Itinerary - may run in reverse order

Day 1 – Depart Sydney for the Blue Mountains with morning tea at stunning views from Govetts Leap over the Grose Valley. Moving on via Lithgow to Bathurst and the fascinating history of the gold rush and Cobb & Co coaches. We travel via Orange to near Parkes to visit The Dish Exhibition Centre at the giant CSIRO operated radiotelescope that brought the 1st moon landing images to Earth. Back in Parkes, and less famous is the King's Castle, Australia's very own Elvis Presley museum created by the original yellow Wiggle Greg Page.

Heading west we travel beside the Indian Pacific railway route and visit Manildra, Bogan Gate and Condobolin, in extensive Murray Darling Basin wheat, grain, sheep and cattle producing areas with a taste of the far west of NSW. Arrive for overnight at Lake Cargelligo.

Day 2 - We depart for Hillston, once an important stop for the stagecoaches of Cobb and Co. then on via Ivanhoe on the Cobb Highway, part of the Kidman Way. Arriving in Menindee we visit Kinchega National Park, to view the birdlife of Menindee Lakes then to nearby Burke and Wills camp on the banks of the Darling River. It's now a short hop to Broken Hill for dinner at the famous & delicious Mario’s Palace Hotel (full of the original murals from Priscilla Queen of the Desert fame) Overnight Broken Hill.

Day 3 – Explore Broken Hill highlights (your choice) options include Pro Hart Gallery, The Line of Lode Lookout, a mine tour, and Miners Memorial plus Desert Sculptures or Lake Mungo or Mutawintji National Parks (optional extra day tour) for exceptional rock art rich in Aboriginal history. Overnight Broken Hill.

Day 4  -  Depart Broken Hill through the Barrier Range on the Silver City Highway via Packsaddle for Milparinka Appreciate this once thriving gold mining town at the restored Milparinka Heritage Precinct withh impressive new displays of early life and Sturts expedition. This area has been extensively mined for tin, lead and gold and operated large sheep stations. 

We can also visit Poole's Grave and Depot Glen, where explorer Charles Sturt spent 6 months in 1845 with a team of men, waiting for rain and cooler conditions. T. Time to explore Tibooburra, and the Outdoor Pastoral Museum. Flat-topped mesas and fantastic views characterise the central Jump-Up country while 450 million-year-old granite tors surrounding Tibooburra form part of the southern boundary of the Sturt National Park. We check out the impressive National Parks display and explore the nearby Granites walking track at the Dead Horse campground, and considerable town and mining history before overnight here at the Family Hotel or Granites Motel BLD

Day 5 - Heading into the Sturt Desert we cross the Grey Range with a stop and walk to the lake at Fort Grey. The park protects an enormous arid landscape of space and solitude. The rolling red-sand dunes of the Strzelecki desert ripple through the western section, graduating past surprising wetlands surrounded by white sands. After some great opportunities for photos, and to explore the work of the Wild Deserts project reintroducing locally extinct mammals to Sturt National Park in the far corner of outback NSW.

We cross through the dingo fence (Earths largest man made structure) to arrive at Cameron Corner on the 3 states corner (NSW, SA & QLD). After some refreshments at the "Corner Store" we travel via Bollards Lagoon, the Yellow Bus and Merty Merty station, crossing the sand hills of the Strzelecki Desert, and Strzelecki Creek as we head up the Strzelecki Track through the uncanny Moomba oil & gas fields. We pass the location of the now decommissioned geothermal power plant / hot rocks project of Geodynamics where Australia has the hottest rocks on Earth, outside of volcanic areas.

Geologists think that 10 million years ago, the granites in the Cooper Basin, South Australia, were exposed at the surface. Since that time they have been covered by a sedimentary layer, four kilometres thick, that acts as an overlying blanket; trapping the heat and preventing it from escaping to the atmosphere.

The heat is created by naturally occurring radiogenic decay that heats the granite to more than 250 degrees Celsius. The granite temperatures in Europe are only 180 degrees Celsius. The granite belt in the Cooper Basin is fractured in horizontal layers and these fractures naturally contain water at very high pressures – up to 5, 000 pounds per square inch.

Day 6 - A chance for an early walk and look at creek side birdlife - and quirky Innamincka - before we visit Burke's Grave site.   We then drive approximately 70km further upstream crossing the SA/ QLD border and Nappa Merrie Station (once owned by S Kidman & Co) to the Burke & Wills Dig Tree.

Here Burke & Wills support team waited 4 months before departing, even though intsructed by Burke to wait 3 months. Provisions were buried for the northern explorers before the support group left only hours before Burke & Wills return, who were so weak they chose not to pursue. Lots of history, and birdlife here on the infamous Cooper Creek.

After a reflective look around here, we head for Eromanga and the Eromanga Natural History Museum where nearby Australia’s largest dinosaur was carefully excavated from the dirt and a raft of other dinosaurs followed, all species that had never been seen before. The discoveries made southwest Queensland the country’s newest palaeontology frontier. We take a museum tour and meet the discovered remains of dinosaurs "Cooper" and "Zac" and many other species. Day 7 -  Today our destination is Bourke, back in NSW via Thargomindah, Lake Bindegolly National Park which conserves one of the most important wetland systems in south-west Queensland and is often home to prolific birdlife. Then on via Yowah and Eulo with unique Boulder opals. Cunnamulla is next where we learn of the Cunnamulla Fella (a song of a drover written by Slim Dusty) We cross the border to NSW and follow the Warrego River south for our overnight and dinner in Bourke.

Day 8 - In Bourke we take a cruise along the Darling River on the Jandra, a rebuilt historic paddleboat to recall the river boat history. In recent years Bourke has undergone a remarkable revitalisation and is now a shining light in the remote west of NSW. The impressive ‘Back O’Bourke’ centre showcases the early days of Bourke and beyond. Discover the Outback life of Henry Lawson, and the search for an inland sea. Hear the stories of the ‘women of the west’ including Nancy Bird Walton, who flew an air ambulance here in the 1930’s. Stop by the 110 year old Morrall’s bakery for a pie or pastry, follow the Heritage Trail through town, or visit the grave of Fred Hollows.  Overnight Bourke.

Day 9 - We head for Brewarrina on the Barwon River, and the 40,000-year-old Aboriginal Fish Traps - still working. The Brewarrina fish traps are one of the oldest man-made structures on earth. This elaborate network of rock weirs and pools stretches for around half a kilometre along the riverbed and was built by ancient tribes, to catch fish as they swam upstream. Heading south to Macquarie Marshes a UNESCO registered site of outstanding value as one of the most important wetland areas in the world. It is one of the most crucial breeding sites for waterbirds in Australia, with 77 species, along with over 150 other birds, as well as fish, turtles, frogs, snakes and mammals. We travel on via silo art in Coonamble then take the scenic road to the beautiful Warrumbungles for a delightful bush walk with wonderful views of The Breadknife.

The Warrumbungles is Australia’s only Dark Sky Park, meaning it is our only Internationally recognised park with an exceptional quality of starry nights and an environment specifically protected for its scientific, natural, educational, cultural heritage, and public enjoyment. Day 10 - In Coonabarabran  view the Diprotodon fossil remains discovered at nearby Tambar Springs. Back in the 'bungles take a tour of Siding Springs Observatory, home to Australia’s largest optical telescope. Since opening in 1964, The Australian National University has operated the observatory site hosting research telescopes from the ANU's Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics (RSAA), Las Cumbres Observatory (LCO) and many other institutions from around the world. Research is varied, from probing the depths of the cosmos in search of "Dark Energy" to searching the Milky Way for other planets and signs of life. We tour inside the dome of the largest telescope and learn of its workings plus visist the adjacent astronomy exhibition centre.

We depart the region mid morning and drive through Dunedoo, known for its poetry, hospitality, and name, or alternatively via Coolah, one of several towns to claim bragging rights as the home of the legendary Black Stump. It was here that the colloquial saying ‘Beyond the Black Stump’, meaning ‘beyond the limits of civilisation,’ is said to have originated.

On the way to Gulgong - the town that was on the way to Gulgong - the town that was on the $10 note. This small village from the gold rush days is a delight to take in the regional history and historic buildings. We are now a short drive to Mudgee where we’ll taste some local wines and have lunch in a vineyard. Travel via Lithgow and the Zig Zag railway and back to Sydney via spectacular Grose Valley views and Mt Tomah on Bells Line fo Road to Sydney and tour completion.

Day 1 - Tour commences from Broome Monday 8 am. We travel the Northern Highway through extensive cattle country to Port Hedland. Enroute enjoy a (short) walk on 80 Mile Beach. Visit the Port Hedland docks, exporting the worlds largest shipments of iron ore from BHPs railhead & storage facility. BLD

The Tom Price Rio Tinto Mine – The Mount Tom price mine is owned by RioTinto / Hamersley Iron and operated by Pilbara iron. Day 3 – From Marree we usually opt for an early morning flight, for best light and still air conditions. Alternatively flights may be from William Creek, depending on availability at time of booking and the duration of your flight chosen. If an extended flight is chosen, less time is available for ground viewing on the Oodnadatta Track or travel to William Creek.. While in Marree check out the ancient mosque and Old Ghan Railway history. Also the Lake Eyre Yacht Club and Birdsville Track. We follow the Oodnadatta Track Overland Telegraph Line & Old Ghan Railway Track and visit historic Coward Springs & Curdimurka Railway Sidings and the lookout at Lake Eyre South then the Mound Springs, natural springs bubbling up from the Artesian Basin. Visit the shores of Lake Eyre south and connect with the wonder of the bird and plant life revitalised by flooding rains. We visit the shore of Lake Eyre south to really appreciate the scale of these vast waterways, and stop at creeks and water holes along the route which are favourite spots for birds (including brolgas, egrets, swans, ducks, waders,  Herons and many more) and birdwatchers. Day 1 - Departs Broome via the Savannah Way through expansive Savannah woodlands and grasslands, we cross the Fitzroy River at Willare and stop here for a morning cuppa. We travel on Windjana Gorge in the 300 million year old Devonian Reef known as the Napier Range, and and take a walk in this erie ancient landscape where the dinosaurs roamed. Here we usually see scores of crocodiles basking in the sun.This is where the Aboriginal freedom fighter Jandamarra and the Bunuba Resistance was centred in the 1890s, depicted in 2 novels and a stage production. After a walk in the gorge by the Lennard River enjoy lunch in this special environment in the National Park. We then travel the short distance along the Devonian Reef and majestic boab trees to Tunnel Creek here we don our waterproof shoes and headlight torches to take a walk through the underground river system with amazing stalagtites and stalagmites..We travel then to our comfy night at the the Fitzroy River Lodge at Fitzroy Crossing.  LD

Day 2 - This morning and early start to catch the best of the wildlife on a  a relaxing Geike Gorge Fitzroy River cruise. Marvel at the high cliffs, annual flood records, stunning wildlife and river tales from our knowledgeable local guide. If open visit the local Aboriginal Art Centre for unique art works by local artists. Travelling east, we stop for the view and photos at Ngumban Cliffs a picturesque lookout between the Devonian Reef and ancient Kimberely sandstones and mesas. We stop at Marys Pool for lunch which is a haven for birds and crocs before Halls Creek with gold mining history and Aboriginal art centre. Time permitting we visit to the fascinating quartz rock intrusion through the landscape, known as the China Wall, then overnight at Halls Creek. BLD

Day 3 - All aboard for the scenic route through the ranges and deep into Purnululu National Park and the Bungle Bungles to Cathedral Gorge. Learn of the Bungle Bungles heritage and hear some of nature’s hidden secrets. Be amazed on your easy walk into the stunning Cathedral Gorge, and Piccaninny Creek where a popular Qantas advertisement was filmed, you will be surrounded by the Beehive Domes for which the park is so famous. After lunch an optional walk in Echidna Chasm or to a nearby Osmand Lookout Optional scenic helicopter flights available – 18 mins approx $300) Overnight Warmun / Turkey Creek. BLD

Day 4 -  Depart via Turkey Creek via the incredible Ragged Ranges past the well hidden Argyle Diamond Mine plus nickel and iron ore mines. We now arrive on the Gibb River Road for El Questro Station, a million acres of spectacular Kimberley scenery, rivers and gorges. It's here that the movie Australia was filmed, nestled under the Cockburn Ranges. Theres time to relax under the palm trees in the Zebedee Hot Springs before lunch at Jackaroos Waterhole by Moonshine Creek. This afternoon take an optional; Chamberlain River Cruise or just relax by the pool at El Questro or take an afternoon walk. Dinner own at own expense at the El Questro restaurant. Day 5 – This morning  we take a walk up Emma Gorge, or alternative Amalia Gorge, with beautiful waterfalls and great swimming holes before we journey the scenic and spectacular Gibb River Road via the Cockburn Range. We pass by many boab trees to cross the largest river crossing in the Kimberley, the mighty Pentecost River. We take  a break from a high vantage point to view this amazing scene. passing via Home Valley Station the days journey takes us through varying terrain including high mountains and "jump ups", and some great river crossings, including the Durack River. as we travel from East to West Kimberley. Enjoy a break and birdspotting by the Durack. We take a left turn at the Kalumburu Road intersection and cross the Hann River, then a look in at Gibb River Station and a chat with the locals at the local Aboriginal community store, with local Aboriginal artwork. Overnight here or depending on availability at Mt Elizabeth Station. BLD

Day 6 - Nearby Manning Gorge waterhole is a beautiful site surrounded by large paperbark trees and is the largest accessible waterhole on the Gibb River Road. Spend some quality time here, and visit nearby Aboriginal Rock Art before we visit Mount Barnet Roadhouse, at the middle of the Gibb River Road, and a local hub and Aboriginal community centre. We can restock here, and update supplies before we head down the road to an easy 800 m walk to pictureque Galvans Gorge with Wandjina rock art, and an optional swim in the waterhole under the waterfall. Travel on through spectacular Kimberley geology, woodlands and river crossings and arrive at Imitji Community on Mt House Station, with its Aboriginal Art centre and local artists work for sale. We visit spectacular Dalmanyi (Bell Gorge) this afternoon for a hearty walk, an optional swim and great photos, then head to our overnight accommodation at Imitji Bell Gorge safaris camp or Mt Hart.  (depending on availability at time of booking)  BLD

Day 7 – Our tour climbs the Wunaamin Miliwundi Ranges (formerly between 1879 and 2020, the King Leopold Ranges and we travel through the picturesque Inglis Gap and King Leopold Conservation Park. This is spectacular mountain country with impressive views over the ranges and vast woodlands and plains

Today more amazing scenery as we cross the Lennard River and pass through the ancient Devonian era Napier Range at Queen Victoria Pass viewing "Queen Victoria Head". Travel via comfortable highway cruising toward Derby, to visit the famous Prison Boab tree, and Derby highlights including the Derby wharf (30 ft tides!) on King Sound, the world’s longest cattle drinking trough, the new Mowanjum Aboriginal Art Centre (meet the artists, learn and buy from source) at Mowanjum Aboriginal Community. Depart for Broome to arrive late afternoon, time permitting to enjoy sunset at Cable Beach over the Indian Ocean and delivery to your accommodation ( accommodation own arrangement). Day 1 - Departs Broome via the Savannah Way through expansive Savannah woodlands and grasslands, we cross the Fitzroy River at Willare and stop here for a morning cuppa. We travel on Windjana Gorge in the 300 million year old Devonian Reef known as the Napier Range, and and take a walk in this erie ancient landscape where the dinosaurs roamed. Here we usually see scores of crocodiles basking in the sun.This is where the Aboriginal freedom fighter Jandamarra and the Bunuba Resistance was centred in the 1890s, depicted in 2 novels and a stage production. After a walk in the gorge by the Lennard River enjoy lunch in this special environment in the National Park. We then travel the short distance along the Devonian Reef and majestic boab trees to Tunnel Creek here we don our waterproof shoes and headlight torches to take a walk through the underground river system with amazing stalagtites and stalagmites..We travel then to our comfy night at the the Fitzroy River Lodge at Fitzroy Crossing.  LD

Day 2 - This morning and early start to catch the best of the wildlife on a  a relaxing Geike Gorge Fitzroy River cruise. Marvel at the high cliffs, annual flood records, stunning wildlife and river tales from our knowledgeable local guide. If open visit the local Aboriginal Art Centre for unique art works by local artists. Travelling east, we stop for the view and photos at Ngumban Cliffs a picturesque lookout between the Devonian Reef and ancient Kimberley sandstones and mesas. We stop at Marys Pool for lunch which is a haven for birds and crocs before Halls Creek with gold mining history and Aboriginal art centre. Time permitting we visit to the fascinating quartz rock intrusion through the landscape, known as the China Wall, then overnight at Halls Creek. BLD

Day 3 - All aboard for the scenic route through the ranges and deep into Purnululu National Park and the Bungle Bungles to Cathedral Gorge. Learn of the Bungle Bungles heritage and hear some of nature’s hidden secrets. Be amazed on your easy walk into the stunning Cathedral Gorge, and Picaninny Creek where a popular Qantas advertisement was filmed, you will be surrounded by the Beehive Domes for which the park is so famous. Day 4 -  Depart via Turkey Creek via the incredible Ragged Ranges past the well hidden Argyle Diamond Mine plus nickel and iron ore mines. We now arrive on the Gibb River Road for El Questro Station, a million acres of spectacular Kimberley scenery, rivers and gorges. It's here that the movie Australia was filmed, nestled under the Cockburn Ranges. Theres time to relax under the palm trees in the Zebedee Hot Springs before lunch at Jackaroos Waterhole by Moonshine Creek. Itinerary Details

Day 1 – Adelaide to Coober Pedy – Depart 7:00 am via Port Wakefield , the giant winDfarms of Snowtown and Spencers Gulf to Port Augusta with its historic precinct for morning tea on the old Port Augusta Dock. We head north up the Stuart Highway via Pimba and visit Woomera's historic rocket museum (passengers willing) then vast historic sheep stations including Glendambo. Arrive Coober Pedy late afternoon for dinner and a comfy sleep in underground accommodation amongst the opals (or above ground option available) LD

Day 2 – You can check out the opals and fascinating Umoona underground museum before we head off into the desert to The Painted Hills including Mount Arckaringa - these Ochre coloured hills are a unique feature of this area. We arrrive Oodnadatta and have a cuppa at the famous Pink Roadhouse before visiting the Old Ghan Railway Museum full of wonderfull history of the establishment and operation of Oodnadatta and the railway. Oodnadatta was established on the Neales River in 1889 it was South Australia’s most northern railway town. It was a starting point for pioneering travellers heading north and a major railhead for cattle being walked down the northern stock routes. By 1893, Oodnadatta boasted a diverse population which included Afghans, Chinese & Europeans. We travel north from Oodnadatta following sections of the old Ghan Track and visit Pedirka Siding Ruins and the Old Dalhousie Springs Homestead.

We enter Witjira National Park and arrive at Dalhousie Springs, a vast area of natural springs outpouring from the Great Artesian Basin – Dalhousie Springs is a series of 60 natural artesian springs from the Great Artesian Basin. Swim option at Dalhousie Springs in 38-43 Deg C water. Enter the Simpson Desert Regional Reserve – Overnight camp here on the edge of the Simpson Desert. BLD

Day 3 – Heading into the Simpson Desert Regional Reserve we cross the floodplains of Spring Creek Delta moving into numerous salt lakes and higher sand dunes. We take a break at Purnie Bore before more of the French Line with spectacular views from the top and great feeling of humility and nurturing by nature within the dunes. We travel over and longitudinally between the sandhills. Great photo opportunities, maybe a dingo or two to see, sunsets and sunrises and wildflowers. Enjoy and evening campfire at our remote desert camp BLD

Day 4-6 – We cross more salt lakes and sand dunes, but also travel parallel to the dunes for a different perspective of the landscape. We visit the Approdinna Attora Knolls, high gypsum hills with a great lookout over the desert. We see remnants of other travellers and oil searches in the desert. Take a break at Poeppels Corner marking the meeting of QLD, NT & SA borders. Overnight under the stars in our remote camp.

Day 7 – We cross Eyre Creek and traverse the largest sandhill, Big Red is also known as Nappanerica Dune, on the western edge of Lake Nappanerica, and the eastern edge of The Simpson Desert. Overnight ensuite accommodation in Birdsville. BLD

Day 8– This morning, time to check out Birdsville and unquie features of this once bussling town which was a customs post for cattle heading down the track. Consider an optional flight over Lake Eyre, Goyder Lagoon & Simpson Desert. (book early). We visit the historic Burke and Wills camp tree by the Diamantina River After lunch we head past the famous Birdsville Race Track and down the Birdsville Track to Mungerannie for overnight. BLD

Day 9 – This morning we cross the Cooper Creek, and flood plain, visit old station ruins including Lake Harry. Arriving in Marree, explore this once thriving railway town that helped save Darwin during WWII with 56 trains per week ! Marree is at the junction of the Birdsville and Oodnadatta Tracks, and the path of the Great Northern  Railway / Old Ghan for over 100 years, so lots of history here including Aboriginal museum and history, Tom Kruse (Outback Mailman from “Back of Beyond”) and Donald Campbells Bluebird story. Take an optional 1 or 2 hour scenic flight over Lake Eyre to see the Warburton Groove, the main inflow channel to Lake Eyre, Elliot Price Conservation Park, Halligan Bay, Lake Eyre South and the Marree Man (a 4 km long, giant engraving in the landscape). On return to base, we see some of the sights of Marree, this once thriving Ghan Railway town. Marree is caretaker for some interesting railway relics, plus  the old mail truck used by legendary outback mailman Tom Kruse on the run from Marree to Birdsville. We visit the shores of Lake Eyre and Lake Eyre National Park and connect with the wonder of the bird and plant life revitalised by recent flooding rains in a permanent waterhole. Overnight in Marree with a few yarns around the campfire or at the local pub. BLD

Day 10 – Today we visit the restored ruins of the old Ghan railway town of Farina, which once supported 300 people. We view the giant Leigh Creek coal mine (now closed), enjoy a break at the Quandong cafe at Copley and travel via old Ghan railway towns to Parachilna, and the Prairie Hotel in the foothills of the Flinders Ranges to Hawker and historic Quorn, home of the Pitchi Ritchi Railway, and via picturesque mountain landscapes via the Pitchi Ritchi Pass to arrive in Adelaide around 6pm. Day 1 – Depart Cairns traveling via the scenic Atherton Tablelands to Undarra Lava Tubes, where we explore these fascinating formations created by ancient volcanic activity some 190,000 years ago. The lava tubes are part of the world’s longest lava flow from a single volcano in modern geological time.After a 2-hour tour and lunch, we head west through Georgetown, with its multi-award-winning Ted Elliott Mineral Collection, before arriving at George town for an overnight stay. Day 2 – Karumba & Gulflander RailwayToday we follow the Gulflander Railway line, traveling via the Gulf Development Road. We explore Croydon, once home to 7,000 people and122 pubs during the gold rush era. Continuing west, we reach Normanton,a town steeped in history with its Burns Philp store and the iconic Purple Pub. We then head to Karumba, located on the edge of the Gulf of Carpentaria, where we enjoy a spectacular sunset river cruise.Overnight in Karumba, where you can dine at a local restaurant famous for fresh seafood. Day 3 – Burke & Wills Last Camp and Gregory Downs We travel through historic frontier towns, stopping at Burke & Wills Last Camp 119, the site of the explorers' final camp before their ill-fated journey. We visit Burketown, a town established in 1865 to serve new pastoral holdings, then cross the Plains of Promise, a region visited by the H.M. Brig Beagle in 1841. Crossing the Leichardt River, named after the explorer Ludwig Leichardt, we continue to Gregory Downs for our overnight stay, where we base ourselves to explore Adel’s Grove and Lawn Hill National Park (Boodjamulla National Park). Day 4 – Adel’s Grove and Lawn Hill National Park - Today we visit Adel’s Grove, originally an experimental botanical garden established by Albert de Lestang (ADEL) in 1920, before exploring Lawn Hill National Park. Enjoy walks, canoeing, or a swim in the stunning lagoons andrivers with picturesque waterfalls. In the afternoon, we explore the Riversleigh Megafauna Fossil Fields, one of the richest fossil deposits in the world,revealing a fascinating prehistoric landscape. Return to Gregory Downs (or the "Helton" at Hells Gate Roadhouse for overnight. Day 5 – Hells Gate and Borroloola - We head west toward the Northern Territory, (on the dirt Highway 1) crossing many rivers in the Gulf region via the MacArthur River mine to Borroloola,known for its fascinating mix of Aboriginal cultures and frontier history, which we see on display in the old police station. Day 6 – Lost City and Lorella Springs Wilderness Park - Today, we enter Limmen National Park to explore the spectacular Southern Lost City, and walk amongst these giant columns of sandstone that look like an ancient city, formed when the region was once underwater. An optional helicopter flight over these impressive sandstone pillars may be available- please advise if interested.Then we enjoy a relaxing evening at the beautiful Lorella Springs Wilderness Park, with its many rock pools and thermal springs. Day 7 – Lorella Springs Wilderness Park - Spend the day at Lorella Springs, a one-million-acre outback cattle station surrounded by pristine wilderness. You can relax in the numerous thermal pools, explore the nearby Flying Fox Swamp, or visit the popular Nanny’s Pool. The area is a haven for birdlife, and there are many opportunities for adventure and exploration. Overnight at Lorella Springs. BLD

 

Day 8 – An early morning soak in the nearby hot springs could suit you, before departure for Roper Bar and Matarranka We depart Lorella Springs, to scenic Butterfly Falls named diue to the massive numbers of butterflys that breed here. Traveling north with stop at Roper Bar, an historic location on the Roper River and the border of Arnhem Land. Learn about the area's steamboat history and its role in supplying materials for the Overland Telegraph Line in the 1860s and 1870s. Overnight at Mataranka. BLD

 

Day 9 – Mataranka to Darwin On our final day, we enjoy Mataranka, famous for its hot springs and the setting of the novel "We of the Never Never." Take a dip in the refreshing thermal waters or enjoy learning about the area's history before continuing to Katherine, the Northern Territory’s third-largest town. We then travel via Pine Creek, known for its gold and railway heritage, before arriving in Darwin to conclude the tour. BL Accommodation own arrangements

The Wall in the Wilderness - Artist Greg Duncan is creating a stunning sculpture at Derwent Bridge in the heart of Tasmania. The Wall in the Wilderness is a commemoration of those who helped shape the past and present of Tasmania’s central highlands. A work in progress, The Wall is being carved from three-metre high wooden panels. The carved panels will tell the history of the harsh Central Highlands region – beginning with the indigenous people, then to the pioneering timber harvesters, pastoralists, miners and Hydro workers.

DAY 6: Strahan – Gordon River – Tarkine – Cradle Mountain• 

Today you have the choice between a Gordon River Cruise or the West Coast Wilderness Railway. Both take you deep into Tasmania’s most stunning wilderness telling stories of the areas colourful history.• OR from Strahan, take an optional extra cost helicopter flight and fly over the King and Franklin Gordon Wild Rivers, World Heritage Area, landing on the Gordon for a short walk amongst the Huon Pines near the river junctions where the Gordon River dam was going to be, but was stopped by environmental protests. On return explore and relax on the waterfront in Strahan.• OR from Strahan there’s time to ride the steam train of the West Coast Wilderness Railway, (SEE VIDEO BELOW) a beautifully scenic and history filled journey through the forests, as we cross high bridges and climb steep grades through a narrow gorge and follow the route built by pioneers more than a century ago.• We explore Strahan and surrounds including Henty Dunes and Ocean Beach to experience the Great Southern Ocean with no land mass west of here until Argentina. We depart the area via the historic mining town of a Zeehan. We take the ferry over the Pieman River then the dirt road from Corinna through the unique Tarkine Forest region to Savage River. We stop at the Heritage Mining town of Waratah to admire the waterfall in the middle of town and the old miner’s Stamper Mill, before arriving into Cradle Mountain.• Tonight will include an optional tour ‘Devils@Cradle’, where you can watch Tasmanian Devils feed at night• Dinner at Cradle MountainOvernight Cradle Mountain (B, L, D)

DAY 7: Cradle Mountain

This ancient glacial area is one of Tasmania’s highlights. Enjoy the unique climate and spectacular scenery with numerous walks, or just relax with our 2 nights in the Cradle Mountain Lodge.• Dove Lake Circuit Walk – A fairly easy grade makes this walk suitable for all ages and fitness levels, focusing on Cradle Mountain, temperate rainforests and sub alpine plant communities.

Then travel via the west coast road to Arthur River with time at Couta Rocks and The Edge of the World at Gardiners Point. The ocean west of Tasmania is the longest uninterrupted expanse of ocean on the globe. From Argentina the currents sweep unimpeded more than halfway around the planet until they hit this point. Enjoy the quaint Tasmanian village of Arthur River Ocean then north to Stanley and the famous Nut, visiting Rocky Cape National Park & lighthouse. Returning along the northern coast road via Burnie and Penguin to Launceston.• Return to Launceston for flights home approx 1900 hrs• Optionally extend your stay in Tasmania for flights or ferry next day. The CSR includes 51 wells and stretches 2,013 kilometres from Halls Creek to Wiluna in Western Australia. Canning Stock Route Tour

Day 1 – Alice Springs depart 7 am for Tanami Track with stops at Tillmouth Well and Yuendumu. Visit the World renowned Warlu Aboriginal Art centre here. Remote desert travel via Renner Springs, and Tanami Gold Mine to camp that evening under the stars near Rabbit Flat. BLD

Day 2 - After breakfast, we depart to see more remote old mines, and cross the WA border. We arrive Halls Creek Hotel for overnight.  B, L, D

Day 3 – Leaving Halls Creek we take the Tanami Track road south toward Alice Springs and Wolf Creek Crater. We travel via Ruby Plains, and vast cattle station still owned and operated by S. Kidman & Co the pioneering pastoralist who ruled the cattle country of the late 18 & 1900s.  We travel by and see Wolfe Creek Crater, the world 2nd largest meteorite crater, before arrival at the Aboriginal community and owned cattle station of Billilluna, the start of the Canning Stock Route. From here we pass by waterholes of Lake Gregory (bird watchers paradise) by the Paraku Indigenous Protected Area and check out the birds and wildlife.
   

Paruku is the Walmajarri name for Lake Gregory. Paruku/Lake Gregory is the only lake in the region with a reliable source of fresh water for large numbers of birds and other animals, supporting over 70 species of waterbirds and 175 aquatic species. Surrounded by hundreds of kilometres of arid desert lands, these wetland oases are fed from a catchment in the south-east Kimberley region. More than 100,000 birds visit the wetlands regularly, with up to 60,000 estimated at Mulan Lake at any one time.

Paruku IPA encompasses a variety of desert and semi-desert landscapes undulating red sand plains, salt pans and occasional dunes with stunted eucalyptus. It is dotted with acacias and spinifex, flood plains with swathes of short grasses and low shrubs, and alluvial plains and sand rises.
We visit Bloodwood Bore and Wells 51 and 50, before stopping for our overnight camp at the restored Well 49, the Crystal Well.

Day 4 – On the track again we explore Breaden Pool and Godfrey's tank – named in 1896 after members of David Carnegie’s expedition. We stop at Wells 48 and 47 then it’s into the sand dunes with their unique vegetation and wildlife to arrive at Well 46 for overnight.

Day 5 - We are now in the Great Sandy Desert and check out Wells 45 & 44, and take a break at Gravity Lakes. From Well 43 we head over the Guli Lake System and past Well 42 to stop for overnight amongst the trees near Helena Springs track.

Day 6  - Enjoy the remote early morning nature of this area before arrival at Well 41, known by the locals as 'Tiru'. This was a popular resting spot for the drovers due to good feed here for their cattle. We head south to cross Lake Tobin then to Well 39, where lots of water here attracts abundant bird life including budgerigars. Wardabunni Rockhole & Well 38 is reached today, where we enjoy another night under the stars.

Day 7 - After another great breakfast we arrive at Well 37, where lay the graves of 3 early drovers who died under mysterious circumstances. We learn more of the mystery and their fate at the site, and numerous other stories of early pioneers before Well 36. Travelling on we visit Well 33 then overnight in comfortable and modern style rooms at the Kunawarritji Aboriginal Community. Here we have abundant water and a chance to catch up on personal laundry.

Day 8 – At Kunawarritji Aboriginal Community and store we can do personal shopping and restock some essential supplies & fuel. These remote communities are always fascinating insights into remote desert life. Onwards we visit Wells 32, 31 and 30 (known as Duna Jinnda). After lunch we travel to Thring Rock, a sandstone outcrop with a lookout we climb for a great view of the landscape, before our overnight camp nearby.

Day 9 - More sand dunes today before Well 27, then the rebuilt Well 26 with good drinking water. We take a break here and stock up with water, then travel to shady Well 25 for lunch under the Desert Oaks before arrival at Well 24 for overnight camp. 

Day 10 – We are now also on part of the Talawana Track, which is a direct route to Newman. We see the Capricorn Roadhouse Fuel dump where many Canning trekkers still arrange fuel drops from Newman. Travel on to Georgia Bore, which was sunk in the 1970’s by CRA survey crews. Lake Disappointment is a large salt lake and our goal today. Named by explorer Frank Hann after he was expecting to find a freshwater lake. Overnight and sunset by the lake shore at Lake Disappointment.

Day 11 – We travel several kilometres by the shores of Lake Disappointment to Savory Creek crossing (or diversion crossing depending on water levels) and Well 19. After lunch we visit Onegunyah Rock Hole before majestic Durba Springs where we spend 2 nights in this restful shaded and well watered area.

Day 12 - Durba Springs is known as 'Jilikuru' by the local Martu people, who made this area their home. Elaborate Aboriginal rock art sites are here, and we walk through the Durba Hills area viewing these rock art galleries. Enjoy lunch back at camp and a relaxing easy afternoon as the drovers and cattle did in the good old days.

Day 13 – We leave this little haven and head for Well 16 with its challenging history then the lookout at Well 15 enables a wider view of this incredible landscape. Wells 14 and 13 are visited, then the restored Well 12 with good drinking water.   Then on to wells 11 & 10 and MacConkey Hill for our camp under a starry sky.

Day 14 – Today takes us to Weld Springs (Well 9) and the edge of Glen-Ayle Station, where WA’s first premier John Forrest built a fort in 1874 to defend against Aborigines. We travel off the CSR here to Glen-Ayle Station and then to Wiluna for refuelling, before overnight camp at the southern end of Canning Stock Route.

Day 15 - From our last camp here we travel to the BHP mining town of Newman and check into our welcome hotel after lunch. You can explore Newman or just catch up with all those photos at your leisure. Group dinner this evening in Newman.

Days - 15-19 - Alice Springs tour returns on Gunbarrel Highway & Great Central Road (surveyed by Len Beddell) via Carnegie Station, Everard Junction, Warburton (great Aboriginal art work), Giles Weather Station, Schwerin Mural Crescent, Docker River, Uluru, overnight Alice Spring overnight completes 5pm Day 19

If returning to Newman / Broome

• Day 16 – Today you have time for an optional morning tour of the monster BHP Mt Whaleback mine. Our CSR Tour ends at 10 am after breakfast and for those flying we will transfer you to Newman airport for your flight to Perth.
• Alternatively if travelling back to Broome with us we depart after the mine tour and lunch. We travel through spectacular mineral rich Pilbara country, via Roy Hill, the new Gina Reinhart Iron Ore mine, visit the famous and impressive rock formation that is the Marble Bar then overnight in accommodation in Marble Bar township.
• Optional Day 17 – Visit the old Comet Mine before we travel mineral rich mining and Mesa areas of Shay Gap, before we cross the mighty De Grey River. Enjoy lunch at spectacular 80 Mile Beach, then a stop at Sandfire to arrive Broome late afternoon. BL
