. On to Normanton, and view the old Burns Philp store, and the 1870 railway history from the goldrush days, plus the Purple Pub. Arriving  Karumba on the edge of the Gulf of Carpentaria, we enjoy a sunset river cruise. Karumba was the base of the gulf Barramundi and prawning industry and home to many salt water crocodiles. Overnight Karumba BL – Dinner at own expense in local restaurant – great fresh fish and prawns here !

Day 8 – We follow the Gulflander Railway line via the Gulf Development Road through Croydon which in goldrush days had 7000 people and 122 pubs.Travel via  Georgetown and the multi award winning, Terrestrial – the Ted Elliott Mineral Collection, the largest minerals collection in the world. Day 9 – Undarra Lava Tubes tour. The Undara Lava Tubes were formed some 190,000 years ago when a major volcano erupted, its molten lava flowing down a dry river bed. As the top layer quickly cooled and crusted, the fiery magma below continued to flow through the tubes taking it further and further from the volcano. The Undara tubes are the world’s longest lava flow.

The word Undara means ‘a long way’ in the Aboriginal language. One of the lava flows from Undara extends over 160 kilometres (or 100 miles). This makes it one of the longest lava flows from a single volcano on our planet in modern geological time. The original tube formed by the flow extended for approximately 100kilometres, and several sections are accessible. After our 2 hour tour and tasty lunch, we travel via the Atherton Tablelands visiting the Millaa Millaa Falls on our route to Cairns for a celebration dinner together. Day 1 – Cape York Thursday Island Tours – Depart Cairns 730 am and travel through the rainforests and the Atherton Tablelands via picturesque Kuranda and Mareeba via the Palmer River area famous in the gold rush days, to the Laura Dance Festival site (time at festival available if dates match – biannual event). You can choose to spend the day here, or travel the short distance to the Quinkan Rock Art Reserve, and an afternoon tour of this amazing rock art site. Day 2 – Depart up the Peninsular Development Road for the Old Telegraph Track (OTT) heading for Cape York. We travel via the Hann River Roadhouse, and check out the Musgrave Telegraph Station. Musgrave was first built as an overland telegraph station in 1887, along with Palmerville, Fairview, Coen, Mein, Moreton, McDonnell and Paterson. It was named after Sir Anthony Musgrave (1828 – 1888) who was Governor of Queensland from 1883 to 1888. These stations were  repeater stations, with great banks of batteries and a generator to boost the power in the telegraph line.  Beyond the township of Coen we pass the old Quarantine Station, and begin to pass a number of exciting creek crossings. We pass through the Mungkan Kandju National Park, a large wilderness park that stretches from the McIlwraith Range foothills, between the Archer and Coen rivers, and consists of open eucalypt woodlands, melaleuca swamps and various rainforest types. The Wik Mungkan, Kaanju and Ayapathu Aboriginal peoples, the Traditional Owners of the park, welcome you to their land and ask that you respect their culture and country during your visit. We take a break at the Archer River Roadhouse, and cross the Piccaninny Plains and Savannah country to arrive in Weipa for a tour of the massive bauxite mine operated by Rio Tinto. Weipa is the largest town on Cape York Peninsula, and has approx 3000 people supporting the mining and export of bauxite and cattle. Nearby is Duyfken Point, where Dutch explorer Willem Janszoon recorded the Australian coast in 1606, 164 years prior to James Cook. BLD Overnight Weipa

Day 3 – Depart Weipa to the OTT, crossing the Wenlock River.  After a stop at the Moreton Telegraph Station, we turn off the OTT to the Bamaga Rd and enter the Jardine National Park and the Heathlands. Be entranced by the unusual change in the landscape. The Heathlands is a vast area of 2 metre high wet anddry heath vegetation which live side by side and is home to an abundanceof wildlife. Enjoy a break at Eliot Falls before we cross the notorious Jardine River. We pass through the administrative centre for the region, Bamaga to Siesia, the “Gateway to the Torres Strait”. Today we also travel on to the farthest northern point of Australia to stand on Australia’s northern most tip at Cape York , view the numerous islands of the Torres Strait, and the meeting place of the Arafura and Coral Seas. Day 4 – At 8 am depart by fast cat ferry for the 1 hour 10 min ride to Thursday Island, passing Friday and seeing Wednesday Islands enroute. Thursday Island is known as Waiben, meaning ‘no water or place of no water’. In 1877, TI  was an administrative centre for the Torres Strait Islands established by the Queensland Government. In the early days over 1000 Japanese pearl divers were operating here. In 1880, Thursday Island acted as a defence post for Australia and old canons remain on the Island. On TI, a 1 hour island tour is included, highlighting local history and landmarks, then free time to enjoy the Torres Strait Islander cultural centre, and pearl, souvenir or window shopping. After lunch, (own cost) the return ferry departs at 2:30 from Engineers Wharf, arriving approximately 3:40. Enjoy free time this afternoon till dinner. Optionally, from Thursday Island your can join the Horn Island tour which visits WWII sites including a WWII museum. This tour also meets the last & only return ferry, and does not give time to look around Thursday Island. Day 5 – Heading south we visit the WWII aircraft wrecks of Bamaga, and skirt the Jardine River National Park, take the Jardine River crossing then a rest stop at Fruit Bat Falls.  We visit the beach at Captain Billy’s Landing located on the east coast, and arrive Moreton Telegraph Station for a few yarns, a great meal and overnight. Day 6 – Today we explore Lakefield National Park. The park is home to threatened species including the red goshawk, Lakeland Downs mouse and spectacled hare-wallaby. Hann and Kalpowar crossings are two of the many significant Aboriginal cultural sites found in the area. Barramundi abound here if you are feeling adventurous, and many waterbirds inhabit Low Lake. Enjoy this rich nature and great waterholes for swimming. Arrive Cooktown late afternoon for overnight. BLD

Day 7 – Cooktown to Cairns via the Bloomfield Track & Daintree Rainforests. The Daintree Rainforest encompasses an area of approximately 1,200 square kilometres, from the Daintree River north to Cooktown and west to the Great Divide, representing the single largest block of tropical rainforest in Australia. The area protected under World Heritage listing covers an area of approximately 12,000 square kilometres, stretching from Townsville to Cooktown 75 per cent of which is tropical rainforest, an area equivalent to about the size of Sydney. We explore and discover the magic of rainforests on our Daintree Rainforest Discovery centre walk.

Cooktown was first established for the goldfields on the Palmer River in 1872, although its also famous for when Captain Cook repaired his ship, The Endeavour, after hitting coral on the Great Barrier Reef. We check out some key local landmarks, including the Vera Scarth-Johnson Gallery, whose artwork consists of illustrations of the flowering plants from the region, the Grassy Hill Lighthouse which is home to the Cooktown lighthouse, built in England and shipped to Cooktown in 1885, the sun dial which is actually a ‘Global Positioning Monument’ and Captain Cook’s Grassy Hill Monument. Also, the James Cook Museum, including canon and the anchor from from Cooks ship, the HM Barque Endeavour and Chinese, Pastoral, Mining, and Indigenous artefacts.

We depart Cooktown via the coastal road (4WD only) and witness Black Mountain National Park, home to mysterious Aboriginal legends. We visit the heritage-listed Lions Den Hotel built in 1875, then spectacular Bloomfield Falls at the Bloomfield River crossing.  This track was the site of many protests and the Daintree Blockade in 1983. The Bloomfield track takes us to Cape Tribulation and on to the ferry to cross the Daintree River. Time permitting, we travel through Mossman and visit Mossman Gorge, and a side trip via Port Douglas. Overnight Cairns. BLD

Cameron Corner Country Tour Details ...

Day 1 - Depart Broken Hill (or Adelaide day prior) through the Barrier Ranges on the Silver City Highway via Packsaddle for Milparinka and the Albert Hotel. Appreciate this once thriving gold mining town at the restored Milparinka Heritage Precinct. We check out the Tibooburra pub and considerable town before heading into the Sturt Desert & crossing the Grey Range with a stop at Fort Grey. The park protects an enormous arid landscape of space and solitude. The rolling red-sand dunes of the Strzelecki desert ripple through the western section, graduating past surprising wetlands surrounded by white sands. After some great opportunities for photos, and to explore we arrive at Cameron Corner on the 3 states corner (NSW, SA & QLD) for a welcome meal and overnight at the "Corner Store" and hotel.

Day 2 - Travel via Bollards Lagoon, the Yellow Bus and Merty Merty station, crossing the sand hills of the Strzelecki Desert, and Creek as we head for the Strzelecki Track and the uncanny Moomba oil & gas fields. We pass the geothermal power plant / hot rocks project of Geodynamics where Australia has the hottest rocks on Earth, outside of volcanic areas.

Geologists think that 10 million years ago, the granites in the Cooper Basin, South Australia, were exposed at the surface. Since that time they have been covered by a sedimentary layer, four kilometres thick, that acts as an overlying blanket; trapping the heat and preventing it from escaping to the atmosphere.

The heat is created by naturally occurring radiogenic decay that heats the granite to more than 250 degrees Celsius. The granite temperatures in Europe are only 180 degrees Celsius. The granite belt in the Cooper Basin is fractured in horizontal layers and these fractures naturally contain water at very high pressures – up to 5, 000 pounds per square inch. Check out the birdlife at sunset on the flooding Cooper Creek before a delicious meal at the Innamincka Hotel, adjacent the Australian Inland Mission hospital, restored as National Parks offices.

Day 3 - A chance for an early walks and look at creek side birdlife - and quirky Innamincka - before we head for the S/ QLD border and Nappa Merrie Station (once owned by S. Kidman & Co) to the Burke & Wills Dig Tree. Here Burke & Wills support team waited 4 months and 5 days and provisions were buried for the northern explorers. The support left in the morning of the same day before Burke & Wills returned, but they were too weak to follow. Lots of history, and birdlife here on the infamous Cooper Creek. Heading south we travel through picturesque desert then sand hill country via Orientos, Santos and Sullivans Tank before crossing the border into NSW at the Warri Gate on the Dingo fence, and once again into the Sturt Desert. Taking in vast stony plains, the towering red-sand hills of the great Strzelecki Desert and the unusual flat-topped mesas around the Olive Downs, this park covers 340,000 hectares of classic outback terrain. Thanks to the protection of the dingo-proof fence, there are large populations of western grey and red kangaroos. We arrive Tibooburra for dinner & overnight at the local hotel in this most remote NSW desert town.

Day 4 - Time to explore Tibooburra, and the Outdoor Pastoral Museum.  Flat-topped mesas and fantastic views characterise the central Jump-Up country. Remnant gidgee woodland, the catchment system of the ephemeral Twelve-Mile Creek and gibber and grass-covered plains dominate the east, while 450 million year old granite tors surrounding Tibooburra form part of the southern boundary of the park. We leave town and  head for Pooles Grave & Depot Glen where in 1845 Charles Sturts men were stranded and lay camp. Travelling south via salt lakes and vast plains we arrive Broken Hill late afternoon wth manay a tale to share.

Day 1 - Departs Broome 730 am via the Savannah Way. Travel the mighty Savannah grasslands, and cross the Fitzroy River twice. Marvel at the giant boabs, and lunch at Fitzroy Crossing. Visit Halls Creek with gold mining history to overnight at Bungles Bungles Safari camp for our next day in the Bungle Bungles LD

Day 2 - All aboard our day tour into the Bungle Bungles to Cathedral Gorge and learn of the Bungle Bungles heritage and hear some of local nature’s hidden secrets. Be amazed on your walk into Cathedral Gorge, where you will be surrounded by the Beehive Domes for which the park is so famous. Arrival into the gorge displays a magnificent amphitheatre designed by nature at its best. Relax in this shaded area and enjoy a memorable picnic lunch before returning on your walk to rejoin the 4WD. Travel to the Bungle Bungle Bush Camp for afternoon tea then join your aircraft to complete your afternoon scenic flight over the ancient Ragged Ranges and the Argyle Diamond Mine. Arriving back in Kununurra approx. 500 pm. Day includes easy to moderate 3 km walk into Cathedral Gorge via the Beehive Domes. Overnight Kununurra or El Questro Station option if booked.

Day 3 -  Check out the fabulous art galleries displaying local works before we depart for the Gibb River Road and El Questro Station, a million acres of spectacular Kimberley scenery, rivers and gorges. Its here that the movie Australia was filmed, nestled under the Cockburn Ranges. This morning enjoy a walk and optional swim in one of El Questro's many fabulous gorges. After lunch by the riverside, enjoy a cruise in the Chamberlain River Gorge and viewing from Pigeon Lookout over the Pentecost River. Overnight at El Questro. Late afternoon relax by the river at our El Questro Station homestead riverside camp. BL Dinner own at expense at station restaurant.

Day 4 – This morning relax in the Zebedee hot springs before we journey the scenic and spectacular Gibb River Road via the Cockburn Range,  and many boab trees to cross  the mighty Pentecost River and view from a high vantage point. We visit Home Valley Station and stop to view some special Aboriginal rock art including Wandjina and Bradshaw (Gion Gion) rock art.  The days journey takes us through varying terrain including high mountains and "jump ups", and some great river crossings as we travel from East to West Kimberley. Enjoy a break at a bird lovers billabong. We take a right turn at the Kalumburu Rd, and can enjoy a cool drink at the bar of the famous working cattle station, Drysdale River cattle Station where we overnight. There's always news to catch up with here, and some tall tales from travellers and locals at this remote Kimberley cattle station.

Day 5 - From Drysdale River Station, we take a 2 hour scenic flight viewing Mt Hann, Deep Gorge and the Rift, then over the magnificent Prince Regent Nature Reserve. We follow the Prince Regent River, fly over numerous unnamed waterfalls, King Cascades, St George Basin, Mt Trafalgar, Prince Frederick Harbour, the Hunter River, Donkins Hill Falls and the spectacular Mitchell Falls. The vast beautiful unspoilt coastline of the wilderness nature reserve is always a heart winner. You may even see crocodiles, dugong and whales. This is a flight over the most remote wilderness area in the world. This is the best way to see this country from the air, the rugged landscape with untouched coastline and tumbling waterfalls will stay in your memory forever. On return we travel south on the Gibb River Rd crossing the Gibb, Hann and Manning Rivers, to Mt Barnett Roadhouse. After lunch enjoy a swim of relax at the easy to access and picturesque Galvans Gorge with more Wandjina rock art, great scenery and good swimming and photos too!  We travel through spectacular Kimberley woodlands and river crossings and arrive at Bell Gorge / Imitji Safari Camp for overnight. Day 6 - Magical Bell Gorge is calling this morning for a walk and swim opportunity in these fresh flowing waters. Enjoy this idyllic setting before our tour climbs the King Leopold Ranges and we travel through the picturesque Inglis Gap and King Leopold Conservation Park. This is spectacular mountain country with impressive views over the ranges and vast woodlands and plains. We cross the Lennard River and pass through the ancient Devonian era Napier Range at Queen Victoria Pass. Enjoy morning tea before a walk in Windjana Gorge and the National Park with the abundant wildlife and numerous freshwater crocodiles in this eerie, ancient seabed environment - where the mega fauna roamed. We then follow the Devonian Reef / Napier Range road to Tunnel Creek National Park with its many boab trees and picturesque complex shapes to Tunnel Creek. Here we don our torches and shorts to wade through this incredible underground river system full of stalagmites and stalactites and even an under ground spring. This is where the Aboriginal freedom fighter Jandamarra and the Bunuba Resistance was centred in the 1890s, depicted in 2 novels and a recent stage production. After our walk in the shady and refreshing underground river system, we follow the ranges and cross through them again, to arrive Fitzroy Crossing for overnight. BLD

Day 7– After breakfast enjoy a relaxing Geike Gorge Fitzroy River cruise and marvel at the high cliffs, annual flood records, stunning wildlife and river tales from our knowledgeable local guide. Enjoy a visit to the local Aboriginal art centre then comfortable highway cruising toward Derby, to visit the famous Prison Boab tree, and then Derby highlights including the Derby wharf (30 ft tides!) on King Sound, the world’s longest cattle drinking trough, the new Mowanjum Aboriginal Art Centre (meet the artists, learn and buy from source) at Mowanjum Aboriginal Community. Time permitting we visit the Derby wetlands for last looks at Jabiru & Brolgas. Depart Derby for Broome to arrive late afternoon to enjoy sunset at Cable Beach over the Indian Ocean, and possibly an optional camel ride. Depart Wilpena Pound Resort and travel the fascinating Geological Trail through 800 million years of time via Brachina Gorge and Bunyeroo Gorge in the Flinders Ranges, viewing fossils including ancient stromatolites. Arrive at the old Ghan railway town of Parachilna and the famous Prairie Hotel, with tasty treats and exceptional Aboriginal art and jewellery for sale. We travel north here following the Heyson Range via Leigh Creek (viewing the massive open cut mine now closed) via Copley and Lindhurst past the Strzelecki Track and into the desert. Today we are heading south on the Stuart Highway via desert travel & salt lakes that let you appreciate the remote and vast outback. Witness modern “oasis” outback stations and roadhouses of this great Stuart Highway connecting Australia’s north and south. Time permitting visit Woomera and the “rocket park” collection of missiles launched from this unique location, the extensive Rocket Range Museum .Womera is the location of the infamous Detention Centre. Travel via Port Augusta, see the new solar powerhouse at SunDrop Farms in Spencers Gulf and then on via rich rural lands of the Gulf of St Vincent to arrive, Adelaide this evening approximately 7pm. The CSR includes 51 wells and stretches 2,013 kilometres from Halls Creek to Wiluna in Western Australia. Day 1 – Alice Springs depart 7 am for Tanami Track with stops at Tillmouth Well and Yuendumu. Visit the World renowned Warlu Aboriginal Art centre here. Remote desert travel via Renner Springs, and Tanami Gold Mine to camp that evening under the stars near Rabbit Flat. BLD

Day 2 - After breakfast, we depart to see more remote old mines, and cross the WA border. We arrive Halls Creek Hotel for overnight.  B, L, D

Day 3 – Leaving Halls Creek we take the Tanami Track road south toward Alice Springs and Wolf Creek Crater. We travel via Ruby Plains, and vast cattle station still owned and operated by S. Kidman & Co the pioneering pastoralist who ruled the cattle country of the late 18 & 1900s.  We travel by and see Wolfe Creek Crater, the world 2nd largest meteorite crater, before arrival at the Aboriginal community and owned cattle station of Billilluna, the start of the Canning Stock Route. From here we pass by waterholes of Lake Gregory (bird watchers paradise) by the Paraku Indigenous Protected Area and check out the birds and wildlife.
   

Paruku is the Walmajarri name for Lake Gregory. Paruku/Lake Gregory is the only lake in the region with a reliable source of fresh water for large numbers of birds and other animals, supporting over 70 species of waterbirds and 175 aquatic species. Surrounded by hundreds of kilometres of arid desert lands, these wetland oases are fed from a catchment in the south-east Kimberley region. More than 100,000 birds visit the wetlands regularly, with up to 60,000 estimated at Mulan Lake at any one time.

Paruku IPA encompasses a variety of desert and semi-desert landscapes undulating red sand plains, salt pans and occasional dunes with stunted eucalyptus. It is dotted with acacias and spinifex, flood plains with swathes of short grasses and low shrubs, and alluvial plains and sand rises.
We visit Bloodwood Bore and Wells 51 and 50, before stopping for our overnight camp at the restored Well 49, the Crystal Well.

Day 4 – On the track again we explore Breaden Pool and Godfrey's tank – named in 1896 after members of David Carnegie’s expedition. We stop at Wells 48 and 47 then it’s into the sand dunes with their unique vegetation and wildlife to arrive at Well 46 for overnight.

Day 5 - We are now in the Great Sandy Desert and check out Wells 45 & 44, and take a break at Gravity Lakes. From Well 43 we head over the Guli Lake System and past Well 42 to stop for overnight amongst the trees near Helena Springs track.

Day 6  - Enjoy the remote early morning nature of this area before arrival at Well 41, known by the locals as 'Tiru'. This was a popular resting spot for the drovers due to good feed here for their cattle. We head south to cross Lake Tobin then to Well 39, where lots of water here attracts abundant bird life including budgerigars. Wardabunni Rockhole & Well 38 is reached today, where we enjoy another night under the stars.

Day 7 - After another great breakfast we arrive at Well 37, where lay the graves of 3 early drovers who died under mysterious circumstances. We learn more of the mystery and their fate at the site, and numerous other stories of early pioneers before Well 36. Travelling on we visit Well 33 then overnight in comfortable and modern style rooms at the Kunawarritji Aboriginal Community. Here we have abundant water and a chance to catch up on personal laundry.

Day 8 – At Kunawarritji Aboriginal Community and store we can do personal shopping and restock some essential supplies & fuel. These remote communities are always fascinating insights into remote desert life. Onwards we visit Wells 32, 31 and 30 (known as Duna Jinnda). After lunch we travel to Thring Rock, a sandstone outcrop with a lookout we climb for a great view of the landscape, before our overnight camp nearby.

Day 9 - More sand dunes today before Well 27, then the rebuilt Well 26 with good drinking water. We take a break here and stock up with water, then travel to shady Well 25 for lunch under the Desert Oaks before arrival at Well 24 for overnight camp. 

Day 10 – We are now also on part of the Talawana Track, which is a direct route to Newman. We see the Capricorn Roadhouse Fuel dump where many Canning trekkers still arrange fuel drops from Newman. Travel on to Georgia Bore, which was sunk in the 1970’s by CRA survey crews. Lake Disappointment is a large salt lake and our goal today. Named by explorer Frank Hann after he was expecting to find a freshwater lake. Overnight and sunset by the lake shore at Lake Disappointment.

Day 11 – We travel several kilometres by the shores of Lake Disappointment to Savory Creek crossing (or diversion crossing depending on water levels) and Well 19. After lunch we visit Onegunyah Rock Hole before majestic Durba Springs where we spend 2 nights in this restful shaded and well watered area.

Day 12 - Durba Springs is known as 'Jilikuru' by the local Martu people, who made this area their home. Elaborate Aboriginal rock art sites are here, and we walk through the Durba Hills area viewing these rock art galleries. Enjoy lunch back at camp and a relaxing easy afternoon as the drovers and cattle did in the good old days.

Day 13 – We leave this little haven and head for Well 16 with its challenging history then the lookout at Well 15 enables a wider view of this incredible landscape. Wells 14 and 13 are visited, then the restored Well 12 with good drinking water.   Then on to wells 11 & 10 and MacConkey Hill for our camp under a starry sky.

Day 14 – Today takes us to Weld Springs (Well 9) and the edge of Glen-Ayle Station, where WA’s first premier John Forrest built a fort in 1874 to defend against Aborigines. We travel off the CSR here to Glen-Ayle Station and then to Wiluna for refuelling, before overnight camp at the southern end of Canning Stock Route.

Day 15 - From our last camp here we travel to the BHP mining town of Newman and check into our welcome hotel after lunch. You can explore Newman or just catch up with all those photos at your leisure. Group dinner this evening in Newman.

Days - 15-19 - Alice Springs tour returns on Gunbarrel Highway & Great Central Road (surveyed by Len Beddell) via Carnegie Station, Everard Junction, Warburton (great Aboriginal art work), Giles Weather Station, Schwerin Mural Crescent, Docker River, Uluru, overnight Alice Spring overnight completes 5pm Day 19

If returning to Newman / Broome

• Day 16 – Today you have time for an optional morning tour of the monster BHP Mt Whaleback mine. Our CSR Tour ends at 10 am after breakfast and for those flying we will transfer you to Newman airport for your flight to Perth.
• Alternatively if travelling back to Broome with us we depart after the mine tour and lunch. We travel through spectacular mineral rich Pilbara country, via Roy Hill, the new Gina Reinhart Iron Ore mine, visit the famous and impressive rock formation that is the Marble Bar then overnight in accommodation in Marble Bar township.
• Optional Day 17 – Visit the old Comet Mine before we travel mineral rich mining and Mesa areas of Shay Gap, before we cross the mighty De Grey River. Enjoy lunch at spectacular 80 Mile Beach, then a stop at Sandfire to arrive Broome late afternoon. BL

Day 2 – This morning we recommend the spectacular optional scenic flight over the pound. There’s time also to enjoy the Wangarra Lookout & Hills Homestead walk into the Pound. We leave Wilpena and pass by traditional sheep stations and plains stretching to Lake Frome, and through into the Gammon Ranges National Park to Arkaroola. Overnight Arkaroola Resort. B,L,D

Day 3 – There’s plenty to do here in this remote,  rugged area, including scenic flights or relaxing walks in the paths by nearby creeks, but the highlight is the Ridge Top Tour.  The 4.5 hour Ridge Top Tour showcases the magic of the Northern Flinders Ranges timeless terrain and unique natural beauty of the Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary. Witness some of the most spectacularly rugged country on earth as you travel through Arkaroola’s 1600-million year geological history, as the inspiring images of red granite mountains and golden spinifex hillsides give way to a breath-taking view across the Freeling Heights, Lake Frome and the desert beyond. After a spectacular day, relax by the fireside and share your experiences. Overnight Arkaroola BLD

Day 4 – Today we pass by desert sand dunes, gibber plains and hot springs as we heading north to Innamincka. We pass by Lake Callabonna, where Diprotodon and numerous Australian megafauna roamed in swampy terrain when this was the eastern most shore of Australia. There are many remains of ancient beasties here, and the country makes it easy to imagine this other world of many millions of years ago. At Mt Hopeless (aptly named) we join the Strzelecki Track, we pass Merty Merty homestead and on via the vast oil and gas fields of Moomba and the Delta gas fields to enter the Innamincka Regional Reserve area, and famous Innamincka township on the banks of the notorious Cooper Creek.  An optional Cooper Creek cruise (if running and time permits) is in order before dinner at the Innamincka pub.

Day 5 – Today we visit the Burke & Wills dig tree, were the ill fated explorers arrived too late for their support party, and did not respond to the message on the tree to dig, where supplies were buried that could have saved their lives. We do though enjoy the prolific birdlife near here and unique flora before heading up the track, passing the largest shearing shed in Australia and the ruins of Cadelga Downs station, (alternatively via Haddon Corner, depending on road conditions) over the Queensland border to arrive Birdsville for overnight. BLD

Day 6 – Birdsville is an icon of the outback, attracting outback travellers to connect with the frontier history of this landmark town. Birdsville used to be the customs post for goods and cattle travelling to and from South Australia before Federation. It was the route used by the great cattle drovers, including S. Kidman & Co, and there’s plenty of this history to experience in Birdsville, especially at the local museum, adjacent the tasty treats of the Hard Road Cafe. Today we visit Big Red, the Simpson Desert’s biggest sand hill, and see Burke & Wills marked tree on the  Diamantina River. An optional flight over the Simpson Desert and Goyder Lagoon is available here. We head off south on the Birdsville Track following the spectacular Diamantina River past Pandie Pandie station and Goyder Lagoon. Time and track conditions willing, we visit Kalamurina Wildlife Sanctuary & Station, part of the Australian Wildlife Conservancy for overnight, or alternatively overnight at Mungeranie Roadhouse on the Birdsville Track. Day 7 – Arriving in Marree, explore this once thriving railway town that helped save Darwin during WWII with 56 trains per week! Marree is at the junction of the Birdsville and Oodnadatta Tracks, and the path of the Great Northern  Railway / Old Ghan for over 100 years, so lots of history here including Aboriginal museum and history, Tom Kruse (Outback Mailman from “Back of Beyond”) and Donald Campbells Bluebird story. Take an optional 1 or 2 hour scenic flight over Lake Eyre to see the Warburton Groove, the main inflow channel to Lake Eyre, Elliot Price Conservation Park, Halligan Bay, Lake Eyre South and the Marree Man (a 4 km long, giant engraving in the landscape). On return to base, we see some of the sights of Marree, this once thriving Ghan Railway town. Marree is caretaker for some interesting railway relics, plus the old mail truck used by legendary outback mailman Tom Kruse on the run from Marree to Birdsville. We visit the shores of Lake Eyre south and connect with the wonder of the bird and plant life which becomes revitalised after flooding rains. We also see the fascinating Mound Springs bringing water up from the Great Artesian Basin. Overnight in Marree with a few yarns around the campfire or at the local pub. BLD

Day 8 – Today we visit the restored ruins of the old Ghan railway town of Farina, which once supported 300 people. We view the giant Leigh Creek coal mine, enjoy a break at the Quandong cafe at Copley and travel via old Ghan railway towns to Parachilna, and in the foothills of the Flinders Ranges to Hawker and picturesque mountain landscapes to arrive in Adelaide around 6pm, delivered to your accommodation or airport connection. Itinerary Details

Day 1 – Adelaide to Coober Pedy – Depart 7:00 am via Port Wakefield, the giant windfarms of Snowtown and Spencers Gulf to Port Augusta with its historic precinct for morning tea on the old Port Augusta Dock. We head north up the Stuart Highway via Pimba and visit Woomera's historic rocket museum (passengers willing) then vast historic sheep stations including Glendambo. Arrive Coober Pedy late afternoon for dinner and a comfy sleep in underground accommodation amongst the opals (or above ground option available) LD

Day 2 – You can check out the opals and fascinating Umoona underground museum before we head off into the desert to The Painted Hills including Mount Arckaringa - these Ochre coloured hills are a unique feature of this area. We arrive at Oodnadatta and have a cuppa at the famous Pink Roadhouse before visiting the Old Ghan Railway Museum full of wonderfull history of the establishment and operation of Oodnadatta and the railway. Oodnadatta was established on the Neales River in 1889 it was South Australia’s most northern railway town. It was a starting point for pioneering travellers heading north and a major railhead for cattle being walked down the northern stock routes. By 1893, Oodnadatta boasted a diverse population which included Afghans, Chinese & Europeans. We travel north from Oodnadatta following sections of the old Ghan Track and visit Pedirka Siding Ruins and the Old Dalhousie Springs Homestead.

We enter Witjira National Park and arrive at Dalhousie Springs, a vast area of natural springs outpouring from the Great Artesian Basin – Dalhousie Springs is a series of 60 natural artesian springs from the Great Artesian Basin. Swim option at Dalhousie Springs in 38-43 Deg C water. Enter the Simpson Desert Regional Reserve – Overnight camp here on the edge of the Simpson Desert. BLD

Day 3 – Heading into the Simpson Desert Regional Reserve we cross the floodplains of Spring Creek Delta moving into numerous salt lakes and higher sand dunes. We take a break at Purnie Bore before more of the French Line with spectacular views from the top and great feeling of humility and nurturing by nature within the dunes. We travel over and longitudinally between the sandhills. Great photo opportunities, maybe a dingo or two to see, sunsets and sunrises and wildflowers. Enjoy and evening campfire at our remote desert camp BLD

Day 4-5 – We cross more salt lakes and sand dunes, but also travel parallel to the dunes for a different perspective of the landscape. We visit the Approdinna Attora Knolls, high gypsum hills with a great lookout over the desert. We see remnants of other travellers and oil searches in the desert. Take a break at Poeppel's Corner marking the meeting of QLD, NT & SA borders. Overnight under the stars in our remote camp.

Day 6 – We cross Eyre Creek and traverse the largest sandhill, Big Red is also known as Nappanerica Dune, on the western edge of Lake Nappanerica, and the eastern edge of The Simpson Desert. Overnight ensuite accommodation in Birdsville. BLD

Day 7 – This morning, time to check out Birdsville and the unique features of this once bustling town which was a customs post for cattle heading down the track. Consider an optional flight over Lake Eyre, Goyder Lagoon & Simpson Desert. (book early). We visit the historic Burke and Wills camp tree by the Diamantina River.  After lunch we do a Birdsville tour with its fascinating history, visit Burke & Wills marked tree by the Diamantina River, and site of Australias most famous thermal power station. After lunch, we depart and travel due north through Channel Country and the Diamantina Shire HQ at Bedourie, crossing several creeks and water holes often hosting wetland birds including Brolgas. Arrive Boulia for overnight at Australia Hotel or Boulia Desert Sands Motel. BLD

Day 8 – The Min Min Encounter is a theatre presentions at the visitors centre, where we learn of the fascinating story of the Min Min lights phenomena –  a mystery of strange red lights appearing and following people in this remote desert region. We depart after the exhibition and town tour for Tobermory via the Plenty Highway and the northern boundary of the Simpson Desert. The Tobermory camping area which is set on the Tobermorey Station is a lovely grassed area under trees. It has hot showers, flushing toilets and a shop with some basic goods. We can enjoy an open campfire under the stars tonight. Accommodation is available here in basic cabins with shared bathrooms for early bookers. Alternatively camping option. as we overnight at Tobermorey Station  BLD

Day 9 – Our journey onward takes us via Jervois, which is our last fuel stop. Jervois is a cattle station, formed in 1960, and one of the last stations to be taken up in the area. We pass by giant termite nests and nearby the rugged Harts Range. Enjoy a stop at the remote Atitjere community Aboriginal Arts centre, nestled at the base of the Harts Ranges, Atitjere is home to around 400 people. Time permitting, a stopover at Gemtree and check out the gems, crystals and mineral specimens as well as local Aboriginal Art and artefacts at this popular gem fossicking region. Arrive in Alice Springs for overnight and a celebratory meal together. BLD

Silo Art Trail Tours - 5 day Details

Silo Art Trail tours take us through some lovely country town and regional areas, and our 5 day tour from Sydney to Adelaide includes the Portland silos at the old Cement Factory – beautiful artwork there on the cement works and symbolic of the restoration of the community in Portland exemplified by their site work and the wonderful annual art exhibition.

Moving on beyond Bathurst and the fascinating history of the gold rush and Cobb & Co coaches, we visit Canowindra and the Museum of Fishes – ancient fish fossils from this area that was once an inland sea. Onwards to the popular Grenfell Wheat silos completed in 2019 and then moving to the well-known Weetalle Silos. We travel via Narrandera on the Murrumbidgee River, in the Riverina region of New South Wales then to Wagga Wagga.

From Wagga Wagga we cross the NSW / VIC border to two other silos at Tungamah and St. James Silos then the Rochester Painted Silo before an overnight stop at historic Echuca on the Murray River. Here we enjoy a lovely riverboat cruise on the Murray River and some time to soak up the fascinating history of this still bustling riverboat town.

Following the Murray, we arrive at Lake Bogan and visit the Historic site of the Catalina Seaplanes which was the major land-based maintenance depot during the Second World War where seaplanes were serviced from all over Australia but also the active aircraft up in the Pacific regions. a full size Catalina is on display and lots of WWII aircraft memorabilia.

From here we move into the Victorian Silo Art Trail and visit some of the famous sites including the Nullawil Silo Art, the Patchwollock site and there’s quite a concentration in this western Victoria region. Moving into South Australia we visit Coonalpyn silo mural and then finally we see the Karoonda silos and then to Adelaide

Day 1 – Cape York Thursday Island Tours – Depart Cairns 730 am and travel through the rainforests and the Atherton Tablelands via picturesque Kuranda and Mareeba via the Palmer River area famous in the gold rush days, to the Laura Dance Festival site (time at festival available if dates match – biannual event). You can choose to spend the day here, or travel the short distance to the Quinkan Rock Art Reserve, and an afternoon tour of this amazing rock art site. Rock Art Walks – Explore some of the Quinkan Aboriginal Rock Art at the Split Rock art site or the Quinkan rock art at Jowalbinna in Queensland’s premier rock art site The area includes –

Day 2 – Depart up the Peninsular Development Road for the Old Telegraph Track (OTT) heading for Cape York. We travel via the Hann River Roadhouse, and check out the Musgrave Telegraph Station. Musgrave was first built as an overland telegraph station in 1887, along with Palmerville, Fairview, Coen, Mein, Moreton, McDonnell andPaterson. It was named after Sir Anthony Musgrave (1828 – 1888) who was Governor of Queensland from 1883 to 1888. These stations were  repeater stations, with great banks of batteries and a generator to boost the power in the telegraph line.  Beyond the township of Coen we pass the old Quarantine Station, and begin to pass a number of exciting creek crossings. We pass through the Mungkan Kandju National Park, a large wilderness park that stretches from the McIlwraith Range foothills, between the Archer and Coen rivers, and consists of open eucalypt woodlands, melaleuca swamps and various rainforest types. The Wik Mungkan, Kaanju and Ayapathu Aboriginal peoples, the Traditional Owners of the park, welcome you to their land and ask that you respect their culture and country during

your visit. We take a break at the Archer River Roadhouse, and cross the Piccaninny Plains and Savannah country to arrive in Weipa for a tour of the massive bauxite mine operated by Rio Tinto. Weipa is the largest town on Cape York Peninsula, and has approx 3000 people supporting the mining and export of bauxite and cattle. Nearby is Duyfken Point, where Dutch explorer Willem Janszoon recorded the Australian coast in 1606, 164 years prior to James Cook. BLD Overnight Weipa

Day 3 – Depart Weipa to the OTT, crossing the Wenlock River.  After a stop at the Moreton Telegraph Station, we turn off the OTT to the Bamaga Rd and enter the Jardine National Park and the Heathlands. Be entranced by the unusual change in the landscape. The Heathlands is a vast area of 2 metre high wet anddry heath vegetation which live side by side and is home to an abundanceof wildlife. Enjoy a break at Eliot Falls before we cross the notorious Jardine River. We pass through the administrative centre for the region, Bamaga to Siesia, the “Gateway to the Torres Strait”. Today we also travel on to the farthest northern point of Australia to stand on Australia’s northern most tip at Cape York , view the numerous islands of the Torres Strait, and the meeting place of the Arafura and Coral Seas. Day 4 – At 8 am depart by fast cat ferry for the 1 hour 10 min ride to Thursday Island, passing Friday and seeing Wednesday Islands enroute. Thursday Island is known as Waiben, meaning ‘no water or place of no water’. In 1877, TI 
was an administrative centre for the Torres Strait Islands established by the Queensland Government. In the early days over 1000 Japanese pearl divers were operating here. In 1880, Thursday Island acted as a defence post for Australia and old canons remain on the Island. On TI, a 1 hour island tour is included, highlighting local history and landmarks, then
free time to enjoy the Torres Strait Islander cultural centre, and pearl, souvenir or window shopping. After lunch, (own cost) the return ferry departs at 2:30 from Engineers Wharf, arriving approximately 3:40. Enjoy free time this afternoon till dinner. Optionally, from Thursday Island your can join the Horn Island tour which visits WWII sites including a WWII museum. This tour also meets the last & only return ferry, and does not give time to look around Thursday Island. Day 5 – Heading south we visit the WWII aircraft wrecks of Bamaga, and skirt the Jardine River National Park, take the Jardine River crossing then a rest stop at Fruit Bat Falls.  We visit the beach at Captain Billy’s Landing located on the east coast, and arrive Moreton Telegraph Station for a few yarns, a great meal and overnight. Day 6 – Today we explore Lakefield National Park. The park is home to threatened species including the red goshawk, Lakeland Downs mouse and spectacled hare-wallaby. Hann and Kalpowar crossings are two of the many significant Aboriginal cultural sites found in the area. Barramundi abound here if you are feeling adventurous, and many waterbirds inhabit Low Lake. Enjoy this rich nature and great waterholes for swimming. Arrive Cooktown late afternoon for overnight. BLD

Day 7 – Cooktown to Cairns via the Bloomfield Track & Daintree Rainforests. The Daintree Rainforest encompasses an area of approximately 1,200 square kilometres, from the Daintree River north to Cooktown and west to
the Great Divide, representing the single largest block of tropical rainforest in Australia. The area protected under World Heritage listing covers an area of approximately 12,000 square kilometres, stretching from Townsville to Cooktown 75 per cent of which is tropical rainforest, an area equivalent to about the size of Sydney. We explore and discover the magic of rainforests on our Daintree Rainforest Discovery centre walk.

Cooktown was first established for the goldfields on the Palmer River in 1872, although its also famous for when Captain Cook repaired his ship, The Endeavour, after hitting coral on the Great Barrier Reef. We check out some key local landmarks, including the Vera Scarth-Johnson Gallery, whose artwork consists of illustrations of the flowering plants from the region, the Grassy Hill Lighthouse which is home to the Cooktown lighthouse, built in England and shipped to Cooktown in 1885, the sun dial which is actually a ‘Global Positioning Monument’ and Captain Cook’s Grassy Hill Monument. Also, the James Cook Museum, including canon and the anchor from from Cooks ship, the HM Barque Endeavour and Chinese, Pastoral, Mining, and Indigenous artefacts.

We depart Cooktown via the coastal road (4WD only) and witness Black Mountain National Park, home to mysterious Aboriginal legends. We visit the heritage-listed Lions Den Hotel built in 1875, then spectacular Bloomfield Falls at the Bloomfield River crossing.  This track was the site of many protests and the Daintree Blockade in 1983. The Bloomfield track takes us to Cape Tribulation and on to the ferry to cross the Daintree River. Time permitting, we travel through Mossman and visit Mossman Gorge, and a side trip via Port Douglas. Overnight Cairns. BLD

Day 2 - Explore Mungo National Park, a World Heritage listed site thanks to Mungo Man man & woman being discovered here, after their 60,000 year old ritual burial. Explore the walls of China, and more history including National Parks display, and the restored woolshed. Next we meet the Darling River at Pooncarie and follow the river to Menindee, Menindee Lakes, and Burke and Wills campsite on the banks of the river. Arrive Broken Hill for overnight.  Enjoy viewing Mario's famous artworks and a well deserved dinner at the famous Palace Hotel from Priscilla Queen of the Desert fame. Day 3 - From Broken Hill, we visit Silverton, where films including Mad Max, and Mission Impossible were made. We visit the Living Desert sculptures, Pro Harts Gallery, the Railway & Historical Museum and Miners Memorial on top of the Broken Hill Line of Lode where the mine was located. Day 4 - Depart Broken Hill through the Barrier Range on the Silver City Highway via Packsaddle for Milparinka and Depot Glen, where explorer Charles Sturt spent 6 months in 1845 with a team of men, waiting for rain or cooler conditions. This area has been extensively mined for tin, lead and gold and operated large sheep stations. Appreciate this once thriving gold mining town at the restored Milparinka Heritage Precinct. Time to explore Tibooburra, and the Outdoor Pastoral Museum.  Flat-topped mesas and fantastic views characterise the central Jump-Up country. Remnant gidgee woodland, the catchment system of the ephemeral Twelve-Mile Creek and gibber and grass-covered plains dominate the east, while 450 million year old granite tors surrounding Tibooburra form part of the southern boundary of the park. We check out the Tibooburra pubs and considerable town and mining history before overnight here at Family Hotel or Granites Motel BLD

Day 5 - Today we are heading into the Sturt Desert & Sturt National park, crossing the Grey Range with a stop at Fort Grey. The park protects an enormous arid landscape of space and solitude. The rolling red-sand dunes of the Strzelecki desert ripple through the western section, graduating past surprising wetlands surrounded by white sands. After some great opportunities for photos, we pass through the Dog Fence and arrive at Cameron Corner on the 3 states corner (NSW, SA & QLD) for a thirst quencher and souvenirs, and check out the "Corner Store". It is said by the local Queensland residents that the flies come in from NSW, and the dust from South Australia. We travel via Bollards Lagoon, the Yellow Bus site (now buried) and Merty Merty station, crossing the sand hills of the Strzelecki Desert, and Creek as we head for the Strzelecki Track and the uncanny Moomba oil & gas fields. We pass the location of the geothermal power plant / hot rocks project of Geodynamics where Australia has the hottest rocks on Earth, outside of volcanic areas.

Geologists think that 10 million years ago, the granites in the Cooper Basin, South Australia, were exposed at the surface. Since that time they have been covered by a sedimentary layer, four kilometres thick, that acts as an overlying blanket; trapping the heat and preventing it from escaping to the atmosphere.

The heat is created by naturally occurring radiogenic decay that heats the granite to more than 250 degrees Celsius. The granite temperatures in Europe are only 180 degrees Celsius. The granite belt in the Cooper Basin is fractured in horizontal layers and these fractures naturally contain water at very high pressures – up to 5, 000 pounds per square inch. Check out the birdlife at sunset on the flooding Cooper Creek before a delicious meal at the Innamincka Hotel, adjacent the famous old Mission station, restored as National Parks offices. Day 6 - A chance for an early walk and look at creekside birdlife - the old hospital building (now museum & NP office) and quirky Innamincka - before we head for the S/ QLD border and Nappa Merrie Station (was owned by S Kidman & Co, now Gina Reinhart) to the Burke & Wills Dig Tree. Here Burke & Wills support team lead by Brahe had waited 4 months and 4 days (a month longer than agreed) and had buried provisions for the possibility of the returning northern explorers. The support team left only a few hours before Burke & Wills return, and the supplies were possibly not found, contributing to their demise. Lots of history, and birdlife here on the infamous Cooper Creek. There's time for a cruise on Cooper Creek, and providing the access route is open, we can visit Coongie Lakes, a haven for bird life in the region. Overnight Innaminka Hotel 2 nights.

Day 7 - Travel via Moomba and remote Walkers Crossing through the Stony Desert to the Birdsville Track and Mungerannie Hotel, site of their popular Artesian bore fed wetlands. Overnight Mungerannie Hotel - cabin accommodation with shared bathrooms BLD

Day 8 - Today we visit Cowarie Station on the Warburton River, the major inlow to lake Eyre from the Diamantina River and Goyder Lagoon before a visit to  Kalamurina Wildlife Sanctuary operated by Australian Wildlife Conservancy.  Here we larn of the important local and wiedespread work of AWC with its over 24 sanctuary properties in unique and diverse Australian landscapes. We later travel north on the Birdsville Track to cross the Queensland border and overnight in Birdsville, at the Birdsville Pub BLD

Day 9 - Today we will travel through the sandhills to visit and climb Big Red, the Simpson Desert’s biggest sand hill. We do a Birdsville tour with its fascinating history, visit Burke & Wills marked tree by the Diamantina River, and site of Australias most famous thermal power station. After lunch we depart and travel due north through Channel Country and the Diamantina Shire HQ at Bedourie, crossing several creeks and water holes often hosting wetland birds including Brolgas. Arrive Boulia for overnight at Australia Hotel or Boulia Desert Sands Motel. BLD

Day 10 - The Min Min Encounter is a theatre presentions at the visitors centre, where we learn of the fascinating story of the Min Min lights phenomena -  a mystery of strange red lights appearing and following people in this remote desert region. We depart after the exhibition and town tour for Tobermorey via the Plenty Highway and the northern boundary of the Simpson Desert. The Tobermorey camping area which is set on the Tobermorey Station is a lovely grassed area under trees. It has hot showers, flushing toilets and a shop with some basic goods. We can enjoy an open campfire under the stars tonight. Accommodation is available here in basic cabins with shared bathroom for early bookers. Day 11 - Our journey onward takes us via Jervois, which is our last fuel stop. Jervois is a cattle station, formed in 1960, and one of the last stations to be taken up in the area. We pass by giant termite nests and nearby the rugged Harts Range. Enjoy a stop at the remote Atitjere community Aboriginal Arts centre, nestled at the base of the Harts Ranges, Atitjere is home to around 400 people. Time permitting, a stopover at Gemtree and check out the gems, crystals and mineral specimens as well as local Aboriginal Art and artefacts at this popular gem fossicking region. Arrive Alice Springs for overnight and a celebratory meal together. BLD

Day 1 - Departs Broome via the Savannah Way through expansive Savannah woodlands and grasslands, we cross the Fitzroy River at Willare and stop here for a morning cuppa. We travel on Windjana Gorge in the 300 million year old Devonian Reef known as the Napier Range, and and take a walk in this erie ancient landscape where the dinosaurs roamed. Here we usually see scores of crocodiles basking in the sun.This is where the Aboriginal freedom fighter Jandamarra and the Bunuba Resistance was centred in the 1890s, depicted in 2 novels and a stage production. After a walk in the gorge by the Lennard River enjoy lunch in this special environment in the National Park. We then travel the short distance along the Devonian Reef and majestic boab trees to Tunnel Creek here we don our waterproof shoes and headlight torches to take a walk through the underground river system with amazing stalagtites and stalagmites..We travel then to our comfy night at the the Fitzroy River Lodge at Fitzroy Crossing.  LD

Day 2 - This morning and early start to catch the best of the wildlife on a  a relaxing Geike Gorge Fitzroy River cruise. Marvel at the high cliffs, annual flood records, stunning wildlife and river tales from our knowledgeable local guide. If open visit the local Aboriginal Art Centre for unique art works by local artists. Travelling east, we stop for the view and photos at Ngumban Cliffs a picturesque lookout between the Devonian Reef and ancient Kimberely sandstones and mesas. We stop at Marys Pool for lunch which is a haven for birds and crocs before Halls Creek with gold mining history and Aboriginal art centre. Day 5 – This morning  we take a walk up Emma Gorge, or alternative Amalia Gorge, with beautiful waterfalls and great swimming holes before we journey the scenic and spectacular Gibb River Road via the Cockburn Range. We pass by many boab trees to cross the largest river crossing in the Kimberley, the mighty Pentecost River. We take  a break from a high vantage point to view this amazing scene. passing via Home Valley Station the days journey takes us through varying terrain including high mountains and "jump ups", and some great river crossings, including the Durack River. as we travel from East to West Kimberley. Enjoy a break and birdspotting by the Durack. We take a left turn at the Kalumburu Road intersection and cross the Hann River, then a look in at Gibb River Station and a chat with the locals at the local Aboriginal community store, with local Aboriginal artwork. Overnight here or depending on availability at Mt Elizabeth Station. BLD

Day 6 - Nearby Manning Gorge waterhole is a beautiful site surrounded by large paperbark trees and is the largest accessible waterhole on the Gibb River Road. Spend some quality time here, and visit nearby Aboriginal Rock Art before we visit Mount Barnet Roadhouse, at the middle of the Gibb River Road, and a local hub and Aboriginal community centre. We can restock here, and update supplies before we head down the road to an easy 800 m walk to pictureque Galvans Gorge with Wandjina rock art, and an optional swim in the waterhole under the waterfall. Travel on through spectacular Kimberley geology, woodlands and river crossings and arrive at Imitji Community on Mt House Station, with its Aboriginal Art centre and local artists work for sale. We visit spectacular Dalmanyi (Bell Gorge) this afternoon for a hearty walk, an optional swim and great photos, then head to our overnight accommodation at Imitji Bell Gorge safaris camp or Mt Hart.  (depending on availability at time of booking)  BLD

Day 7 – Our tour climbs the Wunaamin Miliwundi Ranges (formerly between 1879 and 2020, the King Leopold Ranges and we travel through the picturesque Inglis Gap and King Leopold Conservation Park. Today more amazing scenery as we cross the Lennard River and pass through the ancient Devonian era Napier Range at Queen Victoria Pass viewing "Queen Victoria Head". Travel via comfortable highway cruising toward Derby, to visit the famous Prison Boab tree, and Derby highlights including the Derby wharf (30 ft tides!) on King Sound, the world’s longest cattle drinking trough, the new Mowanjum Aboriginal Art Centre (meet the artists, learn and buy from source) at Mowanjum Aboriginal Community. Day 1 - Departs Broome via the Savannah Way through expansive Savannah woodlands and grasslands, we cross the Fitzroy River at Willare and stop here for a morning cuppa. We travel on Windjana Gorge in the 300 million year old Devonian Reef known as the Napier Range, and and take a walk in this erie ancient landscape where the dinosaurs roamed. Here we usually see scores of crocodiles basking in the sun.This is where the Aboriginal freedom fighter Jandamarra and the Bunuba Resistance was centred in the 1890s, depicted in 2 novels and a stage production. After a walk in the gorge by the Lennard River enjoy lunch in this special environment in the National Park. We then travel the short distance along the Devonian Reef and majestic boab trees to Tunnel Creek here we don our waterproof shoes and headlight torches to take a walk through the underground river system with amazing stalagtites and stalagmites..We travel then to our comfy night at the the Fitzroy River Lodge at Fitzroy Crossing.  LD

Day 2 - This morning and early start to catch the best of the wildlife on a  a relaxing Geike Gorge Fitzroy River cruise. Marvel at the high cliffs, annual flood records, stunning wildlife and river tales from our knowledgeable local guide. If open visit the local Aboriginal Art Centre for unique art works by local artists. Travelling east, we stop for the view and photos at Ngumban Cliffs a picturesque lookout between the Devonian Reef and ancient Kimberley sandstones and mesas. We stop at Marys Pool for lunch which is a haven for birds and crocs before Halls Creek with gold mining history and Aboriginal art centre. Day 1 – Pick up from your Sydney accommodation at 730 am and enjoy the fresh early light and air of the spectacular Blue Mountains. Visit Katoomba, Leura, Echo Point, Three Sisters, Jamieson Valley (Grand Canyon) and Cliff Drive over Megalong Valley before a morning tea at Govett’s Leap near Blackheath, overlooking the Grosse Valley and spectacular Blue Gum Forest in the Blue Mountains. Option for descent into the Jamieson Valley via scenic railway and return by cable car – a great ride !

Beyond Govetts Leap we descent the 1500 metres of the Great Dividing Range to Lithgow and from Pearson’s Lookout view the Blue Mountains region and Wollomi National Park in this World Heritage area. Enjoy a tasty lunch at a Winery in Mudgee and wine tasting. Often we see wild kangaroos as we travel these areas. Day 2 – Depart for the awesome drive through the Goulburn River National Park and spectacular mountain passes to the village of Sandy Hollow (great arts and coffee stop) in the Hunter Valley. Travel through small rural town on the Golden Highway, via some of Australia’s most prestigious thoroughbred horse studs, and cattle country. We see the vast coal mines of the Hunter Valley before our stop at some local wineries for wine tasting a full range of wines from various vineyards, and a delicious lunch. If willing, we can also visit the Hunter Valley Chocolate Company, a Cheese factory for cheese tasting and a fudge factory … mmm. Wildlife are waiting for us at a nearby wildlife park (closed Wednesdays). The Eyre Bird Observatory was established as Australia's first bird observatory by Birds Australia (formerly the RAOU) in 1977.The observatory is a lovely old stone building nestled between leafy woodlands and striking white dunes within walking distance of the beach. It was built in 1897 to serve as a telegraph station on the Intercolonial Telegraph Line (South Australia to Western Australia). It is located near the site where explorer Edward John Eyre found water during his overland journey from Adelaide to Albany in 1841. The station was deserted in 1930 and remained so until its restoration in 1977.The building incorporates a fine natural history library and a small museum, which provides some history of the Eyre Telegraph Station and the telegraph line. It also contains information and displays on the coastal environments, including past activities such as whaling. Ruins of other telegraph stations built on the Intercolonial Telegraph Line are located to the east at Eucla (near Eucla National Park) and to the west at Israelite Bay, which lies within Nuytsland Nature Reserve.

Itinerary - may run in reverse order

Day 1 – Depart Sydney for the Blue Mountains with morning tea at stunning views from Govetts Leap over the Grose Valley. Moving on via Lithgow to Bathurst and the fascinating history of the gold rush and Cobb & Co coaches. We travel via Orange to near Parkes to visit The Dish Exhibition Centre at the giant CSIRO operated radiotelescope that brought the 1st moon landing images to Earth. Back in Parkes, and less famous is the King's Castle, Australia's very own Elvis Presley museum created by the original yellow Wiggle Greg Page.

Heading west we travel beside the Indian Pacific railway route and visit Manildra, Bogan Gate and Condobolin, in extensive Murray Darling Basin wheat, grain, sheep and cattle producing areas with a taste of the far west of NSW. Arrive for overnight at Lake Cargelligo.

Day 2 - We depart for Hillston, once an important stop for the stagecoaches of Cobb and Co. then on via Ivanhoe on the Cobb Highway, part of the Kidman Way. Arriving in Menindee we visit Kinchega National Park, to view the birdlife of Menindee Lakes then to nearby Burke and Wills camp on the banks of the Darling River. It's now a short hop to Broken Hill for dinner at the famous & delicious Mario’s Palace Hotel (full of the original murals from Priscilla Queen of the Desert fame) Overnight Broken Hill.

Day 3 – Explore Broken Hill highlights (your choice) options include Pro Hart Gallery, The Line of Lode Lookout, a mine tour, and Miners Memorial plus Desert Sculptures or Lake Mungo or Mutawintji National Parks (optional extra day tour) for exceptional rock art rich in Aboriginal history. Overnight Broken Hill.

Day 4  -  Depart Broken Hill through the Barrier Range on the Silver City Highway via Packsaddle for Milparinka Appreciate this once thriving gold mining town at the restored Milparinka Heritage Precinct withh impressive new displays of early life and Sturts expedition. This area has been extensively mined for tin, lead and gold and operated large sheep stations. 

We can also visit Poole's Grave and Depot Glen, where explorer Charles Sturt spent 6 months in 1845 with a team of men, waiting for rain and cooler conditions. T. Time to explore Tibooburra, and the Outdoor Pastoral Museum. Flat-topped mesas and fantastic views characterise the central Jump-Up country while 450 million-year-old granite tors surrounding Tibooburra form part of the southern boundary of the Sturt National Park. We check out the impressive National Parks display and explore the nearby Granites walking track at the Dead Horse campground, and considerable town and mining history before overnight here at the Family Hotel or Granites Motel BLD

Day 5 - Heading into the Sturt Desert we cross the Grey Range with a stop and walk to the lake at Fort Grey. The park protects an enormous arid landscape of space and solitude. The rolling red-sand dunes of the Strzelecki desert ripple through the western section, graduating past surprising wetlands surrounded by white sands. After some great opportunities for photos, and to explore the work of the Wild Deserts project reintroducing locally extinct mammals to Sturt National Park in the far corner of outback NSW.

We cross through the dingo fence (Earths largest man made structure) to arrive at Cameron Corner on the 3 states corner (NSW, SA & QLD). After some refreshments at the "Corner Store" we travel via Bollards Lagoon, the Yellow Bus and Merty Merty station, crossing the sand hills of the Strzelecki Desert, and Strzelecki Creek as we head up the Strzelecki Track through the uncanny Moomba oil & gas fields. We pass the location of the now decommissioned geothermal power plant / hot rocks project of Geodynamics where Australia has the hottest rocks on Earth, outside of volcanic areas.

Geologists think that 10 million years ago, the granites in the Cooper Basin, South Australia, were exposed at the surface. Since that time they have been covered by a sedimentary layer, four kilometres thick, that acts as an overlying blanket; trapping the heat and preventing it from escaping to the atmosphere.

The heat is created by naturally occurring radiogenic decay that heats the granite to more than 250 degrees Celsius. The granite temperatures in Europe are only 180 degrees Celsius. The granite belt in the Cooper Basin is fractured in horizontal layers and these fractures naturally contain water at very high pressures – up to 5, 000 pounds per square inch.

Day 6 - A chance for an early walk and look at creek side birdlife - and quirky Innamincka - before we visit Burke's Grave site.   We then drive approximately 70km further upstream crossing the SA/ QLD border and Nappa Merrie Station (once owned by S Kidman & Co) to the Burke & Wills Dig Tree.

Here Burke & Wills support team waited 4 months before departing, even though intsructed by Burke to wait 3 months. Provisions were buried for the northern explorers before the support group left only hours before Burke & Wills return, who were so weak they chose not to pursue. Lots of history, and birdlife here on the infamous Cooper Creek.

After a reflective look around here, we head for Eromanga and the Eromanga Natural History Museum where nearby Australia’s largest dinosaur was carefully excavated from the dirt and a raft of other dinosaurs followed, all species that had never been seen before. The discoveries made southwest Queensland the country’s newest palaeontology frontier. We take a museum tour and meet the discovered remains of dinosaurs "Cooper" and "Zac" and many other species. Day 7 -  Today our destination is Bourke, back in NSW via Thargomindah, Lake Bindegolly National Park which conserves one of the most important wetland systems in south-west Queensland and is often home to prolific birdlife. Then on via Yowah and Eulo with unique Boulder opals. Cunnamulla is next where we learn of the Cunnamulla Fella (a song of a drover written by Slim Dusty) We cross the border to NSW and follow the Warrego River south for our overnight and dinner in Bourke.

Day 8 - In Bourke we take a cruise along the Darling River on the Jandra, a rebuilt historic paddleboat to recall the river boat history. In recent years Bourke has undergone a remarkable revitalisation and is now a shining light in the remote west of NSW. The impressive ‘Back O’Bourke’ centre showcases the early days of Bourke and beyond. Discover the Outback life of Henry Lawson, and the search for an inland sea. Hear the stories of the ‘women of the west’ including Nancy Bird Walton, who flew an air ambulance here in the 1930’s. Stop by the 110 year old Morrall’s bakery for a pie or pastry, follow the Heritage Trail through town, or visit the grave of Fred Hollows.  Overnight Bourke.

Day 9 - We head for Brewarrina on the Barwon River, and the 40,000-year-old Aboriginal Fish Traps - still working. The Brewarrina fish traps are one of the oldest man-made structures on earth. This elaborate network of rock weirs and pools stretches for around half a kilometre along the riverbed and was built by ancient tribes, to catch fish as they swam upstream. Heading south to Macquarie Marshes a UNESCO registered site of outstanding value as one of the most important wetland areas in the world. It is one of the most crucial breeding sites for waterbirds in Australia, with 77 species, along with over 150 other birds, as well as fish, turtles, frogs, snakes and mammals. We travel on via silo art in Coonamble then take the scenic road to the beautiful Warrumbungles for a delightful bush walk with wonderful views of The Breadknife.

The Warrumbungles is Australia’s only Dark Sky Park, meaning it is our only Internationally recognised park with an exceptional quality of starry nights and an environment specifically protected for its scientific, natural, educational, cultural heritage, and public enjoyment. Day 10 - In Coonabarabran  view the Diprotodon fossil remains discovered at nearby Tambar Springs. Back in the 'bungles take a tour of Siding Springs Observatory, home to Australia’s largest optical telescope. Since opening in 1964, The Australian National University has operated the observatory site hosting research telescopes from the ANU's Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics (RSAA), Las Cumbres Observatory (LCO) and many other institutions from around the world. Research is varied, from probing the depths of the cosmos in search of "Dark Energy" to searching the Milky Way for other planets and signs of life. We tour inside the dome of the largest telescope and learn of its workings plus visist the adjacent astronomy exhibition centre.

We depart the region mid morning and drive through Dunedoo, known for its poetry, hospitality, and name, or alternatively via Coolah, one of several towns to claim bragging rights as the home of the legendary Black Stump. It was here that the colloquial saying ‘Beyond the Black Stump’, meaning ‘beyond the limits of civilisation,’ is said to have originated.

On the way to Gulgong - the town that was on the way to Gulgong - the town that was on the $10 note. This small village from the gold rush days is a delight to take in the regional history and historic buildings. We are now a short drive to Mudgee where we’ll taste some local wines and have lunch in a vineyard. Travel via Lithgow and the Zig Zag railway and back to Sydney via spectacular Grose Valley views and Mt Tomah on Bells Line fo Road to Sydney and tour completion.

Day 2: Hughenden to Jundah – The Outback Awaits

 After a hearty breakfast, continue our journey to Richmond and visit Kronosaurus Korner, home to some of the world’s best-preserved marine fossils. Explore the fascinating exhibits, including the skeleton of a Kronosaurus, one of the largest marine reptiles to have ever lived.

From Richmond we travel to Winton, then Larks Quarry to view the dinosaur stampede. This occurred some 95 million years ago, when herds of small two-legged dinosaurs came to drink at the lake. There were at least150 dinosaurs of two different kinds - carnivorous coelurosaurs about the size of chickens, and slightly larger plant-eating ornithopods, some of them as large as emus. They were attacked by a meat-eating theropod – and the stampedes preserved at Larks Quarry

From here we then travel towards Jundah.Marvel at the changing landscapes as you traverse through the heart of Queensland’s outback. Dinner at a local pub, where you can mingle with locals and share stories. Overnight accommodation in a cozy outback lodge.

Day 3: Jundah to Eromanga – Dinosaur Capital

Day 1 – From Adelaide city or airport we depart via spectacular mountain scenery adjacent the Flinders Ranges. Travel via the rich wine producing region of the Clare Valley ((wine tasting option) and through the rich countryside of rural South Australia. Enjoy picturesque scenery, and rural town stops with lunch and morning teas. We cross the Goyder Line, view the Elder & Heyson Ranges, Wilpena Pound & Lake Torrens and visit the historic and award winning Prairie Hotel at Parachilna with great outback art before arrival at our cosy overnight stop at Leigh Creek or Marree on some tours.  L, D

Day 2 – At Marree we check out the ancient mosque, Old Ghan railway history and Lake Eyre Yacht Club. We visit the shores of Lake Eyre South and and unique Mound Springs, which are permanent water flows from the Great Artesian Basin. Itinerary Details

Day 1 – Adelaide to Coober Pedy – Depart 7:00 am via Port Wakefield , the giant winDfarms of Snowtown and Spencers Gulf to Port Augusta with its historic precinct for morning tea on the old Port Augusta Dock. We head north up the Stuart Highway via Pimba and visit Woomera's historic rocket museum (passengers willing) then vast historic sheep stations including Glendambo. Arrive Coober Pedy late afternoon for dinner and a comfy sleep in underground accommodation amongst the opals (or above ground option available) LD

Day 2 – You can check out the opals and fascinating Umoona underground museum before we head off into the desert to The Painted Hills including Mount Arckaringa - these Ochre coloured hills are a unique feature of this area. We arrrive Oodnadatta and have a cuppa at the famous Pink Roadhouse before visiting the Old Ghan Railway Museum full of wonderfull history of the establishment and operation of Oodnadatta and the railway. Oodnadatta was established on the Neales River in 1889 it was South Australia’s most northern railway town. It was a starting point for pioneering travellers heading north and a major railhead for cattle being walked down the northern stock routes. By 1893, Oodnadatta boasted a diverse population which included Afghans, Chinese & Europeans. We travel north from Oodnadatta following sections of the old Ghan Track and visit Pedirka Siding Ruins and the Old Dalhousie Springs Homestead.

We enter Witjira National Park and arrive at Dalhousie Springs, a vast area of natural springs outpouring from the Great Artesian Basin – Dalhousie Springs is a series of 60 natural artesian springs from the Great Artesian Basin. Swim option at Dalhousie Springs in 38-43 Deg C water. Enter the Simpson Desert Regional Reserve – Overnight camp here on the edge of the Simpson Desert. BLD

Day 3 – Heading into the Simpson Desert Regional Reserve we cross the floodplains of Spring Creek Delta moving into numerous salt lakes and higher sand dunes. We take a break at Purnie Bore before more of the French Line with spectacular views from the top and great feeling of humility and nurturing by nature within the dunes. We travel over and longitudinally between the sandhills. Great photo opportunities, maybe a dingo or two to see, sunsets and sunrises and wildflowers. Enjoy and evening campfire at our remote desert camp BLD

Day 4-6 – We cross more salt lakes and sand dunes, but also travel parallel to the dunes for a different perspective of the landscape. We visit the Approdinna Attora Knolls, high gypsum hills with a great lookout over the desert. We see remnants of other travellers and oil searches in the desert. Take a break at Poeppels Corner marking the meeting of QLD, NT & SA borders. Overnight under the stars in our remote camp.

Day 7 – We cross Eyre Creek and traverse the largest sandhill, Big Red is also known as Nappanerica Dune, on the western edge of Lake Nappanerica, and the eastern edge of The Simpson Desert. Overnight ensuite accommodation in Birdsville. BLD

Day 8– This morning, time to check out Birdsville and unquie features of this once bussling town which was a customs post for cattle heading down the track. Consider an optional flight over Lake Eyre, Goyder Lagoon & Simpson Desert. (book early). We visit the historic Burke and Wills camp tree by the Diamantina River After lunch we head past the famous Birdsville Race Track and down the Birdsville Track to Mungerannie for overnight. BLD

Day 9 – This morning we cross the Cooper Creek, and flood plain, visit old station ruins including Lake Harry. Arriving in Marree, explore this once thriving railway town that helped save Darwin during WWII with 56 trains per week ! Marree is at the junction of the Birdsville and Oodnadatta Tracks, and the path of the Great Northern  Railway / Old Ghan for over 100 years, so lots of history here including Aboriginal museum and history, Tom Kruse (Outback Mailman from “Back of Beyond”) and Donald Campbells Bluebird story. Take an optional 1 or 2 hour scenic flight over Lake Eyre to see the Warburton Groove, the main inflow channel to Lake Eyre, Elliot Price Conservation Park, Halligan Bay, Lake Eyre South and the Marree Man (a 4 km long, giant engraving in the landscape). On return to base, we see some of the sights of Marree, this once thriving Ghan Railway town. Marree is caretaker for some interesting railway relics, plus  the old mail truck used by legendary outback mailman Tom Kruse on the run from Marree to Birdsville. We visit the shores of Lake Eyre and Lake Eyre National Park and connect with the wonder of the bird and plant life revitalised by recent flooding rains in a permanent waterhole. Overnight in Marree with a few yarns around the campfire or at the local pub. BLD

Day 10 – Today we visit the restored ruins of the old Ghan railway town of Farina, which once supported 300 people. We view the giant Leigh Creek coal mine (now closed), enjoy a break at the Quandong cafe at Copley and travel via old Ghan railway towns to Parachilna, and in the foothills of the Flinders Ranges to Hawker and picturesque mountain landscapes via the Pitchi Ritchi Pass to arrive in Adelaide around 6pm. Day 1: Cairns to Hughenden – A Journey Back in Time

Depart from Cairns in a luxurious 4WD Landcruiser, designed for comfort and adventure. Enjoy the scenic drive through Queensland’s lush landscapes as you head towards Hughenden. Arrive in Hughenden, a town renowned for its rich prehistoric past. Visit the Flinders Discovery Centre to see impressive fossil displays, including a life-size replica of the Muttaburrasaurus. Enjoy a leisurely stroll around town, soaking in the charming outback atmosphere.

Dinner at a local eatery, featuring hearty Australian cuisine. Overnight stay at a comfortable local motel, ensuring a restful night for the adventures ahead.

Day 2: Hughenden to Jundah – The Outback Awaits

 After a hearty breakfast, continue our journey to Richmond and visit Kronosaurus Korner, home to some of the world’s best-preserved marine fossils. Explore the fascinating exhibits, including the skeleton of a Kronosaurus, one of the largest marine reptiles to have ever lived.

From Richmond we travel to Winton, then Larks Quarry to view the dinosaur stampede. This occurred some 95 million years ago, when herds of small two-legged dinosaurs came to drink at the lake. There were at least150 dinosaurs of two different kinds - carnivorous coelurosaurs about the size of chickens, and slightly larger plant-eating ornithopods, some of them as large as emus. They were attacked by a meat-eating theropod – and the stampedes preserved at Larks Quarry

From here we then travel towards Jundah.Marvel at the changing landscapes as you traverse through the heart of Queensland’s outback. Dinner at a local pub, where you can mingle with locals and share stories. Overnight accommodation in a cozy outback lodge.

Day 3: Jundah to Birdsville

Depart from Jundah, a charming outback town, and drive through the heart of the Queensland outback, passing expansive cattle stations and striking red landscapes. Arrive in Birdsville, check into your accommodation, and enjoy a relaxing meal at the famous Birdsville Hotel. Optional scenic flight over Lake Eyre is available, offering breathtaking views of Australia’s largest salt lake. Also visit Big Red, the tallest sand dune in the Simpson Desert, and experience the stunning desert panorama. Optional .Also explore the local area and its rich history. and an optional Lake Eyre flight. Overnight in Birdsville.

Day 4: Birdsville to Marree via Birdsville Track

After breakfast, visit the Burke and Wills Tree by the Diamantina River then begin your journey down the iconic Birdsville Track, offering an authentic outback experience with vast landscapes and historic landmarks. Visit Mungarannie and cross the Cooper Creek floodplain after travel through the Stoney Desert and Tirari Desert Arrive in Marree, a historic outpost with a rich Aboriginal and Afghan heritage. Explore the town, including the old Ghan Railway station and the Marree Hotel. Enjoy a hearty dinner and relax under the clear, star-studded sky. Overnight in Marree.

Day 5: Marree to Farina, Ochre Pits, Kanyaka Ruins, and Hawker and Adelaide

Depart Marree and head towards the historic ghost town of Farina. Wander through the ruins and imagine life in this once-thriving settlement of 300 people that supported s. Kidman & Co moving 500 catte a week to the Adelaide markets. . Continue to the Ochre Pits, a significant Aboriginal cultural site, and learn about the traditional uses of ochre. Visit the Kanyaka Ruins, a haunting reminder of the early settler’s challenges in the harsh outback environment. Arrive in Hawker, a small town at the edge of the Flinders Ranges.

Depart Hawker and drive to Quorn, a historic railway town. Explore the Pichi Richi Railway and its heritage steam trains history. Continue your journey south through picturesque landscapes, passing through small outback towns and rolling hills. Arrive in Adelaide and journey end approx 6pm

Next day options - Enjoy the city’s attractions, such as the Adelaide Central Market, North Terrace, and the beautiful parklands. Day 2 - Enjoy an optional scenic flight over Wilpena Pound and the Heyson and Flinders Ranges, before a 3 hours (or less) return walk with the kangaroos and spectacular River Red Gums into Wilpena Pound, viewing unique flora, Old Hills Homestead. with an optional hike up to Wangarra Hill lookout offering panoramic views of Wilpena Pound. Depart Wilpena Pound Resort and travel the fascinating Geological Trail through 800 million years of time via Brachina Gorge and Bunyeroo Gorge in the Flinders Ranges, viewing fossils including ancient stromatolites. Arrive at the old Ghan railway town of Parachilna and the famous Prairie Hotel, with tasty treats and exceptional Aboriginal art and jewellery for sale. We travel north here following the Heyson Range via Leigh Creek (viewing the massive open cut mine now closed) via Copley and Lindhurst past the Strzelecki Track and into the desert to Marree at the junction of the Oodnadatta and Birdsville Tracks.  Arrive Marree for overnight. Day 3 – From Marree we usually opt for an early morning flight, for best light and still air conditions. Alternatively flights may be from William Creek, depending on availability at time of booking and the duration of your flight chosen. If an extended flight is chosen, less time is available for ground viewing on the Oodnadatta Track or travel to William Creek.. While in Marree check out the ancient mosque and Old Ghan Railway history. Also the Lake Eyre Yacht Club and Birdsville Track. We follow the Oodnadatta Track Overland Telegraph Line & Old Ghan Railway Track and visit historic Coward Springs & Curdimurka Railway Sidings and the lookout at Lake Eyre South then the Mound Springs, natural springs bubbling up from the Artesian Basin. Visit the shores of Lake Eyre south and connect with the wonder of the bird and plant life revitalised by flooding rains. We visit the shore of Lake Eyre south to really appreciate the scale of these vast waterways, and stop at creeks and water holes along the route which are favourite spots for birds (including brolgas, egrets, swans, ducks, waders,  Herons and many more) and birdwatchers. Day 4 –Today we visit the Old Ghan ghost town of Farina, view the giant Leigh Creek coal mine, the fascinating and colourful Ochre Pits and travel via old Ghan railway towns including Wilson, Woolshed Flat via the Flinders Ranges to Hawker and stunning mountain landscapes.  We visit the impressive Kanyaka Station & view stone woolshed ruins (time permitting) as we follow the Old Ghan Line via Quorn, (possibly see the Pitchie Ritchie steam train if Sunday) through the Pitchi Ritchie Pass and the breathtaking view of Spencers Gulf & Port Augusta to arrive Adelaide around 6pm, delivered to your CBD accommodation or Adelaide airport. Day 1 – From Darwin we From Darwin travel via the Stuart Highway through Adelaide River and Pine Creek with its gold mining history and railway history. Continuing south to Katherine (NTs 3rd largest town) we check out the hot springs in the Katherine River and take a break here. From Katherine we head west on the Victoria Highway through the spectacular Victoria River escarpment country, following the river for some distance. Then to the remote town and Aboriginal community of Timber Creek. Travelling on passing by awesome rocky outcrops we cross the NT / WA border and gain an hour a half to arrive in Lake Argyle for a swim and dinner 

Day 2 – Kununurra (airport or town pickup for 1030 flight arrival from Darwin is available). Kununurra is a prosperous centre of mining, agriculture, tourism and Aboriginal art. We take a short tour through the Ord River Scheme of irrigated crop lands, then head for Fitzroy Crossing via Halls Creek with its gold mining history including the tale of Russian Jack, before the local Aboriginal Art Centre. This is Mesa country with impressive views over the vast grassland plains,  we pass the Tanami Track to Wolfe Creek crater and the “shortcut” to Alice Springs. Take a break at the scenic and bird lovers Marys Pool on the Mary River.  We continue westward on the Savannah Way then lunch at the picturesque Ngumban Cliffs.

An optional 2 hour Aboriginal guided cultural experience at Mimbi Caves (subject to availability) can be included if pre-booked – requires rocky walk in dark cave. Heading west we arrive at Fitzroy Crossing which is an education and supply centre for surrounding cattle stations and Aboriginal communities.  Our afternoon is topped off with a relaxing Darngku Geike Gorge sunset river cruise on the vast Fitzroy River, where we marvel at the high cliffs, annual flood records, stunning wildlife and river tales from our knowledgeable local guide. Day 3 – Today an optional Geike Gorge cruise is available before the 4 hour jorney via Giant boabs to Broome.

Day 1 – Depart from Sydney – travelling via the famous “Dog on the Tucker Box” (Canberra pickup available) over the Great Dividing Range to Wagga Wagga, and on to Narrandera in the Heart of Australia food bowl, the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area, then Hay to see the Shearers Hall of Fame at Shear Outback and learn of the rich life in the wool industry in early NSW. Overnight Balranald for a hearty local meal and overnight stop.

Day 2 – Into the desert and Mungo National Park to explore this ancient lake bed environment. Here the stories of the regions from local Aboriginal guide, and learn of the oldest known ritual burial in the world. Discover the Walls of China and the megafauna history of the area, explore the ancient Willandra Lakes and the historic sheep station and large and impressive shearing shed that served the area for around 100 years. Overnight Mungo Lodge, Mungo National Park.

Days 3 – Travel the Darling River via Pooncarie, Menindee and Kinchega National Park. Explore the memorial to Burke & Wills camp on the lakeshore, and a haven for wetland birds. Dinner at famous & delicious Mario’s Palace Hotel (full of murals from Priscilla fame) Overnight Broken Hill.

Day 4 – Explore Broken Hill highlights (your choice) including Pro Hart Gallery, The Line of Lode Lookout and Miners Memorial plus Desert Sculptures or Mutawintji National Park for exceptional rock art rich in Aboriginal history.

Day 5 – Explore Broken Hill in the morning then travel to Adelaide via Peterborough (railway history) Burra (historic Copper mine town) and tour via rural South Australia to Adelaide and tour completion this eve.
