 From Broken Hill to Port Pirie

The Heritage Rail Trail helped transform Australia from an agricultural outpost to an industrial economy in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The railway line transported silver, lead and zinc from the newly established BHP mining operation in Broken Hill to ships in Port Pirie, in South Australia's mid north.

In September 1883, seven ordinary working men pooled their cash to peg seven mineral leases on a remote, ragged-looking hill. They set to work on the Broken Hill with pick and shovel, unaware that within two years their endeavours would give rise to BHP and open up the largest deposit of lead, zinc and silver ever found.

The world was hungry for these commodities but there was a problem: how to get them out of the middle of the driest continent on the planet?

The new Heritage Rail Trail offers an outback journey like no other. We follow the remains of the Broken Hill to Port Pirie railway line, a relic of the steam age, a 400km piece of history that descends from the red dusts of New South Wales to the shimmering gulf waters of South Australia.

The little line was only 3 feet 6 inches wide but it overcame droughts, floods, locust plagues, derailments and political ill-will to become one of the busiest stretches of railway in the world. It helped to transform Australia from an agricultural outpost to an industrial economy.

This barely-known chapter of our nation's history comes to life as you journey through the 14 Heritage Rail Trail townships. Some are thriving, others are mere shadows of their past glory. All look forward to welcoming you and sharing their tales.

Details for Westbound tour – Sydney to Broken Hill & Adelaide option

Day 1 – Depart Sydney 8am via Blue Mountains and Katoomba with a brief stop at Echo Point and the Three Sisters. We visit the Silo Art, part of the Silo Art Trail phenomena helping revitalize communities across Australia at the old cement works at Portland  Travelling via the Great Western Highway we pass through Bathurst, where the NSW gold rush started, and was base for the worlds largest transport network at the time, the Cobb & Co coach company operating 30,000 horses. We stop for lunch by the Macquarie River at Wellington, after visiting the Wellington caves where Bush Ranger Ben Hall used to hide out. Passing through Dubbo, we are following the Macquarie River and heading for the marshlands. The soil & climate are getting dryer as we pass through Narromine (cotton growing), Trangie and Warren were we follow the river valley to our overnight at Willie Retreat in the marsh lands. BLD

Day 2 – We have all day to explore this lush lively area. Ibis, Egrets, Cormorants, Spoonbills and Herons are but a few of the breeding species found at the Macquarie Marshes. The Marshes include native plant species of Common Reed (Phragmites australis) and River Red Gum (Eucalyptus camaldulenis). Enjoy a relaxing picnic lunch in the marshlands, tour to “Sandy Camp” and experience the nature reserve section of the Northern Marshes visiting the ‘outback’ towns of Carinda (and outback pub) and Quambone. Day 3 – Travel the outback desert roads to Brewarrina, and see the Barwon River Aboriginal stone fish traps, over 6000 years old estimated to be the oldest man-made structures on Earth! We lunch in Bourke, with time to view the new Back O’Bourke Exhibition centre for some local history, including SR Kidman’s story as we are on the “Kidman Way”, the great droving route of Australia/’s famous cattle king. In the afternoon we take a Darling River cruise on the paddle boat PV Jandra. Paddleboats ran the Darling until 1931. The Darling River is over 1000 Km long and its headwaters stretch from central NSW to South East Queensland. We relax on the river, as the Jandra holds takes us on a one hour cruise that will give an insight into the paddleboat days and modern life on the river. The Jandra leaves from Kidman’s Camp at North Bourke. Overnight Bourke. BLD

Day 4 – This morning we head south with the Darling River to explore Gundabooka National Park. The park has open plains, a beautiful creek-fed gorge, and significant rock art and of course the magnificent Mt Gundabooka. There are 3 access points to the horse shoe shaped mountain ie the Mulgowan (Yapa) Art Site Walk – A wonderful easy trail which crosses a small rocky bluff into the Mulareenya Creek full of rock pools river gums and rock art on some of the overhangs. The Dry Tank walk, providing a wonderful setting for camping, the Dry Tank area is also an ideal picnic spot as it is here that the Little Mountain trail provides a wonderful view of Mt Gundabooka via a well marked interpretive walk.

The Ngama Malyan (Valley of the Eagle) walk via Bennett’s Gorge is an easy 1 km walk leads to a wonderful picnic spot at the base of Mt Gundabooka. The area of Gundabooka is the country of the Ngemba and Barkinji people. In addition to the area being vital for stone, water, food and medicine; it also holds major significance in terms of ceremony and creation. It is a major site on a great western songline. We travel down the river now meandering with the shady river gums, to the small river town of Louth were we overnight. Louth is a tiny and insignificant settlement on the banks of the Darling River which was established in 1859 when T.A. Matthews built a pub to cater for the passing river paddle boats carrying wool and wheat, and land-based trade. Louth was also a stopover on the Cobb & Co run. BLD

Tilpa Pub

Day 5 – We have an easy start to the day and travel the eastern side of the river, passing some of the grand old sheep stations that brought great wealth to this country over 100 years ago. At Tilpa, we cross the river to check out the pub and town, and enjoy some refreshments. Tilpa was once a thriving port and a ‘crossroad’ for people and trade moving along and across the Darling. The town has a monument to Breaker Morant, and is a popular place for fishing, bush walking and bird-watching ! We overnight here or optionally, depending on road conditions, at White Cliffs, NSW opal mining country. BLD

Day 6 – White Cliffs has a last-frontier kind of appeal. Its quirky, laconic residents have many stories to tell of wealth won and lost. Opals were found in the area as early as 1884 and the first store and hotel opened in 1892 as miners arrived to dig their fortune. By 1900, the population had risen to 1,000 people. To beat the summer heat, miners turned disused shafts into homes, stores and even hotels, a tradition that continues today. Here we will view the White Cliffs Solar Power Station and take a heritage town tour & opal mine tour. Heading through Wilcannia, a once important river port, we travel the western side of the Darling River to Menindee Lakes and Kinchega National Park with afternoon tea here and time to view the plentiful bird life before arrival in Broken Hill for overnight. Day 7 – Broken Hill was one of NSW wealthiest cities in its heyday when silver, lead and zinc were discovered, and where Australia’s biggest company BHP, built its wealth. The mine is past its use by date, but the town has revitalized, partly thnaks to the creative spirit of artists like Pro Hart. There is much to experience here, so the day is flexible enabling you to focus on things you want to see. Consider also a day tour to Mootwingee National Park. You can visit Pro Hart gallery or numerous others. An optional mine tour is a highlight of Broken Hill, as you descend into the once great mine on the ore lode operated by BHP. A Silverton tour is on the agenda late afternoon. Silverton has starred in countless films, television shows and commercials as a rustic original outback mining town. Once a bustling home to 3,000 people, residents began to leave in the 1880s when the nearby mines of Broken Hill commenced. Silverton offers a thriving art scene, a beautiful landscape and rustic old buildings of the rich heritage of the region. BLD

Day 1 – NSW Silo Art Trail tours take us through some lovely country towns and regional areas, and our 6 day tour from Sydney to Broken Hill includes the Portland silos at the old Cement Factory – beautiful artwork there on the cement works and symbolic of the restoration of the community in Portland exemplified by their site work and the wonderful annual art exhibition.

Moving on beyond Bathurst and the fascinating history of the gold rush and Cobb & Co coaches, then The Dish Exhibition centre at the giant CSIRO operated radiotelescope that brought the 1st moon landing images to Earth. Overnight Parkes

Day 2 – We visit Canowindra and the Museum of Fishes – ancient fish fossils from this area that was once an inland sea. Then Cowra (and railway roundhouse for the keen). Onwards to the popular Grenfell Wheat silos completed in 2019 and then moving to the well-known Weetalle Silos.  Driving West via Rankin Springs the country spreads and
the sky seems to get bigger as the sun sets over the Hay Plains. Overnight Goolgowi LD

Day 3 – Shear Outback, Wine Tasting, Murray Darling Junction, Wentworth

Today we travel to Hay, one of Australia’s major wool growing areas, and a visit to the Shear Outback centre takes
to you into the rich life in the wool industry in early NSW. We’ll take the backroad through saltbush plains, that are home to over 50 farming
families. Tiny villages are the social hub for many of the large outback
stations, where life can often be lonely. . Follow the Murray River to Trentham Estate,
a family-owned winery on the banks of the Murray River. Enjoy an
afternoon wine tasting by the river before we head to Wentworth. In the
late 1800’s Wentworth was the largest river port in Australia with over
400 boats plying the Murray and the Darling Rivers, which meet here.

Day 4 – From Wentworth visit the junction of the Murray and Darling Rivers, Australia’s biggest river system and also visit Wentworth Pioneer Museum with life-size megafauna replicas from the local area including the cuddly 2-metre high Diprotodons. Into the desert and Mungo National Park to explore this ancient lakebed environment. Here the stories of the regions from a local guide, and learn of the oldest known ritual burial in the world. Discover the Walls of China and megafauna history of the area, explore the ancient Willandra Lakes and the historic sheep station and large and impressive shearing shed that served the area for around 100 years. Overnight Mungo Lodge, Mungo National Park.

Day 5 – Travel the Darling River via Pooncarie, Menindee and Kinchega National Park. Explore the memorial to Burke & Wills camp on the lakeshore, and a haven for wetland birds. Into Broken Hill and dinner at famous & delicious Mario’s Palace Hotel (full of murals from Priscilla Queen of the Desert fame) Overnight Broken Hill.

Day 6 – Tour completes at 10 am after breakfast. Explore in the footsteps of Burke & Wills (visit the famous Dig Tree & historic reserve) this remote and fascinating area around the junction of the NSW, QLD & SA borders, known as Cameron Corner. Travel through giant sheep stations from over 100 years ago, witness the Moomba oil fields & mighty Cooper Creek at Innamincka. Travelling in our luxury 4WD Landcruisers, you can stand at the famous Cameron Corner, and stay overnight at the "corner store". Discover ancient Aboriginal rock art sites and hear the tales of the great Cattle drives as we travel the Strzelecki Track - pioneered by Captain Starlight as he stole 1000 cattle from Queensland QLD in 1870. Later, Sidney Kidman & Co and many others made their fortunes on the track pioneered by Starlight.

Cameron Corner Country Tour Details ...

Day 1 - Depart Broken Hill (or Adelaide day prior) through the Barrier Ranges on the Silver City Highway via Packsaddle for Milparinka and the Albert Hotel. Appreciate this once thriving gold mining town at the restored Milparinka Heritage Precinct. We check out the Tibooburra pub and considerable town before heading into the Sturt Desert & crossing the Grey Range with a stop at Fort Grey. The park protects an enormous arid landscape of space and solitude. The rolling red-sand dunes of the Strzelecki desert ripple through the western section, graduating past surprising wetlands surrounded by white sands. After some great opportunities for photos, and to explore we arrive at Cameron Corner on the 3 states corner (NSW, SA & QLD) for a tasty meal and overnight at the "Corner Store".

Day 2 - Travel via Bollards Lagoon, the Yellow Bus site (now buried) and Merty Merty station, crossing the sand hills of the Strzelecki Desert, and Creek as we head for the Strzelecki Track and the uncanny Moomba oil & gas fields. We pass the site of the geothermal power plant / hot rocks project of Geodynamics where Australia has the hottest rocks on Earth, outside of volcanic areas. Arriving in Innaminka, check out the birdlife at sunset on the Cooper Creek before a delicious meal at the Innamincka Hotel Overnight Innaminka.

Hot Rocks - Geologists think that 10 million years ago, the granites in the Cooper Basin, South Australia, were exposed at the surface. Since that time they have been covered by a sedimentary layer, four kilometres thick, that acts as an overlying blanket; trapping the heat and preventing it from escaping to the atmosphere.

The heat is created by naturally occurring radiogenic decay that heats the granite to more than 250 degrees Celsius. The granite temperatures in Europe are only 180 degrees Celsius. The granite belt in the Cooper Basin is fractured in horizontal layers and these fractures naturally contain water at very high pressures – up to 5, 000 pounds per square inch.

Day 3 -  In 1928 the Australian Inland Mission (a part of the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia) built a hospital at Innaminka, the Elizabeth Symon Nursing Home. Known as the Mission hospital, it was restored with funding from by Dick Smith and Australian Geographic, and now serves as a museum and National Parks office. A fascinating historical record here.

Today we explore more of the Cooper Creek region and Coongie Lakes, (conditional on road being open) a unique wetlands area in the desert sandhills approximately 100 km from Innaminka, attracting birdlife from afar. A rare chance to visit this remote and surrounding area

Malkumba-Coongie Lakes National Park is one of the most spectacular of South Australia's natural attractions. The park is a pristine water world made up of channels, waterholes, lakes, internal deltas, shallow floodplains and interdune corridors and swamps. Motorboats, camp fires, fishing and generators are not permitted in the park, ensuring a genuine wilderness experience.

Coongie Lakes is listed as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance. The waterbird diversity is high for an arid wetland and is a significant feeding, resting and breeding site for an enormous number of birds that migrate to the area. The wetland plays host to a diversity of wildlife including fish, reptiles and frogs. It transforms into a breeding ground for an enormous number of migratory birds from around the world. The contrast from sand dunes to vast wetlands is remarkable. The park is a true wilderness for visitors seeking a place of solitude to enjoy nature. Take advantage of the wilderness – camp, canoe, enjoy photography, bushwalk, discover the Aboriginal history and generally relax in the calm surrounds of the wetlands. Overnight Innamincka.

Day 4 - For the early birds take a stroll to the nearby Coopers Creek look at creek side birdlife usually brimming with life.  - and quirky Innamincka - before we head for the SA/ QLD border and Nappa Merrie Station (previously owned by S Kidman & Co) to the Burke & Wills Dig Tree. Here, Burke & Wills, their support team waited 3 months and provisions were buried for the northern explorers. The support left 1 day before Burke & Wills return, and the supplies were not found leading to their demise. Lots of history, and birdlife here on the infamous Cooper Creek. Heading south we travel through picturesque desert then into sand hill country via Orientos, Santos and Sullivans Tank before crossing the border into NSW at the Warri Gate on the Dingo fence, and once again into the Sturt Desert. Taking in vast stony plains, the towering red-sand hills of the great Strzelecki Desert and the unusual flat-topped mesas around the Olive Downs, this park covers 340,000 hectares of classic outback terrain. Thanks to the protection of the dingo-proof fence, there are large populations of western grey and red kangaroos. We arrive Tibooburra for dinner & overnight at the local hotel in this most remote NSW desert town.

Day 5 - Time to explore Tibooburra, and the Outdoor Pastoral Museum.  Flat-topped mesas and fantastic views characterise the central Jump-Up country. Remnant gidgee woodland, the catchment system of the ephemeral Twelve-Mile Creek and gibber and grass-covered plains dominate the east, while 450 million year old granite tors surrounding Tibooburra form part of the southern boundary of the park. We leave town and head for Pooles Grave & Depot Glen where in 1845 Charles Sturt's men were stranded and lay camp. Travelling south via salt lakes and vast plains we arrive Broken Hill late afternoon with many a tale to share. BLD

Time to explore Tibooburra, and the Outdoor Pastoral Museum.  Flat-topped mesas and fantastic views characterise the central Jump-Up country. Remnant gidgee woodland, the catchment system of the ephemeral Twelve-Mile Creek and gibber and grass-covered plains dominate the east, while 450 million-year-old granite tors surrounding Tibooburra form part of the southern boundary of the park. Day 2 - Today we are heading into the Sturt Desert & Sturt National park, crossing the Grey Range with a stop at Fort Grey. The park protects an enormous arid landscape of space and solitude. After some great opportunities for photos, we pass through the Dog Fence and arrive at Cameron Corner on the 3 states corner (NSW, SA & QLD) for a thirst quencher and souvenirs, and check out the "Corner Store" (conditional on the border being open).

Travel to White Cliffs and explore the opal mines history, and maybe find some local opal bargains. Then to our overnight accommodation underground BLD

Day 3 - Now to the Darling River Run via Wilcannia, with once a bustling port for the paddle steamers, now with its beautiful and historic sandstone public architecture. On up the Darling River Run to river towns of Louth & Tilpa - with a cuppa and tour at the famous Dunlop Station. Dunlop Station is an historic sheep station property located on the Darling River. Once a million acres it has a 45 stand shearing shed which was the first shed to have mechanical shears. with the check out the paddle boat and big wool and sheep station history of this region. Gundabooka National Park surrounds Mt Gundabooka and has unique Aboriginal Rock art to explore, including a pleasant and easy walk through this isolated National Park.  Overnight Bourke BLD

Day 4 - Check out Bourkes history and a riverboat cruise before we head for Brewarrina on the Barwon River,  and the 40,000-year-old Aboriginal Fish Traps - still working. The Brewarrina fish traps are one of the oldest man-made structures on earth. This elaborate network of rock weirs and pools stretches for around half a kilometre along the riverbed and was built by ancient tribes, to catch fish as they swam upstream. Heading south tt the Ramsar listed Macquarie Marshes we watch the many waterbirds late afternoon before overnight at the nearby Willie Retreat (option for the birdies) or Coonamble Motel BLD

Day 5 - An early start for a bush walk in the Warrumbungles before travels via to the Mudge vineyards for a wine tasting. Travel the scenic Victoria Pass via Lithgow, see the Zig Zag Railway and Grose Valley before arrival back in Sydney around 6 pm

Day 12 - An early start for the birdwatchers at Macquarie Marshes before travels to Coonamble (more silo art), Warrumbungles National Park, and a delightful bush walk to view The Breadknife, a stunning rock outcrop. Siding Springs Observatory is next with a tour inside the observatory to check out the latest astronomical discoveries, then travel through this stunning volcanic region to Coonabarabran for overnight.

Day 13 - We head for Merriwa via the Goulburn River National Park and view more silo art at this authentic township of Merriwa. Gulgong - the town that was on the $10 note - is next on the list. This quaint and historic village has lots of history from the gold rush days and is a delight to take in the regional history and historic buildings. We are now a short drive to the Mudgee vineyards for a wine tasting at some of the districts best vineyards on this rich red volcanic soil - at Poets Corner - and other select wineries for a delicious lunch. Overnight Mudgee

Day 14 -  Explore this thriving local community of Mudgee before travelling the scenic Victoria Pass via Lithgow, see the Zig Zag Railway, Govetts rare views of the Grosse Valley and the Wollomi Pines at the Blue Mountains Botanic Gardens at Mt Tomah before descending the mountains via Bells Line of Road and arrival back in Sydney around 5 pm.

We explore some of The Silo At Trail which is transforming Australian regional towns. Join us on an adventure through rural Australia to witness these great masterpieces and the local hospitality.

Options include a day tour to Mutawintji National Park for exceptional rock art rich in Aboriginal history.

Day 1 –  Our tour takes us through some lovely country towns and regional areas, from Sydney to Broken Hill and return includes stunning views from Echo Point and the Three Sisters at Katoomba (always a marvellous delight) then to decent Victoria Pass to Lithgow. Moving on to Bathurst and home of the fascinating history of the gold rush and Cobb & Co coaches.

We visit  Canowindra, ballooning capital of Australia and the Museum of Fishes – viewing ancient fish fossils from this area that was once an inland sea. Then Cowra (and railway roundhouse for the keen). Onwards we travel via Weddin Mountains National Park, visiting the popular Grenfell Wheat silos completed in 2019.  Driving West toward Rankin Springs the country spreads and the sky seems to get bigger we know the perfect place to see our first Big Sky sunset. Day 2 – Weethalle Silos Rankine Springs Hay Balranald Mungo National Park

Beyond West Wyalong to the well-known Weethalle Silos. then Rankine Springs, Hay and Balranald. Hay was one of Australia’s major wool growing areas, and a visit to the Shear Outback centre takes to you into the rich life in the wool industry in early NSW. From historic Balranald into the desert region and Mungo National Park to explore this ancient lakebed environment. Here the stories of the oldest known ritual burial in the world. Discover the Walls of China and megafauna history of the area, explore the ancient Willandra Lakes and the historic sheep station and large and impressive shearing shed that served the area for around 100 years. Overnight Mungo Lodge, Mungo National Park.

Days 3 – Travel the Darling River via Pooncarie, Menindee and Kinchega National Park. Explore the memorial to Burke & Wills at their campsite on the lakeshore and a haven for wetland birds. Into Broken Hill and dinner at the famous & delicious Mario’s Palace Hotel (full of the original murals from Priscilla Queen of the Desert fame) Overnight Broken Hill.

Day 4 – Explore Broken Hill highlights (your choice) options include Pro Hart Gallery, The Line of Lode Lookout, a mine tour, and Miners Memorial plus Desert Sculptures or Mutawintji National Park (optional extra day tour) for exceptional rock art rich in Aboriginal history.

Day 5 - Depart Broken Hill through to White Cliffs and explore the opal mines history, and maybe find some local opal bargains. Now to the Darling River Run via Wilcannia, once a bustling port for the wool laden paddle steamers, now with its beautiful and historic sandstone public architecture. On up the Darling River Run to river towns of Louth & Tilpa - with a cuppa and tour at the famous Dunlop Station (locals willing). Dunlop Station is an historic sheep station property located on the Darling River. Once a million acres it has a 45 stand shearing shed which was the first shed to have mechanical shears. Check out the paddle boat and big wool and sheep station history of this region. following the Darling, we visit the historic towns of Tipla and Louth before Gundabooka National Park. The park surrounds Mt Gundabooka and has unique Aboriginal Rock art to explore, including a pleasant and easy walk through this isolated National Park. Back on the main track, we head for Overnight in Bourke BLD

Day 6 - Bourke

The impressive ‘Back O’Bourke’ centre showcases the early days of Bourke and beyond. Discover the Outback life of Henry Lawson, and the search for an inland sea. Marvel at the stories of the ‘women of the west’ including Nancy Bird Walton, who flew an air ambulance here in the 1930’s. Stop by the 110 year old Morrall’s bakery for a pie or pastry, follow the Heritage Trail through town, or visit the grave of Fred Hollows. Cruise along the Darling on the Jandra, a historic paddleboat to recall the river boat history. In recent years Bourke has undergone a remarkable revitalisation and is now a shining light in the remote west of NSW. Take a cultural walk to learn about the history of Aboriginal people in Bourke and the personal connection formed with the land and it’s richness. Tonight we’ll join a campfire dinner under a coolabah tree, (if available) under a starlit sky, with plenty of music, poetry, and storytelling all about outback of Australia. Overnight Bourke. Day 7 - We head for Brewarrina on the Barwon River, and the 40,000-year-old Aboriginal Fish Traps - still working. The Brewarrina fish traps are one of the oldest man-made structures on earth. This elaborate network of rock weirs and pools stretches for around half a kilometre along the riverbed and was built by ancient tribes, to catch fish as they swam upstream.

Heading south to Macquarie Marshes a UNESCO registered site of outstanding value as one of the most important wetland areas in the world. It is one of the most crucial breeding sites for waterbirds in Australia, with 77 species, along with over 150 other birds, as well as fish, turtles, frogs, snakes and mammals. We travel on to another  Silo Art in Coonamble then take the scenic road to the beautiful Warrumbungles for a delightful bush walk with wonderful views of The Breadknife. We have a tour of Siding Springs Observatory, home to Australia’s largest telescope. We have an optional extra cost guided tour of the night sky this evening. The Warrumbungles is Australia’s only Dark Sky Park, meaning it is our only Internationally recognised park with an exceptional quality of starry nights and an environment specifically protected for its scientific, natural, educational, cultural heritage, and public enjoyment. Day 8 - Coonabarabran Black Stump Coolah Goulburn River NP, Hunter Valley Sydney

Drive through Coolah, one of several towns to claim bragging rights as the home of the legendary Black Stump. It was here that the colloquial saying ‘Beyond the Black Stump’, meaning ‘beyond the limits of civilisation,’ is said to have originated.

On the way to Denman, we pass through Cassilis and Merriwa, passing Collaroy, a once-grand sheep station of this productive area,. Merriwa has more silo art, then on via spectacular rock formations, Sandy Hollow and the winding Goulburn River to Denman, the Hunter Valley and return to Sydney by approx 7 pm (delivered to your door if pre-arranged)

Itinerary

Day 1 – Depart Sydney for the Blue Mountains with morning tea at stunning views from Govetts Leap over the Grose Valley. Moving on via Lithgow to Bathurst and the fascinating history of the gold rush and Cobb & Co coaches. We travel via Orange to near Parkes to visit The Dish Exhibition Centre at the giant CSIRO operated radiotelescope that brought the 1st moon landing images to Earth. Back in Parkes, and less famous is the King's Castle, Australia's very own Elvis Presley museum created by the original yellow Wiggle Greg Page.

Heading west we travel beside the Indian Pacific railway route and visit Manildra, Bogan Gate and Condobolin, in extensive Murray Darling Basin wheat, grain, sheep and cattle producing areas with a taste of the far west of NSW. Arrive for overnight at Lake Cargellico.

Day 2 - We depart for Hillston, once an important stop for the stagecoaches of Cobb and Co. then on via Ivanhoe on the Cobb Highway, part of the Kidman Way. Arriving in Menindee we visit Kinchega National Park, to view the birdlife of Menindee Lakes then to nearby Burke and Wills camp on the banks of the Darling River. It's now a short hop to Broken Hill for dinner at the famous & delicious Mario’s Palace Hotel (full of the original murals from Priscilla Queen of the Desert fame) Overnight Broken Hill.

Day X – OPTIONAL EXTRA DAY TO Explore Broken Hill highlights (your choice) options include Pro Hart Gallery, The Line of Lode Lookout, a mine tour, and Miners Memorial plus Desert Sculptures or Lake Mungo or Mutawintji National Parks (optional extra day tour) for exceptional rock art rich in Aboriginal history. Day 3 - Depart Broken Hill through the Barrier Range on the Silver City Highway via Packsaddle for Milparinka and Depot Glen, where explorer Charles Sturt spent 6 months in 1845 with a team of men, waiting for rain and cooler conditions. This area has been extensively mined for tin, lead and gold and operated large sheep stations. Appreciate this once thriving gold mining town at the restored Milparinka Heritage Precinct. Time to explore Tibooburra, and the Outdoor Pastoral Museum.  Flat-topped mesas and fantastic views characterise the central Jump-Up country. Remnant gidgee woodland, the catchment system of the ephemeral Twelve-Mile Creek and gibber and grass-covered plains dominate the east, while 450 million-year-old granite tors surrounding Tibooburra form part of the southern boundary of the park. We check out the Tibooburra pubs and considerable town and mining history before overnight here at Family Hotel or Granites Motel BLD

Day 4 - Today we are heading into the Sturt Desert & Sturt National park, crossing the Grey Range with a stop at Fort Grey. The park protects an enormous arid landscape of space and solitude. The rolling red sand dunes of the Strzelecki desert ripple through the western section, graduating past surprising wetlands surrounded by white sands. After some great opportunities for photos, we pass through the Dog Fence and arrive at Cameron Corner on the 3 states corner (NSW, SA & QLD) for a thirst quencher and souvenirs, and check out the "Corner Store" (conditional on the border being open).

Travel to White Cliffs and explore the opal mines history, and maybe find some local opal bargains. Then to our overnight accommodation underground BLD

Day 5 - Now to the Darling River Run via Wilcannia, with once a bustling port for the paddle steamers, now with its beautiful and historic sandstone public architecture. Day 7 - An early start for a bush walk in the Warrumbungles before travels via to the Mudge vineyards for a wine tasting. Travel the scenic Victoria Pass via Lithgow, see the Zig Zag Railway and Grose Valley before arrival back in Sydney around 6 pm

Day 2 – SHEAR OUTBACK, OUTBACK VILLAGES, WENTWORTH

Hay was one of Australia’s major wool growing areas, and a visit to the Shear Outback centre takes to you into the rich life in the wool industry in early NSW. We’ll take the backroad through seemingly endless saltbush plains, that are home to over 50 farming families. Tiny villages are the social hub for many of the large outback stations, where life can often be lonely. We’ll have lunch at The Homebush Hotel at Penarie, true backcountry pub, complete with kangaroos wandering by. The pub opened in 1878 and is still the mainstay of the local community. The famous bar, with its huge central open fireplace, character-filled “shearing board” mural, and local artefacts has been home to many a trapper, teamster, drover, shearer, truckie, mailman, traveller and ‘local’ over the past 142 years. Follow the Murray River to Trentham Estate, a family-owned winery on the banks of the Murray River. Enjoy an afternoon wine tasting by the river before we head to Wentworth. In the late 1800’s Wentworth was the largest river port in Australia with over 400 boats plying the Murray and the Darling Rivers, which meet here. Overnight Wentworth Meals: BL

Day 8 - Now to the Darling River Run via Wilcannia, once a bustling port for the wool laden paddle steamers, now with its beautiful and historic sandstone public architecture. On up the Darling River Run to river towns of Louth & Tilpa - with a cuppa and tour at the famous Dunlop Station. Dunlop Station is an historic sheep station property located on the Darling River. Once a million acres it has a 45 stand shearing shed which was the first shed to have mechanical shears. with the check out the paddle boat and big wool and sheep station history of this region. Gundabooka National Park surrounds Mt Gundabooka and has unique Aboriginal Rock art to explore, including a pleasant and easy walk through this isolated National Park.  Overnight Bourke BLD

Day 9 - BOURKE - The impressive ‘Back O’Bourke’ centre showcases the early days of Bourke and beyond. Discover the ‘Outback’ life of Henry Lawson, the search for an inland sea. Marvel at the stories of the ‘women of the west’ including Nancy Bird Walton, who flew an air ambulance here in the 1930’s. Stop by the 110 year old Morrall’s bakery for a pie or pastry, follow the Heritage Trail through town, or visit the grave of Fred Hollows. Cruise along the Darling on the Jandra, an historic paddle boat to recall the river boat history. In recent years Bourke has undergone a remarkable revitalisation and is now a shining light in positive indigenous opportunities. Take a cultural walk to learn about the history of Aboriginal people in Bourke and the personal connection formed with the land and it’s richness. Tonight we’ll join a campfire dinner under a coolabah tree, (if available) under a starlit sky, with plenty of music, poetry, and storytelling all about outback of Australia. Overnight Bourke. Day 10 - We head for Brewarrina on the Barwon River, and the 40,000-year-old Aboriginal Fish Traps - still working. The Brewarrina fish traps are one of the oldest man-made structures on earth. This elaborate network of rock weirs and pools stretches for around half a kilometre along the riverbed and was built by ancient tribes, to catch fish as they swam upstream. Heading south to Macquarie Marshes a UNESCO registered site of outstanding value as one of the most important wetland areas in the world. It is one of the most crucial breeding sites for waterbirds in Australia, with 77 species, along with over 150 other birds, as well as fish, turtles, frogs, snakes and mammals. We travel on to our final art silo in Coonamble then take the scenic road to the beautiful Warrumbungles for a delightful bush walk with wonderful views of The Breadknife. We have a tour of Siding Springs Observatory, home to Australia’s largest telescope. We have a guided tour of the night sky this evening. The Warrumbungles is Australia’s only Dark Sky Park, meaning it is our only Internationally recognised park with an exceptional quality of starry nights and an environment specifically protected for its scientific, natural, educational, cultural heritage, and public enjoyment. Day 11 - GULGONG, MUDGEE, SYDNEY

Drive through Dunedoo, known for its poetry, hospitality, and name, or alternatively via Coolah, one of several towns to claim bragging rights as the home of the legendary Black Stump. It was here that the colloquial saying ‘Beyond the Black Stump’, meaning ‘beyond the limits of civilisation,’ is said to have originated.

On the way to Gulgong - the town that was on the way to Gulgong - the town that was on the $10 note. This small village from the gold rush days is a delight to take in the regional history and historic buildings. We are now a short drive to Mudgee where we’ll taste some local wines and have lunch in a vineyard. Travel via the Zig Zag railway and back to Sydney via spectacular Grose Valley views and Mt Tomah on Bells Line fo Road to Sydney Meals: BL

Itinerary

Day 1 – Depart Sydney for the Blue Mountains with morning tea at stunning views from Govetts Leap over the Grose Valley. Moving on via Lithgow to Bathurst and the fascinating history of the gold rush and Cobb & Co coaches. We travel via Orange to near Parkes to visit The Dish Exhibition Centre at the giant CSIRO operated radiotelescope that brought the 1st moon landing images to Earth. Back in Parkes, and less famous is the King's Castle, Australia's very own Elvis Presley museum created by the original yellow Wiggle Greg Page.

Heading west we travel beside the Indian Pacific railway route and visit Manildra, Bogan Gate and Condobolin, in extensive Murray Darling Basin wheat, grain, sheep and cattle producing areas with a taste of the far west of NSW. Arrive for overnight at Lake Cargellico.

Day 2 - We depart for Hillston, once an important stop for the stagecoaches of Cobb and Co. then on via Ivanhoe on the Cobb Highway, part of the Kidman Way. Arriving in Menindee we visit Kinchega National Park, to view the birdlife of Menindee Lakes then to nearby Burke and Wills camp on the banks of the Darling River. It's now a short hop to Broken Hill for dinner at the famous & delicious Mario’s Palace Hotel (full of the original murals from Priscilla Queen of the Desert fame) Overnight Broken Hill.

Day X – OPTIONAL EXTRA DAY (please ask) to Explore Broken Hill highlights (your choice) options include Pro Hart Gallery, The Line of Lode Lookout, a mine tour, and Miners Memorial plus Desert Sculptures or Lake Mungo or Mutawintji National Parks (optional extra day tour) for exceptional rock art rich in Aboriginal history. Day 3 - Depart Broken Hill through the Barrier Range on the Silver City Highway via Packsaddle for Milparinka and Depot Glen, where explorer Charles Sturt spent 6 months in 1845 with a team of men, waiting for rain and cooler conditions. This area has been extensively mined for tin, lead and gold and operated large sheep stations. Appreciate this once thriving gold mining town at the restored Milparinka Heritage Precinct. Time to explore Tibooburra, and the Outdoor Pastoral Museum.  Flat-topped mesas and fantastic views characterise the central Jump-Up country. Remnant gidgee woodland, the catchment system of the ephemeral Twelve-Mile Creek and gibber and grass-covered plains dominate the east, while 450 million-year-old granite tors surrounding Tibooburra form part of the southern boundary of the park. We check out the Tibooburra pubs and considerable town and mining history before overnight here at Family Hotel or Granites Motel BLD

Day 4 - Today we are heading into the Sturt Desert & Sturt National park, crossing the Grey Range with a stop at Fort Grey. The park protects an enormous arid landscape of space and solitude. The rolling red sand dunes of the Strzelecki desert ripple through the western section, graduating past surprising wetlands surrounded by white sands. After some great opportunities for photos, we pass through the Dog Fence and into South Australia to arrive at Cameron Corner on the 3 states corner (NSW, SA & QLD) for a thirst quencher and souvenirs and check out the "Corner Store" (conditional on the border being open).

Travel on via Bollards Lagoon, the Yellow Bus (now buried) and Merty Merty station, crossing the sand hills of the Strzelecki Desert, and Creek as we head for the Strzelecki Track and the uncanny Moomba oil & gas fields. We pass the geothermal power plant / hot rocks project of Geodynamics where Australia has the hottest rocks on Earth, outside of volcanic areas.

Geologists think that 10 million years ago, the granites in the Cooper Basin, South Australia, were exposed at the surface. Since that time they have been covered by a sedimentary layer, four kilometres thick, that acts as an overlying blanket; trapping the heat and preventing it from escaping to the atmosphere.

The heat is created by naturally occurring radiogenic decay that heats the granite to more than 250 degrees Celsius. The granite temperatures in Europe are only 180 degrees Celsius. The granite belt in the Cooper Basin is fractured in horizontal layers and these fractures naturally contain water at very high pressures – up to 5,000 pounds per square inch. Check out the birdlife at sunset on the flooding Cooper Creek before a delicious meal at the Innamincka Hotel, adjacent the famous old Aboriginal Mission Hospital restored as National Parks offices. Day 5 - A chance for an early walk and look at creek side birdlife - and quirky Innamincka - before we head for the SA/QLD border. This is providing the Queensland border is open to NSW travellers - if not we see Burkes and Wills grave sites (in SA) and enjoy a Cooper creek river walk, then return to Tibooburra via the scenic Old Strzelecki Track

If QLD border open we travel to Nappa Merrie Station (still owned by S Kidman & Co) to the Burke & Wills Dig Tree. Here Burke & Wills their support team waited 3 months and provisions were buried for the northern explorers. The support left 1 day before Burke & Wills return, and the supplies were not found leading to their demise. Lots of history, and birdlife here on the infamous Cooper Creek. Heading south we travel through picturesque desert then sand hill country via Orientos, Santos and Sullivans Tank before crossing the border into NSW at the Warri Gate on the Dingo fence, and once again into the Sturt Desert. 

Taking in vast stony plains, the towering red-sand hills of the great Strzelecki Desert and the unusual flat-topped mesas around the Olive Downs, this park covers 340,000 hectares of classic outback terrain. Thanks to the protection of the dingo-proof fence, there are large populations of western grey and red kangaroos. We arrive at Tibooburra for dinner & overnight at the local hotel in this most remote NSW desert town.

Day 6 - Return to Broken Hill via Sturt's original route via Pincally Station and fascinating geology to Broken Hill.

Day 7 - Now to Wilcannia, with once a bustling port on the Darling River for the wool trade of paddle steamers, now with its beautiful and historic sandstone public architecture. Heading east we visit the Aboriginal rock art site of Mt Grenfell, before Cobar where we check out the mining museum, before overnight in the historic flood town of Nyngan, close to Macquarie Marshes.

The support left in the morning of the same day before Burke & Wills returned, but they were too weak to follow. Lots of history, and birdlife here on the infamous Cooper Creek. Heading south we travel through picturesque desert then sand hill country via Orientos, Santos and Sullivans Tank before crossing the border into NSW at the Warri Gate on the Dingo fence, and once again into the Sturt Desert. Taking in vast stony plains, the towering red-sand hills of the great Strzelecki Desert and the unusual flat-topped mesas around the Olive Downs, this park covers 340,000 hectares of classic outback terrain. Thanks to the protection of the dingo-proof fence, there are large populations of western grey and red kangaroos. We arrive Tibooburra for dinner & overnight at the local hotel in this most remote NSW desert town.

Day 4 - Time to explore Tibooburra, and the Outdoor Pastoral Museum.  Flat-topped mesas and fantastic views characterise the central Jump-Up country. Remnant gidgee woodland, the catchment system of the ephemeral Twelve-Mile Creek and gibber and grass-covered plains dominate the east, while 450 million year old granite tors surrounding Tibooburra form part of the southern boundary of the park. We leave town and  head for Pooles Grave & Depot Glen where in 1845 Charles Sturts men were stranded and lay camp. Travelling south via salt lakes and vast plains we arrive Broken Hill late afternoon wth manay a tale to share.

Day 1 —- SYDNEY, MUDGEE GULGONG, COONABARABRAN

Depart Sydney via Bells Line of Road, via Mt Tomah with spectacular views of the Grose Valley, and look at the Zig Zag Railway at Clarence. From Lithgow we are now a short drive to Mudgee where we'll taste some local wines and have lunch in a vineyard. BL

Check out Poets Corner, on the way to Gulgong - the town that was on the $10 note. This small village from the gold rush days is a delight to take in the regional history and historic buildings. We travel via Dunedoo, known for its poetry, hospitality, and name, then check out the murals of Mendooran before overnight Coonabarabran LD

Day 2 — Warrumbungle Bushwalk, Macquarie Marshes,

The Warrumbungles are calling and we take an approximate 1 hour walk with views of the spectacular breadknife from Camp Blackman. Burbie Canyon walking track is a gentle 2km stroll through a sandstone gorge and is particularly popular for birdwatching. On return we have a tour of Siding Springs Observatory, home to Australia’s largest optical telescope.

Heading west now via silo art in Coonamble then to Macquarie Marshes a UNESCO registered site of outstanding value as one of the most important wetland areas in the world. It is one of the most crucial breeding sites for waterbirds in Australia, with 77 species, along with over 150 other birds, as well as fish, turtles, frogs, snakes and mammals. Travel on via Walgett, and visit the local museum with its wool industry heritage, then to Lightning Ridge for an afternoon experience of the Chambers of the Black Hand Opal Mine Art Carving Tour and a tour of the region and opal traders in this fascinating outback town. Day 3 - Lightning Ridge, Brewarrina fish traps, Bourke

Discover more of Lightning Ridge, check out the opal dealers and famous bore baths. We head for Brewarrina on the Barwon River, and the 40,000-year-old Aboriginal Fish Traps - still working. The Brewarrina fish traps are one of the oldest man-made structures on earth. This elaborate network of rock weirs and pools stretches for around half a kilometre along the riverbed and was built by ancient tribes, to catch fish as they swam upstream. Overnight Bourke. Day 4— BOURKE, Cruise on The Darling On The Jandra paddleboat, Gundabooka National Park

The impressive ‘Back O’Bourke’ centre showcases the early days of Bourke and beyond. Discover the ‘Outback’ life of Henry Lawson, the search for an inland sea. Marvel at the stories of the ‘women of the west’ including Nancy Bird Walton, who flew an air ambulance here in the 1930’s. Stop by the 110 year old Morrall’s bakery for a pie or pastry, follow the Heritage Trail through town, or visit the grave of Fred Hollows. Cruise along the Darling on the Jandra, an historic paddle boat to recall the river boat history. In recent years Bourke has undergone a remarkable revitalisation and is now a shining light in positive indigenous opportunities. Take a cultural walk to learn about the history of Aboriginal people in Bourke and the personal connection formed with the land and it’s richness. Now to Gundabooka National Park which surrounds Mt Gundabooka and has unique Aboriginal Rock art to explore, including a pleasant and easy walk through this isolated National Park.Overnight Bourke. Day 5 — Darling River Run to White Cliffs

From here to the Darling River Run to Wilcannia, once a bustling port for the wool-laden paddle steamers, now with its beautiful and historic sandstone public architecture. Follow the Darling River Run down stream via river towns of Louth & Tilpa - with a cuppa and tour at the famous Dunlop Station if operating. Dunlop Station is an historic sheep station property located on the Darling River. Once a million acres it has a 45 stand shearing shed which was the first shed to have mechanical shears. with the check out the paddle boat and big wool and sheep station history of this region. Travel to White Cliffs and explore the opal mines history, and maybe find some local opal bargains. overnight White Cliffs. BLD

Day 6 -  White Cliffs, Burke & Wills camp, Kinchega National Park, Mungo National Park, Wilcannia, Menindee Lakes

Explore White Cliffs opal fields and maybe pick up a few bargains from the numerous opal dealers in town. We then head for Wilcannia and Menindee Lakes via the 2nd leg of the Darling River Run to Menindee. Explore the memorial to Burke & Wills camp on the lakeshore and a haven for wetland birds. We visit the picturesque lakes and the grand and restored Kinchega  Woolshed in Kinchega National Park with beautiful sweeping river bends. We follow the river further south to Pooncarie and Mungo National Park. Optional Sunset tour overlooking the Mungo lunar landscape Overnight Mungo Lodge, Mungo National Park. Meals: BLD

Day 7 - Mungo National Park, Broken Hill 

Explore Mungo National Park including the Walls of China and this ancient lakebed that was home to megafauna of the area. We travel the Mungo circuit to explore the ancient Willandra Lakes and the historic sheep station and large and impressive shearing shed that served the area for around 100 years. Day 10 - Travel through NSW heartlands on the Great Western Highway via Dubbo "the Hub of the West ", scenic Orange, and historic Bathurst. We take the scenic route via via Lithgow, and Victoria Pass before arrival back in Sydney around 6 pm

ITINERARY DETAILS

Day 1 – Depart from Sydney – travelling via the famous “Dog on the Tucker Box” over the Great Dividing Range to Wagga Wagga, and on to Hay on the edge of the Murrumbidgee River, and in the Heart of the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area. Learn about Australia’s food bowl, the Murray-Darling Basin. Enjoy a hearty local meal and overnight in a counrty motel. LD

Day 2 – Visit the Shearers Hall of Fame in Hay and learn of the rich life in the wool industry in early NSW. We travel the western plains then follow the Murray River to its junction with the Darling River at Wentworth. Optional wine tasting at Trentham Estate, a family-owned winery on the banks of the Murray River. Enjoy an afternoon wine tasting by the river before we head to Wentworth. In the late 1800’s Wentworth was the largest river port in Australia with over 400 boats plying the Murray and the Darling Rivers. Overnight Wentworth Meals: BL

Day 3 –  Enjoy a peaceful nature walk between the confluence of the rivers, admiring the ancient River Red Gums and many water birds of this area.  Visit the junction of the Murray and Darling Rivers, Australia’s biggest river system and also visit Wentworth Pioneer Museum with life-size megafauna replicas from the local area including the cuddly 2-metre high Diprotodons. After lunch we leave the river area and head for Overnight at Mungo Lodge in Mungo National Park  B,L,D

Day 4 - Explore Mungo National Park, a World Heritage listed site thanks to Mungo Man man & woman being discovered here, after their 60,000 year old ritual burial. Explore the walls of China, and more history including National Parks display, and the restored woolshed. Next we meet the Darling River at Pooncarie and follow the river to Menindee, Menindee Lakes, and Burke and Wills campsite on the banks of the river. Arrive in Broken Hill for overnight.  Enjoy viewing Mario's famous artworks and a well deserved dinner at the famous Palace Hotel from Priscilla Queen of the Desert fame. Day 5 - From Broken Hill, we visit Silverton, where films including Mad Max, and Mission Impossible were made. We visit the Living Desert sculptures, Pro Harts Gallery, the Railway & Historical Museum and Miners Memorial on top of the Broken Hill Line of Lode where the mine was located. Alternatively, you may wish to take an Aboriginal guided tour to Mootwingee National Park (extra cost) Overnight Broken Hill Desert Sands Motel or similarB.L.D

Day 6 - Depart Broken Hill through the Barrier Range on the Silver City Highway via Packsaddle for Milparinka and Depot Glen, where explorer Charles Sturt spent 6 months in 1845 with a team of men, waiting for rain or cooler conditions. This area has been extensively mined for tin, lead and gold and operated large sheep stations. Appreciate this once thriving gold mining town at the restored Milparinka Heritage Precinct. Time to explore Tibooburra, and the Outdoor Pastoral Museum.  Flat-topped mesas and fantastic views characterise the central Jump-Up country. Day 7 - Today we are heading into the Sturt Desert & Sturt National park, crossing the Grey Range with a stop at Fort Grey. The park protects an enormous arid landscape of space and solitude. The rolling red-sand dunes of the Strzelecki desert ripple through the western section, graduating past surprising wetlands surrounded by white sands. After some great opportunities for photos, we pass through the Dog Fence and arrive at Cameron Corner on the 3 states corner (NSW, SA & QLD) for a thirst quencher and souvenirs, and check out the "Corner Store". It is said by the local Queensland residents that the flies come in from NSW, and the dust from South Australia. We travel via Bollards Lagoon, the Yellow Bus site (now buried) and Merty Merty station, crossing the sand hills of the Strzelecki Desert, and Creek as we head for the Strzelecki Track and the uncanny Moomba oil & gas fields. We pass the location of the geothermal power plant / hot rocks project of Geodynamics where Australia has the hottest rocks on Earth, outside of volcanic areas.

Geologists think that 10 million years ago, the granites in the Cooper Basin, South Australia, were exposed at the surface. Since that time they have been covered by a sedimentary layer, four kilometres thick, that acts as an overlying blanket; trapping the heat and preventing it from escaping to the atmosphere.

The heat is created by naturally occurring radiogenic decay that heats the granite to more than 250 degrees Celsius. The granite temperatures in Europe are only 180 degrees Celsius. The granite belt in the Cooper Basin is fractured in horizontal layers and these fractures naturally contain water at very high pressures – up to 5, 000 pounds per square inch. Check out the birdlife at sunset on the flooding Cooper Creek before a delicious meal at the Innamincka Hotel, adjacent the famous old Mission station, restored as National Parks offices. Day 8 - A chance for an early walk and look at creekside birdlife - the old hospital building (now museum & NP office) and quirky Innamincka - before we head for the S/ QLD border and Nappa Merrie Station (was owned by S Kidman & Co, now Gina Reinhart) to the Burke & Wills Dig Tree. Here Burke & Wills support team lead by Brahe had waited 4 months and 4 days (a month longer than agreed) and had buried provisions for the possibility of the returning northern explorers. The support team left only a few hours before Burke & Wills return, and the supplies were possibly not found, contributing to their demise. Lots of history, and birdlife here on the infamous Cooper Creek. There's time for a cruise on Cooper Creek, and providing the access route is open, we can visit Coongie Lakes, a haven for bird life in the region. Overnight Innaminka Hotel 2 nights.

Day 9 - Travel via Moomba and remote Walkers Crossing through the Stony Desert to the Birdsville Track and Mungerannie Hotel, site of their popular Artesian bore fed wetlands. Overnight Mungerannie Hotel - cabin accommodation with shared bathrooms BLD

Day 10 - Today we visit Cowarie Station on the Warburton River, the major inflow to lake Eyre from the Diamantina River and Goyder Lagoon before a visit to  Kalamurina Wildlife Sanctuary operated by Australian Wildlife Conservancy.  Here we learn of the important local and widespread work of AWC with its over 24 sanctuary properties in unique and diverse Australian landscapes. We later travel north on the Birdsville Track to cross the Queensland border and overnight in Birdsville, at the Birdsville Pub BLD

Day 11 - Today we will travel through the sandhills to visit and climb Big Red, the Simpson Desert’s biggest sandhill. We do a Birdsville tour with its fascinating history, visit Burke & Wills marked tree by the Diamantina River, and site of Australias most famous thermal power station. After lunch, we depart and travel due north through Channel Country and the Diamantina Shire HQ at Bedourie, crossing several creeks and water holes often hosting wetland birds including Brolgas. Arrive Boulia for overnight at Australia Hotel or Boulia Desert Sands Motel. BLD

Day 12 - The Min Min Encounter is a theatre presentions at the visitors centre, where we learn of the fascinating story of the Min Min lights phenomena -  a mystery of strange red lights appearing and following people in this remote desert region. We depart after the exhibition and town tour for Tobermorey via the Plenty Highway and the northern boundary of the Simpson Desert. The Tobermorey camping area which is set on the Tobermorey Station is a lovely grassed area under trees. It has hot showers, flushing toilets and a shop with some basic goods. We can enjoy an open campfire under the stars tonight. Accommodation is available here in basic cabins with ensuite shared bathrooms for early bookers. Alternatively or camping option. as we overnight at Tobermorey Station in basic cabin accommodation. BLD

Day 13 - Our journey onward takes us via Jervois, which is our last fuel stop. Jervois is a cattle station, formed in 1960, and one of the last stations to be taken up in the area. We pass by giant termite nests and nearby the rugged Harts Range. Enjoy a stop at the remote Atitjere community Aboriginal Arts centre, nestled at the base of the Harts Ranges, Atitjere is home to around 400 people. Time permitting, a stopover at Gemtree and check out the gems, crystals and mineral specimens as well as local Aboriginal Art and artefacts at this popular gem fossicking region. Arrive Alice Springs for overnight and a celebratory meal together. BLD

Day 14 - After a tasty breakfast tour completes at 10 am. Itinerary

Day 1 – Depart Sydney for the Blue Mountains with morning tea at stunning views from Govetts Leap over the Grose Valley. Moving on via Lithgow to Bathurst and the fascinating history of the gold rush and Cobb & Co coaches. We travel via Orange to near Parkes to visit The Dish Exhibition Centre at the giant CSIRO operated radiotelescope that brought the 1st moon landing images to Earth. Back in Parkes, and less famous is the King's Castle, Australia's very own Elvis Presley museum created by the original yellow Wiggle Greg Page.

Heading west we travel beside the Indian Pacific railway route and visit Manildra, Bogan Gate and Condobolin, in extensive Murray Darling Basin wheat, grain, sheep, and cattle producing areas with a taste of the far west of NSW. Arrive for overnight at Lake Cargellico.

Day 2 - We depart for Hillston, once an important stop for the stage coaches of Cobb and Co. then on via Ivanhoe on the Cobb Highway, part of the Kidman Way. Arriving in Menindee we visit Kinchega National Park, to view the birdlife of Menindee Lakes then to nearby Burke and Wills camp on the banks of the Darling River. It's now a short hop to Broken Hill for dinner at the famous & delicious Mario’s Palace Hotel (full of the original murals from Priscilla Queen of the Desert fame) Overnight Broken Hill.

Explore Broken Hill highlights options include The Line of Lode Lookout, and Miners Memorial plus Desert Sculptures or Lake Mungo or Mutawintji National Parks (optional extra day tour) for exceptional rock art rich in Aboriginal history. Please ask if wanting this option.

Day 3 – From Broken Hill we cross the NSW / SA border travelling through saltbush country, via remote outback towns of Yunta, Oodla Wirra, Cradock, and Orrooroo, and the 3 gauge steam railway town of Peterborough. From Hawker, we skirt Wilpena Pound, and the awesome mountain scenery of the  Heyson Range & Flinders Ranges. We cross the Goyder Line, view the Elder & Heyson Ranges, Wilpena Pound & Lake Torrens and visit the historic and award-winning Prairie Hotel at Parachilna with great outback art before arrival at our cosy overnight stop at Leigh Creek or Marree on some tours.  L, D

Day 4 – At Marree we check out the ancient mosque, Old Ghan railway history and Lake Eyre Yacht Club. From Marree we follow the Old Ghan Railway Line and Oodnadatta Track to William Creek. From here we can take an optional 1 or 2 hour (or longer options) scenic flight over Lake Eyre. (Optional extensions at extra cost). We visit the shores of Lake Eyre South and unique Mound Springs, which are permanent water flows from the Great Artesian Basin.

We connect with the wonder of the bird and plant life revitalized by recent flooding rains. Day 1 —- SYDNEY, MUDGEE GULGONG, COONABARABRAN

Depart Sydney via Bells Line of Road, via Mt Tomah with spectacular views of the Grose Valley, and look at the Zig Zag Railway at Clarence. From Lithgow we are now a short drive to Mudgee where we'll taste some local wines and have lunch in a vineyard. BL

Check out Poets Corner, on the way to Gulgong - the town that was on the $10 note. This small village from the gold rush days is a delight to take in the regional history and historic buildings. We travel via Dunedoo, known for its poetry, hospitality, and name, then check out the murals of Mendooran before overnight Coonabarabran LD

Day 2 — Warrumbungle Bushwalk, Macquarie Marshes,

The Warrumbungles are calling and we take an approximate 1 hour walk with views of the spectacular breadknife from Camp Blackman. Burbie Canyon walking track is a gentle 2km stroll through a sandstone gorge and is particularly popular for birdwatching. On return we have a tour of Siding Springs Observatory, home to Australia’s largest optical telescope.

Heading west now via silo art in Coonamble then to Macquarie Marshes a UNESCO registered site of outstanding value as one of the most important wetland areas in the world. It is one of the most crucial breeding sites for waterbirds in Australia, with 77 species, along with over 150 other birds, as well as fish, turtles, frogs, snakes and mammals. Travel on via Walgett, and visit the local museum with its wool industry heritage, then to Lightning Ridge for an afternoon experience of the Chambers of the Black Hand Opal Mine Art Carving Tour and a tour of the region and opal traders in this fascinating outback town. Day 3 - Lightning Ridge, Brewarrina fish traps, Bourke

Discover more of Lightning Ridge, check out the opal dealers and famous bore baths. We head for Brewarrina on the Barwon River, and the 40,000-year-old Aboriginal Fish Traps - still working. The Brewarrina fish traps are one of the oldest man-made structures on earth. This elaborate network of rock weirs and pools stretches for around half a kilometre along the riverbed and was built by ancient tribes, to catch fish as they swam upstream. Overnight Bourke. Day 4— BOURKE, Cruise on The Darling On The Jandra paddleboat, Gundabooka National Park

The impressive ‘Back O’Bourke’ centre showcases the early days of Bourke and beyond. Discover the ‘Outback’ life of Henry Lawson, the search for an inland sea. Marvel at the stories of the ‘women of the west’ including Nancy Bird Walton, who flew an air ambulance here in the 1930’s. Stop by the 110 year old Morrall’s bakery for a pie or pastry, follow the Heritage Trail through town, or visit the grave of Fred Hollows. Cruise along the Darling on the Jandra, an historic paddle boat to recall the river boat history. In recent years Bourke has undergone a remarkable revitalisation and is now a shining light in positive indigenous opportunities. Take a cultural walk to learn about the history of Aboriginal people in Bourke and the personal connection formed with the land and it’s richness. Now to Gundabooka National Park which surrounds Mt Gundabooka and has unique Aboriginal Rock art to explore, including a pleasant and easy walk through this isolated National Park.Overnight Bourke. Day 5 — Darling River Run to White Cliffs

From here to the Darling River Run to Wilcannia, once a bustling port for the wool-laden paddle steamers, now with its beautiful and historic sandstone public architecture. Follow the Darling River Run down stream via river towns of Louth & Tilpa - with a cuppa and tour at the famous Dunlop Station if operating. Dunlop Station is an historic sheep station property located on the Darling River. Once a million acres it has a 45 stand shearing shed which was the first shed to have mechanical shears. with the check out the paddle boat and big wool and sheep station history of this region. We then head for Wilcannia and Menindee Lakes via the 2nd leg of the Darling River Run to Menindee. Explore the memorial to Burke & Wills camp on the lakeshore and a haven for wetland birds. We visit the picturesque lakes and the grand and restored Kinchega  Woolshed in Kinchega National Park with beautiful sweeping river bends. Day 7 - Mungo National Park, Broken Hill 

Explore Mungo National Park including the Walls of China and this ancient lakebed that was home to megafauna of the area. We travel the Mungo circuit to explore the ancient Willandra Lakes and the historic sheep station and large and impressive shearing shed that served the area for around 100 years. Day 3 - Depart Broken Hill through the Barrier Range on the Silver City Highway via Packsaddle for Milparinka and Depot Glen, where explorer Charles Sturt spent 6 months in 1845 with a team of men, waiting for rain and cooler conditions. This area has been extensively mined for tin, lead and gold and operated large sheep stations. Appreciate this once thriving gold mining town at the restored Milparinka Heritage Precinct.

After refuelling at Tibooburra, we are heading into the Sturt Desert & Sturt National Park, towards Cameron Corner,  crossing the Grey Range with a stop at Fort Grey. The park protects an enormous arid landscape of space and solitude. The rolling red sand dunes of the Strzelecki desert ripple through the western section, graduating past surprising wetlands surrounded by white sands. After some great opportunities for photos, we pass through the Dog Fence and arrive at Cameron Corner on the 3 states corner (NSW, SA & QLD) for a thirst quencher and souvenirs, and check out the "Corner Store".  We return this evening to check out the Tibooburra pubs and considerable town and mining history before overnight here at Family Hotel or Granites Motel  Meals BLD

Day 4 - Time to explore Tibooburra, and the Outdoor Pastoral Museum.  Flat-topped mesas and fantastic views characterise the central Jump-Up country. Remnant gidgee woodland, the catchment system of the ephemeral Twelve-Mile Creek and gibber and grass-covered plains dominate the east, while 450 million-year-old granite tors surrounding Tibooburra form part of the southern boundary of the park.

Travel to White Cliffs and explore the opal mines history, and maybe find some local opal bargains. Then to our overnight accommodation in the Underground Motel- Meals BLD

This elaborate network of rock weirs and pools stretches for around half a kilometre along the riverbed and was built by ancient tribes, to catch fish as they swam upstream. Heading south to Macquarie Marshes a UNESCO registered site of outstanding value as one of the most important wetland areas in the world. It is one of the most crucial breeding sites for waterbirds in Australia, with 77 species, along with over 150 other birds, as well as fish, turtles, frogs, snakes and mammals. We travel on to our final art silo in Coonamble then take the scenic road to the beautiful Warrumbungles for a delightful bush walk with wonderful views of The Breadknife. We have a tour of Siding Springs Observatory, home to Australia’s largest telescope. The Warrumbungles is Australia’s only Dark Sky Park, meaning it is our only Internationally recognised park with an exceptional quality of starry nights and an environment specifically protected for its scientific, natural, educational, cultural heritage, and public enjoyment. Day 8 - GULGONG, MUDGEE, PARKES 

Drive through Dunedoo, known for its poetry, hospitality, and name (meaning black swan), on the way to Gulgong - the town that was on the way to Gulgong - the town that was on the $10 note. This small village from the gold rush days is a delight to take in the regional history and historic buildings. We are now a short drive to Mudgee where we’ll taste some local wines and have lunch in a vineyard.Now we visit the Portland silos at the old Cement Factory – beautiful artwork there on the cement works and symbolic of the restoration of the community in Portland exemplified by their site work and the wonderful annual art exhibition.

Moving on via Bathurst and the fascinating history of the gold rush and Cobb & Co coaches, then The Dish Exhibition centre at the giant CSIRO operated radiotelescope that brought the 1st moon landing images to Earth. Back in Parkes, and less famous is the King's Castle, Australia's very own Elvis Presley museum created by the original yellow Wiggle Greg Page. Overnight Parkes Meals: BLD

Day 9 – We visit  Canowindra, ballooning capital of Australia and the Museum of Fishes – viewing ancient fish fossils from this area that was once an inland sea. Then Cowra (and railway roundhouse for the keen). Onwards we travel via Weddin Mountains National Park, visiting the popular Grenfell Wheat silos completed in 2019 and then through West Wyalong to the well-known Weethalle Silos. Driving West via Rankin Springs the country spreads and the sky seems to get bigger we know the perfect place to see our first Big Sky sunset with the full spectrum of colours as the sun sets over the Hay Plains. Day 10 – SHEAR OUTBACK, WENTWORTH

Hay was one of Australia’s major wool growing areas, and a visit to the Shear Outback centre takes to you into the rich life in the wool industry in early NSW. We’ll take the backroad through seemingly endless saltbush plains, that are home to over 50 farming families. Tiny villages are the social hub for many of the large outback stations, where life can often be lonely. Follow the Murray River to Trentham Estate, a family-owned winery on the banks of the Murray River. Enjoy an afternoon wine tasting by the river before we head to Wentworth. In the late 1800’s Wentworth was the largest river port in Australia with over 400 boats plying the Murray and the Darling Rivers, which meet here. Overnight Wentworth Meals: BL

Day 11 – Wentworth visit the junction of the Murray and Darling Rivers, Australia’s biggest river system and also visit Wentworth Pioneer Museum with life-size megafauna replicas from the local area including the cuddly 2-metre high Diprotodons. Day 3 – From Broken Hill we cross the NSW / SA border travelling through saltbush country, via remote outback towns of Yunta, Oodla Wirra, Cradock, and Orrooroo, and the 3 gauge steam railway town of Peterborough. From Hawker, we skirt Wilpena Pound, and the awesome mountain scenery of the  Heyson Range & Flinders Ranges. We cross the Goyder Line, view the Elder & Heyson Ranges, Wilpena Pound & Lake Torrens and visit the historic and award-winning Prairie Hotel at Parachilna with great outback art before arrival at our cosy overnight stop at Leigh Creek or Marree on some tours.  B, L, D

Day 4 – At Marree we check out the ancient mosque, Old Ghan railway history and Lake Eyre Yacht Club. From Marree we follow the Old Ghan Railway Line and Oodnadatta Track to William Creek. From here we can take an optional 1 hour scenic flight over Lake Eyre. (Optional extensions at extra cost). We visit the shores of Lake Eyre South and unique Mound Springs, which are permanent water flows from the Great Artesian Basin. We connect with the wonder of the bird and plant life revitalized by recent flooding rains. Day 5 - Depart Broken Hill through to White Cliffs and explore the opal mines history, and maybe find some local opal bargains. Now to the Darling River Run via Wilcannia, once a bustling port for the wool laden paddle steamers, now with its beautiful and historic sandstone public architecture. On up the Darling River Run to river towns of Louth & Tilpa - with a cuppa and tour at the famous Dunlop Station (locals willing). Dunlop Station is an historic sheep station property located on the Darling River. Once a million acres it has a 45 stand shearing shed which was the first shed to have mechanical shears. Check out the paddle boat and big wool and sheep station history of this region. following the Darling, we visit the historic towns of Tipla and Louth before Gundabooka National Park. The park surrounds Mt Gundabooka and has unique Aboriginal Rock art to explore, including a pleasant and easy walk through this isolated National Park. Back on the main track, we head for Overnight in Bourke BLD

Day 6 - Bourke

The impressive ‘Back O’Bourke’ centre showcases the early days of Bourke and beyond. Discover the Outback life of Henry Lawson, and the search for an inland sea. Marvel at the stories of the ‘women of the west’ including Nancy Bird Walton, who flew an air ambulance here in the 1930’s. Stop by the 110 year old Morrall’s bakery for a pie or pastry, follow the Heritage Trail through town, or visit the grave of Fred Hollows. Cruise along the Darling on the Jandra, a historic paddleboat to recall the river boat history. In recent years Bourke has undergone a remarkable revitalisation and is now a shining light in the remote west of NSW. Take a cultural walk to learn about the history of Aboriginal people in Bourke and the personal connection formed with the land and it’s richness. Tonight we’ll join a campfire dinner under a coolabah tree, (if available) under a starlit sky, with plenty of music, poetry, and storytelling all about outback of Australia. Overnight Bourke. Drive through Coolah, one of several towns to claim bragging rights as the home of the legendary Black Stump. It was here that the colloquial saying ‘Beyond the Black Stump’, meaning ‘beyond the limits of civilisation,’ is said to have originated.

On the way to Denman, we pass through Cassilis and Merriwa, passing Collaroy, a once-grand sheep station of this productive area,. Merriwa has more silo art, then on via spectacular rock formations, Sandy Hollow and the winding Goulburn River to Denman, the Hunter Valley and return to Sydney by approx 7 pm (delivered to your door if pre-arranged)

Day 1 - Depart Broken Hill (or Adelaide day prior) through the Barrier Ranges on the Silver City Highway via Packsaddle for Milparinka and the Albert Hotel. Appreciate this once thriving gold mining town at the restored Milparinka Heritage Precinct. We check out the Tibooburra pub and considerable town before heading into the Sturt Desert & crossing the Grey Range with a stop at Fort Grey. The park protects an enormous arid landscape of space and solitude. The rolling red-sand dunes of the Strzelecki desert ripple through the western section, graduating past surprising wetlands surrounded by white sands. After some great opportunities for photos, and to explore we arrive at Cameron Corner on the 3 states corner (NSW, SA & QLD) for a tasty meal and overnight at the "Corner Store".

Day 2 - Travel via Bollards Lagoon, the Yellow Bus site (now buried) and Merty Merty station, crossing the sand hills of the Strzelecki Desert, and Creek as we head for the Strzelecki Track and the uncanny Moomba oil & gas fields. We pass the site of the geothermal power plant / hot rocks project of Geodynamics where Australia has the hottest rocks on Earth, outside of volcanic areas. Arriving in Innaminka, check out the birdlife at sunset on the Cooper Creek before a delicious meal at the Innamincka Hotel Overnight Innaminka.

Hot Rocks - Geologists think that 10 million years ago, the granites in the Cooper Basin, South Australia, were exposed at the surface. Since that time they have been covered by a sedimentary layer, four kilometres thick, that acts as an overlying blanket; trapping the heat and preventing it from escaping to the atmosphere.

The heat is created by naturally occurring radiogenic decay that heats the granite to more than 250 degrees Celsius. The granite temperatures in Europe are only 180 degrees Celsius. The granite belt in the Cooper Basin is fractured in horizontal layers and these fractures naturally contain water at very high pressures – up to 5, 000 pounds per square inch.

Day 3 -  In 1928 the Australian Inland Mission (a part of the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia) built a hospital at Innaminka, the Elizabeth Symon Nursing Home. Known as the Mission hospital, it was restored with funding from by Dick Smith and Australian Geographic, and now serves as a museum and National Parks office. A fascinating historical record here.

Today we explore more of the Cooper Creek region and Coongie Lakes, (conditional on road being open) a unique wetlands area in the desert sandhills approximately 100 km from Innaminka, attracting birdlife from afar. A rare chance to visit this remote and surrounding area

Malkumba-Coongie Lakes National Park is one of the most spectacular of South Australia's natural attractions. The park is a pristine water world made up of channels, waterholes, lakes, internal deltas, shallow floodplains and interdune corridors and swamps. Motorboats, camp fires, fishing and generators are not permitted in the park, ensuring a genuine wilderness experience.

Coongie Lakes is listed as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance. The waterbird diversity is high for an arid wetland and is a significant feeding, resting and breeding site for an enormous number of birds that migrate to the area. The wetland plays host to a diversity of wildlife including fish, reptiles and frogs. It transforms into a breeding ground for an enormous number of migratory birds from around the world. The contrast from sand dunes to vast wetlands is remarkable. The park is a true wilderness for visitors seeking a place of solitude to enjoy nature. Take advantage of the wilderness – camp, canoe, enjoy photography, bushwalk, discover the Aboriginal history and generally relax in the calm surrounds of the wetlands. Overnight Innaminka.

Day 4 - For the early birds take a stroll to the nearby Coopers Creek look at creek side birdlife usually brimming with life.  - and quirky Innamincka - before we head for the SA/ QLD border and Nappa Merrie Station (previously owned by S Kidman & Co) to the Burke & Wills Dig Tree. Here, Burke & Wills, their support team waited 3 months and provisions were buried for the northern explorers. The support left 1 day before Burke & Wills return, and the supplies were not found leading to their demise. Lots of history, and birdlife here on the infamous Cooper Creek. Heading south we travel through picturesque desert then into sand hill country via Orientos, Santos and Sullivans Tank before crossing the border into NSW at the Warri Gate on the Dingo fence, and once again into the Sturt Desert. Taking in vast stony plains, the towering red-sand hills of the great Strzelecki Desert and the unusual flat-topped mesas around the Olive Downs, this park covers 340,000 hectares of classic outback terrain. Thanks to the protection of the dingo-proof fence, there are large populations of western grey and red kangaroos. We arrive Tibooburra for dinner & overnight at the local hotel in this most remote NSW desert town.

Day 5 - Time to explore Tibooburra, and the Outdoor Pastoral Museum.  Flat-topped mesas and fantastic views characterise the central Jump-Up country. Remnant gidgee woodland, the catchment system of the ephemeral Twelve-Mile Creek and gibber and grass-covered plains dominate the east, while 450 million year old granite tors surrounding Tibooburra form part of the southern boundary of the park. We leave town and head for Pooles Grave & Depot Glen where in 1845 Charles Sturt's men were stranded and lay camp.

Travelling south we head to White Cliffs and to our overnight accommodation at the Underground Motel. Stargazing is a highlight here in the extreme dark sky on the motel roof..BLD

Day 6 - We take a tour of the White Cliffs opal fields that explores the opal mines history. Opportunities for some local opal bargains. Next we travel to Wilcannia on the Darling River. We take a town tour to view the many grand and historic buildings from Wilcannia's hey days as a major river port for the wool, mining and timber industries. Enjoy lunch by the river side before we head back to Broken Hill arriving late afternoon with many a tale to share. BL

Itinerary

Day 1 – Depart Sydney for the Blue Mountains with morning tea at stunning views from Govetts Leap over the Grose Valley. Moving on via Lithgow to Bathurst and the fascinating history of the gold rush and Cobb & Co coaches. We travel via Orange to near Parkes to visit The Dish Exhibition Centre at the giant CSIRO operated radiotelescope that brought the 1st moon landing images to Earth. Back in Parkes, and less famous is the King's Castle, Australia's very own Elvis Presley museum created by the original yellow Wiggle Greg Page.

Heading west we travel beside the Indian Pacific railway route and visit Manildra, Bogan Gate and Condobolin, in extensive Murray Darling Basin wheat, grain, sheep and cattle producing areas with a taste of the far west of NSW. Arrive for overnight at Lake Cargellico.

Day 2 - We depart for Hillston, once an important stop for the stagecoaches of Cobb and Co. then on via Ivanhoe on the Cobb Highway, part of the Kidman Way. Arriving in Menindee we visit Kinchega National Park, to view the birdlife of Menindee Lakes then to nearby Burke and Wills camp on the banks of the Darling River. It's now a short hop to Broken Hill for dinner at the famous & delicious Mario’s Palace Hotel (full of the original murals from Priscilla Queen of the Desert fame) Overnight Broken Hill.

Day 3 – Explore Broken Hill highlights (your choice) options include Pro Hart Gallery, The Line of Lode Lookout, a mine tour, and Miners Memorial plus Desert Sculptures or Lake Mungo or Mutawintji National Parks (optional extra day tour) for exceptional rock art rich in Aboriginal history. quirky Innamincka - before we visit Burke's Grave site.   We drive approximaley 70km further upstream via the SA/ QLD border and Nappa Merrie Station (once owned by S Kidman & Co) to the Burke & Wills Dig Tree. Here
Burke & Wills support team waited 3 months and provisions
were buried for the northern explorers. The support left only hours before
Burke & Wills return, who were so weak they chose not to pursue. Lots of history, and birdlife here on the infamous Cooper Creek.
After a reflective look around here, we head south and we travel through picturesque desert then sand hill
country via Orientos, Santos and Sullivans Tank before crossing the
border into NSW at the Warri Gate on the Dingo fence, and once again into the Sturt Desert. Taking in vast stony plains, the towering red-sand hills of the great Strzelecki Desert and the unusual flat-topped mesas around the Olive Downs,
this park covers 340,000 hectares of classic outback terrain. Thanks to
the protection of the dingo-proof fence, there are large populations of
western grey and red kangaroos. We arrive Tibooburra for dinner & overnight at the local hotel in this most remote NSW desert town.

Heading east we visit the Aboriginal rock art site of Mt Grenfell, before Cobar where we check out the mining museum, before overnight in the historic flood town of Nyngan, close to Macquarie Marshes.

Day 8 - A short drive for the wetlands for the birdwatchers at Macquarie Marshes a UNESCO & Ramsar registered site of outstanding value as one of the most important wetland areas in the world. It is one of the most crucial breeding sites for waterbirds in Australia, with 77 species, along with over 150 other birds, as well as fish, turtles, frogs, snakes and mammals. After a good look at different locations of the wetlands, and a tasty lunch we travel on to a spectacular silo art site in Coonamble then take the scenic road to the beautiful Warrumbungles for a delightful bush walk with wonderful views of The Breadknife. We have a tour of Siding Springs Observatory, home to Australia’s largest optical telescope.

After some refreshments at the "Corner Store" we travel via Bollards Lagoon, the Yellow Bus and Merty Merty station, crossing the sand hills of the Strzelecki Desert, and Strzelecki Creek as we head up the Strzelecki Track through the uncanny Moomba oil & gas fields. After a reflective look around here, we head for Eromanga and the Eromanga Natural History Museum where nearby Australia’s largest dinosaur was carefully excavated from the dirt and a raft of other dinosaurs followed, all species that had never been seen before. The discoveries made southwest Queensland the country’s newest palaeontology frontier. We take a museum tour and meet the discovered remains of dinosaurs "Cooper" and "Zac" and many other species. Day 7 -  Today our destination is Bourke, back in NSW via Thargomindah, Lake Bindegolly National Park which conserves one of the most important wetland systems in south-west Queensland and is often home to prolific birdlife. Then on via Yowah and Eulo with unique Boulder opals. Cunnamulla is next where we learn of the Cunnamulla Fella (a song of a drover written by Slim Dusty) We cross the border to NSW and follow the Warrego River south for our overnight and dinner in Bourke.

Day 8 - In Bourke we take a cruise along the Darling River on the Jandra, a rebuilt historic paddleboat to recall the river boat history. In recent years Bourke has undergone a remarkable revitalisation and is now a shining light in the remote west of NSW. The impressive ‘Back O’Bourke’ centre showcases the early days of Bourke and beyond. Discover the Outback life of Henry Lawson, and the search for an inland sea. Hear the stories of the ‘women of the west’ including Nancy Bird Walton, who flew an air ambulance here in the 1930’s. Stop by the 110 year old Morrall’s bakery for a pie or pastry, follow the Heritage Trail through town, or visit the grave of Fred Hollows.  Overnight Bourke.

Day 9 - We head for Brewarrina on the Barwon River, and the 40,000-year-old Aboriginal Fish Traps - still working. The Brewarrina fish traps are one of the oldest man-made structures on earth. This elaborate network of rock weirs and pools stretches for around half a kilometre along the riverbed and was built by ancient tribes, to catch fish as they swam upstream. Heading south to Macquarie Marshes a UNESCO registered site of outstanding value as one of the most important wetland areas in the world. It is one of the most crucial breeding sites for waterbirds in Australia, with 77 species, along with over 150 other birds, as well as fish, turtles, frogs, snakes and mammals. We travel on via silo art in Coonamble then take the scenic road to the beautiful Warrumbungles for a delightful bush walk with wonderful views of The Breadknife.

The Warrumbungles is Australia’s only Dark Sky Park, meaning it is our only Internationally recognised park with an exceptional quality of starry nights and an environment specifically protected for its scientific, natural, educational, cultural heritage, and public enjoyment. Day 10 - In Coonabarabran  view the Diprotodon fossil remains discovered at nearby Tambar Springs. Back in the 'bungles take a tour of Siding Springs Observatory, home to Australia’s largest optical telescope. Since opening in 1964, The Australian National University has operated the observatory site hosting research telescopes from the ANU's Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics (RSAA), Las Cumbres Observatory (LCO) and many other institutions from around the world. Research is varied, from probing the depths of the cosmos in search of "Dark Energy" to searching the Milky Way for other planets and signs of life. We tour inside the dome of the largest telescope and learn of its workings plus visist the adjacent astronomy exhibition centre.

We depart the region mid morning and drive through Dunedoo, known for its poetry, hospitality, and name, or alternatively via Coolah, one of several towns to claim bragging rights as the home of the legendary Black Stump. It was here that the colloquial saying ‘Beyond the Black Stump’, meaning ‘beyond the limits of civilisation,’ is said to have originated.

On the way to Gulgong - the town that was on the way to Gulgong - the town that was on the $10 note. This small village from the gold rush days is a delight to take in the regional history and historic buildings. We are now a short drive to Mudgee where we’ll taste some local wines and have lunch in a vineyard. Travel via Lithgow and the Zig Zag railway and back to Sydney via spectacular Grose Valley views and Mt Tomah on Bells Line fo Road to Sydney and tour completion.

Itinerary -

Day 1 – Depart Sydney for the Blue Mountains with morning tea at stunning views from Govetts Leap over the Grose Valley. Moving on via Lithgow to Bathurst and the fascinating history of the gold rush and Cobb & Co coaches. We travel via Orange to near Parkes to visit The Dish Exhibition Centre at the giant CSIRO operated radiotelescope that brought the 1st moon landing images to Earth. Back in Parkes, and less famous is the King's Castle, Australia's very own Elvis Presley museum created by the original yellow Wiggle Greg Page.

Heading west we travel beside the Indian Pacific railway route and visit Manildra, Bogan Gate and Condobolin, in extensive Murray Darling Basin wheat, grain, sheep and cattle producing areas with a taste of the far west of NSW. Arrive for overnight at Lake Cargelligo.

Day 2 - We depart for Hillston, once an important stop for the stagecoaches of Cobb and Co. then on via Ivanhoe on the Cobb Highway, part of the Kidman Way. Arriving in Menindee we visit Kinchega National Park, to view the birdlife of Menindee Lakes then to nearby Burke and Wills camp on the banks of the Darling River. It's now a short hop to Broken Hill for dinner at the famous & delicious Mario’s Palace Hotel (full of the original murals from Priscilla Queen of the Desert fame) Overnight Broken Hill.

Day 3 – Explore Broken Hill highlights (your choice) options include Pro Hart Gallery, The Line of Lode Lookout, a mine tour, and Miners Memorial plus Desert Sculptures or Lake Mungo or Mutawintji National Parks (optional extra day tour) for exceptional rock art rich in Aboriginal history.

Day 4  -  Depart Broken Hill through the Barrier Range on the Silver City Highway via Packsaddle for Milparinka Appreciate this once thriving gold mining town at the restored Milparinka Heritage Precinct withh impressive new displays of early life and Sturts expedition. This area has been extensively mined for tin, lead and gold and operated large sheep stations. 

We can also visit Poole's Grave and Depot Glen, where explorer Charles Sturt spent 6 months in 1845 with a team of men, waiting for rain and cooler conditions. T. Time to explore Tibooburra, and the Outdoor Pastoral Museum. Flat-topped mesas and fantastic views characterise the central Jump-Up country while 450 million-year-old granite tors surrounding Tibooburra form part of the southern boundary of the Sturt National Park. We check out the impressive National Parks display and explore the nearby Granites walking track at the Dead Horse campground, and considerable town and mining history before overnight here at the Family Hotel or Granites Motel BLD

Day 5 - Heading into the Sturt Desert we cross the Grey Range with a stop and walk to the lake at Fort Grey. The park protects an enormous arid landscape of space and solitude. The rolling red-sand dunes of the Strzelecki desert ripple through the western section, graduating past surprising wetlands surrounded by white sands. After some great opportunities for photos, and to explore the work of the Wild Deserts project reintroducing locally extinct mammals to Sturt National Park in the far corner of outback NSW.

We cross through the dingo fence (Earths largest man made structure) to arrive at Cameron Corner on the 3 states corner (NSW, SA & QLD). After some refreshments at the "Corner Store" we travel via Bollards Lagoon, the Yellow Bus and Merty Merty station, crossing the sand hills of the Strzelecki Desert, and Strzelecki Creek as we head up the Strzelecki Track through the uncanny Moomba oil & gas fields. We pass the location of the now decommissioned geothermal power plant / hot rocks project of Geodynamics where Australia has the hottest rocks on Earth, outside of volcanic areas.

Geologists think that 10 million years ago, the granites in the Cooper Basin, South Australia, were exposed at the surface. Since that time they have been covered by a sedimentary layer, four kilometres thick, that acts as an overlying blanket; trapping the heat and preventing it from escaping to the atmosphere.

The heat is created by naturally occurring radiogenic decay that heats the granite to more than 250 degrees Celsius. The granite temperatures in Europe are only 180 degrees Celsius. The granite belt in the Cooper Basin is fractured in horizontal layers and these fractures naturally contain water at very high pressures – up to 5, 000 pounds per square inch.

Day 6 - A chance for an early walk and look at creek side birdlife - and quirky Innamincka - before we visit Burke's Grave site.   We then drive approximately 70km further upstream crossing the SA/ QLD border and Nappa Merrie Station (once owned by S Kidman & Co) to the Burke & Wills Dig Tree.

Here Burke & Wills support team waited 4 months before departing, even though intsructed by Burke to wait 3 months. Provisions were buried for the northern explorers before the support group left only hours before Burke & Wills return, who were so weak they chose not to pursue. Lots of history, and birdlife here on the infamous Cooper Creek.

After a reflective look around here, we head for Eromanga and the Eromanga Natural History Museum where nearby Australia’s largest dinosaur was carefully excavated from the dirt and a raft of other dinosaurs followed, all species that had never been seen before. The discoveries made southwest Queensland the country’s newest palaeontology frontier. We take a museum tour and meet the discovered remains of dinosaurs "Cooper" and "Zac" and many other species.

Day 7 -  Today our destination is Bourke, back in NSW via Thargomindah, Lake Bindegolly National Park which conserves one of the most important wetland systems in south-west Queensland and is often home to prolific birdlife. Then on via Yowah and Eulo with unique Boulder opals. Cunnamulla is next where we learn of the Cunnamulla Fella (a song of a drover written by Slim Dusty) We cross the border to NSW and follow the Warrego River south for our overnight and dinner in Bourke.
