Peterborough Steamtown Railway

Peterborough was a hero of the 20th century – a hissing, steaming hub of mighty locomotives sitting at the crossroads of a growing nation.

Each night, beneath the stars of the Southern Flinders, a light begins to glow beneath a mighty steam train. There’s a hiss of piston, a rush of steam, the cry of a guardsman – and an incredible industrial legacy slowly comes to life.

Peterborough’s Steamtown was once a vast rail operation where over 100 steam locomotives passed through each day before heading to all corners of Australia.

Today, that legacy is preserved – and you’re invited to experience it for yourself.

In daylight hours, you’ll tour the sheds and the extraordinary heritage-listed ‘Roundhouse’ before getting hands-on with heroic locos and luxury carriages. And at night, you’ll thrill to the award-winning ‘Sound and Light Show’, when this powerful story plays out on a stage like no other.

Heritage Rail Trail

From Broken Hill to Port Pirie

The Heritage Rail Trail helped transform Australia from an agricultural outpost to an industrial economy in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The railway line transported silver, lead and zinc from the newly established BHP mining operation in Broken Hill to ships in Port Pirie, in South Australia's mid north.

In September 1883, seven ordinary working men pooled their cash to peg seven mineral leases on a remote, ragged-looking hill. They set to work on the Broken Hill with pick and shovel, unaware that within two years their endeavours would give rise to BHP and open up the largest deposit of lead, zinc and silver ever found.

The world was hungry for these commodities but there was a problem: how to get them out of the middle of the driest continent on the planet?

The new Heritage Rail Trail offers an outback journey like no other. We follow the remains of the Broken Hill to Port Pirie railway line, a relic of the steam age, a 400km piece of history that descends from the red dusts of New South Wales to the shimmering gulf waters of South Australia.

The little line was only 3 feet 6 inches wide but it overcame droughts, floods, locust plagues, derailments and political ill-will to become one of the busiest stretches of railway in the world. It helped to transform Australia from an agricultural outpost to an industrial economy.

This barely-known chapter of our nation's history comes to life as you journey through the 14 Heritage Rail Trail townships. Some are thriving, others are mere shadows of their past glory. All look forward to welcoming you and sharing their tales.

Download the Heritage Rail Trail brochure, providing more information about the journey, an Historic Timeline detailing the development of the Rail-line, as well as a Scavenger Hunt to entertain you along the way.

Optional extra day - Steamranger Steam Train – Goolwa to Victor Harbor

One of the most unique train rides in Australia, on the oldest steel railed railway in Australia, with some of the best views in Australia, is the enchanting ‘Cockle Train’.

The Cockle Train is run by Steamranger Heritage Railway and operates between the historic river port of Goolwa and the seaside resort of Victor Harbor.

Take a ride on PS Oscar W

Enjoy a unique river experience from the decks of the heritage Paddle Steamer Oscar W, a wood fired, steam powered vessel built in 1908 and still operating from Goolwa Wharf Precinct.

Celebrating over 100 years life on the river, passengers can watch the stokers fire the boiler, see the wheel house, and take in the sights of the Lower River Murray.
