Itinerary

Day 1 – Depart from Sydney – travelling via the famous “Dog on the Tucker Box” (Canberra pickup available) over the Great Dividing Range to Wagga Wagga, and on to Narrandera in the Heart of Australia food bowl, the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area, then Overnight Hay for a hearty local meal and overnight stop. L, D

Day 2 – Into the desert and Mungo National Park to explore this ancient lake bed environment. Learn of Mungo Man and Mungo woman, and the oldest known ritual burials in the world. Discover the Walls of China and the megafauna history of the area, explore the ancient Willandra Lakes and the historic sheep station and large and impressive shearing shed that served the area for around 100 years. Now onto the Pooncarie and the Darling River run to picturesque scenes of Menindee Lakes. We visit Kinchega National Park, to view the birdlife of Menindee Lakes then to nearby Burke and Wills camp on the banks of the Darling River. It's now a short hop to Broken Hill for dinner at the famous & delicious Mario’s Palace Hotel (full of the original murals from Priscilla Queen of the Desert fame) Overnight Broken Hill. Explore Broken Hill highlights options include The Line of Lode Lookout, a mine tour, and Miners Memorial plus Desert Sculptures. Overnight Broken Hill B, L, D

Day 3 – From Broken Hill we cross the NSW / SA border travelling through saltbush country, via remote outback towns of Yunta, Oodla Wirra, Cradock, and Orrooroo, and the 3 gauge steam railway town of Peterborough. From Hawker, we skirt Wilpena Pound, and the awesome mountain scenery of the  Heyson Range & Flinders Ranges. We cross the Goyder Line, view the Elder & Heyson Ranges, Wilpena Pound & Lake Torrens and visit the historic and award-winning Prairie Hotel at Parachilna with great outback art before arrival at our cosy overnight stop at Leigh Creek or Marree on some tours.  B, L, D

Day 4 – At Marree we check out the ancient mosque, Old Ghan railway history and Lake Eyre Yacht Club. From Marree we follow the Old Ghan Railway Line and Oodnadatta Track to William Creek. From here we can take an optional 1 hour scenic flight over Lake Eyre. (Optional extensions at extra cost). We visit the shores of Lake Eyre South and unique Mound Springs, which are permanent water flows from the Great Artesian Basin. We connect with the wonder of the bird and plant life revitalized by recent flooding rains. We visit a favourite spot for birds (including brolgas) and birdwatchers. we traverse the moon plains to Coober Pedy for the night with a sleep underground option.  Overnight Coober Pedy and a chance to buy opals or see some of the highlights of this unique place in Australian history and culture. . Day 5 -  From Coober Pedy we take a break at the spectacular colourful Breakaways - Desert Mesas where Mad Max movies were made. Then our onward journey via the SA / NT Border to Alice Springs (or Uluru option is available) to arrive at your accommodation around 5 pm.(B L ).

4 Day Lake Eyre Tours Flights - itinerary

Day 1 - From Adelaide city or airport we depart via spectacular mountain scenery adjacent the Southern Flinders Ranges. Travel via the rich wine producing region of the Clare Valley (wine tasting optional) and through the rich countryside of rural South Australia. Enjoy picturesque scenery, and rural town stops with lunch and morning tea. We have a picnic lunch in scenic Melrose at the base of Mt Remarkable and cross the Goyder Line before Quorn and Hawker, gateway to the Flinders Ranges. Enjoy Scenic views of the Elder, Druid & Heyson Ranges, Choose at checkout an optional scenic flight (30 mins recommended) over Wilpena Pound. Returning to Wilpena Pound, we check in for the night for a cosy dinner with open fire place L,D

Day 2 - Enjoy a scenic walk with the kangaroos and spectacular River Red Gums into Wilpena Pound, viewing unique flora, Old Hills Homestead. Then an optional hike up to Wangarra Hill lookout offering panoramic views of Wilpena Pound.

Depart Wilpena Pound Resort and travel the fascinating Geological Trail through 800 million years of time via Brachina Gorge and Bunyeroo Gorge in the Flinders Ranges, viewing fossils including ancient stromatolites. Arrive at the old Ghan railway town of Parachilna and the famous Prairie Hotel, with tasty treats and exceptional Aboriginal art and jewellery for sale. We travel north here following the Heyson Range via Leigh Creek (viewing the massive open cut mine now closed) via Copley and Lindhurst past the Strzelecki Track and into the desert. Stop for a look at the large and colourful ochre pits famous for trading ochre widely throughout Australia. We view the ghost town of Farina once home to 300 people.  Arrive Marree for overnight. Marree has lots to see including the ancient mosque and Old Ghan Railway history. Also the Lake Eyre Yacht Club and Birdsville Track. We depart via the Oodnadatta Track and follow the Overland Telegraph Line & Old Ghan Railway Track route. Visit historic Coward Springs & view Curdimurka Railway Sidings and the lookout at Lake Eyre South then the Mound Springs, natural springs bubbling up from the Artesian Basin. Visit the shores of Lake Eyre South. We visit creeks and water holes along the route which are favourite spots for birds (including brolgas, egrets, swans, ducks, waders,  Herons and many more) and birdwatchers. Arrive historic William Creek on Anna Creek Station (this was Sidney Kidman's largest cattle station) and head through the moon plains for Coober Pedy for overnight. This is a special sleep underground opportunity. B,L,D

Day 4 – An early start today for a town tour, view the Serbian Church and underground Umoona Museum, gallery and opal store. Today we are heading south on the Stuart Highway via desert travel & salt lakes that let you appreciate the remote and vast outback. Witness modern “oasis” outback stations and roadhouses of this great Stuart Highway connecting Australia’s north and south. Time permitting visit Woomera and the “rocket park” collection of missiles launched from this unique location, the extensive Rocket Range Museum .Womera is the location of the infamous Detention Centre. Travel via Port Augusta, see the new solar powerhouse at SunDrop Farms in Spencers Gulf and then on via rich rural lands of the Gulf of St Vincent to arrive, Adelaide this evening approximately 7pm. The Wall in the Wilderness - Artist Greg Duncan is creating a stunning sculpture at Derwent Bridge in the heart of Tasmania. The Wall in the Wilderness is a commemoration of those who helped shape the past and present of Tasmania’s central highlands. A work in progress, The Wall is being carved from three-metre high wooden panels. The carved panels will tell the history of the harsh Central Highlands region – beginning with the indigenous people, then to the pioneering timber harvesters, pastoralists, miners and Hydro workers.

We cross the Franklin River and check the wilderness lookout before driving through the bare hills of Queenstown and arriving into Strahan late afternoon on the scenic shores of Macquarie Harbour

DAY 6: Strahan – Gordon River – Tarkine – Cradle Mountain• 

Today you have the choice between a Gordon River Cruise or the West Coast Wilderness Railway. Both take you deep into Tasmania’s most stunning wilderness telling stories of the areas colourful history.• OR from Strahan, take an optional extra cost helicopter flight and fly over the King and Franklin Gordon Wild Rivers, World Heritage Area, landing on the Gordon for a short walk amongst the Huon Pines near the river junctions where the Gordon River dam was going to be, but was stopped by environmental protests. On return explore and relax on the waterfront in Strahan.• OR from Strahan there’s time to ride the steam train of the West Coast Wilderness Railway, (SEE VIDEO BELOW) a beautifully scenic and history filled journey through the forests, as we cross high bridges and climb steep grades through a narrow gorge and follow the route built by pioneers more than a century ago.• We explore Strahan and surrounds including Henty Dunes and Ocean Beach to experience the Great Southern Ocean with no land mass west of here until Argentina. We depart the area via the historic mining town of a Zeehan. We take the ferry over the Pieman River then the dirt road from Corinna through the unique Tarkine Forest region to Savage River. We stop at the Heritage Mining town of Waratah to admire the waterfall in the middle of town and the old miner’s Stamper Mill, before arriving into Cradle Mountain.• Tonight will include an optional tour ‘Devils@Cradle’, where you can watch Tasmanian Devils feed at night• Dinner at Cradle MountainOvernight Cradle Mountain (B, L, D)

This ancient glacial area is one of Tasmania’s highlights. Enjoy the unique climate and spectacular scenery with numerous walks, or just relax with our 2 nights in the Cradle Mountain Lodge.• Dove Lake Circuit Walk – A fairly easy grade makes this walk suitable for all ages and fitness levels, focusing on Cradle Mountain, temperate rainforests and sub alpine plant communities.

See Cradle Mountain in all its glory and learn about the action of past glaciers on the landscape.

DAY 8: Cradle Mountain – Arthur River – Stanley – The Nut – Burnie – Launceston• After a tasty breakfast, we drive back into the Tarkine Forest region for quiet walks time in this amazing forest. Then travel via the west coast road to Arthur River with time at Couta Rocks and The Edge of the World at Gardiners Point. The ocean west of Tasmania is the longest uninterrupted expanse of ocean on the globe. From Argentina the currents sweep unimpeded more than halfway around the planet until they hit this point. Enjoy the quaint Tasmanian village of Arthur River Ocean then north to Stanley and the famous Nut, visiting Rocky Cape National Park & lighthouse. Returning along the northern coast road via Burnie and Penguin to Launceston.• Return to Launceston for flights home approx 1900 hrs• Optionally extend your stay in Tasmania for flights or ferry next day. Day 1 – Depart your Sydney hotel or accommodation at 730 am and enjoy the fresh early light and air of the spectacular Blue Mountains. Visit Katoomba, Leura, Echo Point, Three Sisters, Jamieson Valley (Grand Canyon) and Cliff Drive over Megalong Valley before a morning tea at Govett’s Leap near Blackheath, overlooking the Grose Valley and spectacular Blue Gum Forest in the Blue Mountains. OPTIONAL EXTRA NIGHT IN BLUE MOUNTAINS

Descent the 1500 metres of the Great Dividing Range and from Pearson’s Lookout view the Blue Mountains region and Wollomi National Park in this World Heritage area. Enjoy a tasty lunch at a Winery in Mudgee and enjoy wine tasting. Travel on through old gold mining towns, and historic Gulgong – the town that was on the $10 note. Dine at own expense in town (numerous options) and consider a visit to the Sky Watch Observatory to view the night sky through their giant telescope. 4 Day Lake Eyre Tours Flights - itinerary

Depart from Broken Hill return to Broken Hill via Lake Eyre – Optional flights over Lake Eyre, lake shore by 4WD, wetlands birds areas, see the Old Ghan Railway, Tom Kruse Outback Mailman from “Back of Beyond” truck & history, Oodnadatta Track, Birdsville Track, Marree, Leigh Creek, Copley, Lake Eyre National Park, Flinders Ranges. Connection options to Sydney, Adelaide or Melbourne

Day 1 – From Broken Hill we cross the NSW / SA border travelling through saltbush country, via remote outback towns of Yunta, Oodla Wirra, Craddock, and Orrooroo, and the 3 gauge steam railway town of Peterborough with a look in at the railway history. Enjoy picturesque scenery, and rural town stops with lunch and morning tea. We have a picnic lunch near Orooroo and cross the Goyder Line before Hawker and the the gateway to the Flinders Ranges. Enjoy Scenic views of the Elder, Druid & Heyson Ranges, then to Wilpena Pound Homestead for an easy walk around this old sheep station. We check in for the night for a cosy dinner with open fire place at Wilpena Pounfd Resort. L,D

Day 2 – Enjoy an optional scenic flight over Wilpena Pound before an easy walk with the kangaroos, EMUS, and spectacular River Red Gums into Wilpena Pound, viewing unique flora, creek crossings and the Old Hills Homestead. Then an optional hike up to Wangarra Hill lookout offering panoramic views of Wilpena Pound. Depart Wilpena Pound Resort and travel the fascinating Geological Trail through 800 million years of time via Brachina Gorge and Bunyeroo Gorge in the Flinders Ranges, viewing fossils including ancient stromatalites. Arrive at the old Ghan railway town of Parachilna and the famous Prairie Hotel, with tasty treats and exceptional Aboriginal art and jewellery for sale. We travel north here following the Heyson Range via Leigh Creek (viewing the massive open cut mine ow closed) via Copley and Lindhurst past the Strzelecki and Birdsville Tracks and into the desert. Arrive Marree for overnight. B,L,D

Day 3 – From Marree we usually opt for an early morning flight, for best light and still air conditions. Alternatively flights may be from William Creek, depending on availability at time of booking and the duration of your flight chosen. If an extended flight is chosen, less time is available for ground viewing on the Oodnadatta Track or travel to William Creek.. While in Marree check out the ancient mosque and Old Ghan Railway history. Also the Lake Eyre Yacht Club and Birdsville Track. We follow the Oodnadatta Track Overland Telegraph Line & Old Ghan Railway Track and visit historic Coward Springs & Curdimurka Railway Sidings and the lookout at Lake Eyre South then the Mound Springs, natural springs bubbling up from the Artesian Basin. Visit the shores of Lake Eyre south and connect with the wonder of the bird and plant life revitalised by flooding rains. We visit the shore of Lake Eyre south to really appreciate the scale of these vast waterways, and stop at creeks and water holes along the route which are favourite spots for birds (including brolgas, egrets, swans, ducks, waders,  Herons and many more) and birdwatchers. If choosing the Birdsville extended flight (see extras when booking, your flight will return you to Marree for overnight).  B,L,D

Day 4 –Today we visit the Old Ghan ghost town of Farina, view the giant Leigh Creek coal mine, the fascinating and colourful Ochre Pits and travel via old Ghan railway towns including Wilson, Woolshed Flat via the Flinders Ranges to Hawker and stunning mountain landscapes.  We visit the impressive Kanyaka Station & view stone woolshed ruins (time permitting) as we follow the Old Ghan Line via Hawker.   We return to Broken Hill with fond memories of this vast country, and new friendships to arrive around 6pm, delivered to your accommodation. ITINERARY


Day 1 – From Adelaide pickup approximately 7 am from airport or your accommodation for departure via spectacular mountain scenery as we travel via Clare Valley wine country, then the Flinders Ranges to Wilpena Pound. Our journey takes us through rural SA to enjoy picturesque roadside stops for lunch and a morning and afternoon teas. Visit historic Quorn & Hawker before arrival at Wilpena Pound resort for our overnight stop.  Enjoy a sunset walk with the kangaroos amongst the ancient Red River Gums L, D

Day 2 – This morning we recommend the spectacular optional scenic flight over Wilpena Pound and he stunning Flinders Ranges. There’s time also to enjoy the Wangarra Lookout & Hills Homestead walk into the Pound. We leave Wilpena and travel through the range via the Brachina Gorge Geological Trail where the oldest rocks in the world have been identified. Visit historic Parachilna Pub then Farina Ghan railway town ruins before travel on to Marree. Check out the ancient mosque and Ghan railway history. Overnight Marree.  B,L,D

Day 3 – In Marree check out the Lake Eyre Yacht Club and Marree Aboriginal & pioneer history. We aim to visit the shores of Lake Eyre, usually .at Level Post Bay and visit a favourite waterhole for
birds (including brolgas, egrets, herrings, stilts, pelicans) and
birdwatchers.Today we travel the Oodnadatta Track following the Old Ghan Railway via various old rail bridges and sidings from the Ghan hey days. We arrive Coward Springs (an old Ghan rail town) for an optional quick dip in the hot springs and cross the path of the old Overland Telegraph line. We detour off the Oodnadatta Track to visit the Bubbler & Blanche Cup at the Wabma Kadarbu Mound Springs Conservation Park. At William Creek an optional Painted Desert flight may be available, and enjoy the collection of “space junk” collected from the Woomera Rocket range.   Flights may be from Marree depending where latest water flows and birds are on the day. Day 4 – From William Creek we take an optional  2 hour scenic flight over Lake Eyre. On return we head for, and may visit the Lake Eyre western shore at Halligan Bay. We continue up the track to Oodnadatta via the Old Ghan route and largest bridge at Algebuckina. Time for a look around Oodnadatta then we head for the Painted Desert for late afternoon light viewing, before we enter the moonscape of the world’s largest opal mining town of Coober Pedy and enjoy a local restaurant meal (own cost), and a cosy underground motel in the earth dug the opal mining way. (above ground conventional motel options also available) B,L,D

Day 5 – Visit Coober Pedy’s underground museum of opal mining, before heading south on the Stuart Highway desert travel & salt lakes lets you appreciate the remote and vast outback. Witness modern “oasis” outback stations and transport roadhouses of this great Stuart Highway  connecting Australia’s north and south. Visit Woomera and the “rocket park” collection of missiles launched from this unique location, and view the infamous detention centre. Travel via Port Augusta, the powerhouse of Spencers Gulf and a cuppa by the water front, then on via rich rural lands of the Gulf of St Vincent  to arrive Adelaide early evening. Tour ends approx 7 pm. B,L
