Journey from Tropical North Queensland into the ancient landscapes of Outback Queensland on a six-day private 4WD dinosaur and natural-history adventure.

Travel from Cairns across the Atherton Tablelands to the remarkable volcanic country of Undara before entering some of Australia's richest dinosaur and fossil regions. Meet Hughie's prehistoric relatives in Hughenden, discover enormous marine reptiles at Richmond, explore Australia's great dinosaur fossil collection at Winton and visit the town that gave the Muttaburrasaurus its name.

The journey then crosses the Queensland interior through to Townsville before following the tropical coast north to Cairns.

TOUR DETAILS

DAY 1 – CAIRNS → ATHERTON TABLELANDS → UNDARA

Depart Cairns and climb into the cooler landscapes of the Atherton Tablelands, travelling through changing rainforest, agricultural country and open savannah.

Continue through Mareeba and Mount Garnet towards Undara Volcanic National Park, where the landscape reveals an entirely different chapter of Australia's ancient geological history.

Explore the extraordinary Undara Lava Tubes, created by massive volcanic eruptions and subsequent lava flows. Access to the sensitive cave system is by guided tour. The Cairns–Undara journey is around 260 km and is sealed.

Depending on arrival time, enjoy a guided lava-tube experience, wildlife viewing or a walk through the surrounding savannah landscape.

DAY 2 – UNDARA → KENNEDY DEVELOPMENTAL ROAD → HUGHENDEN

Depart Undara early and travel south through the vast Gulf Savannah and Queensland interior.

The journey follows the Kennedy Developmental Road towards Hughenden, providing a genuine 4WD outback experience. Sections of this route remain unsealed, with the Flinders Shire recommending 4WD or high-clearance vehicles; conditions can change substantially following rain.

Arrive in Hughenden, one of the principal towns of Australia's Dinosaur Trail.

Visit the Flinders Discovery Centre, where the museum explores the region's dinosaurs, fossils, First Nations culture, pastoral history and railway heritage. The centre is closely associated with the Muttaburrasaurus and Hughenden's rich fossil record.

Time permitting, explore Hughenden's dinosaur sculptures and historic town centre.

DAY 3 – HUGHENDEN → RICHMOND → WINTON

Depart Hughenden for the relatively short journey west to Richmond, approximately 112–115 km away.

Millions of years ago, much of this region lay beneath the vast Eromanga Sea, leaving behind an extraordinary collection of marine fossils.

Visit Kronosaurus Korner, Richmond's major fossil museum, where the emphasis moves from land-based dinosaurs to the enormous marine reptiles that once inhabited inland Australia.

See fossils and reconstructions of creatures from Australia's prehistoric inland sea, including Kronosaurus and other ancient marine reptiles.

After lunch, continue south-west across open Mitchell Grass Downs towards Winton, approximately 220–235 km from Richmond. Australia's Dinosaur Trail identifies Richmond, Hughenden and Winton as its three principal dinosaur centres.

Arrive in Winton in the late afternoon and explore this historic outback town.

DAY 4 – WINTON → AUSTRALIAN AGE OF DINOSAURS → MUTTABURRA

This morning experience one of the major highlights of the journey — the Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum of Natural History.

Located approximately 24 km south-east of Winton on a dramatic mesa known as The Jump-Up, the museum holds the world's largest collection of Australian dinosaur fossils.

After lunch, leave Winton and travel approximately 225 km to Muttaburra.

Visit the Muttaburrasaurus Interpretation Centre.

Muttaburra has a remarkable place in Australian palaeontology. In 1963 local grazier Doug Langdon discovered fossilised dinosaur remains near the Thomson River. The animal was subsequently named Muttaburrasaurus langdoni after both the town and its discoverer. The interpretation centre displays a replica of the dinosaur together with reproductions of bones and the story of the discovery.

This stop adds a particularly strong connection between the fossil record and the actual Queensland community where one of Australia's best-known dinosaurs was discovered.

DAY 5 – MUTTABURRA → ARAMAC → TORRENS CREEK → CHARTERS TOWERS

Depart Muttaburra early for the journey east towards the Queensland coast.

Travel through Aramac and remote cattle country before joining the route towards Torrens Creek and the Flinders Highway.

This is one of the great contrasts of the journey: leaving the dry grasslands and cattle country of inland Queensland and progressively travelling towards the wetter tropical east coast.

The Muttaburra–Townsville journey is approximately 550 km and should be treated as a full travelling day. Sections of roads in this region are unsealed, making the 4WD format particularly appropriate.

Continue east through the Charters Towers region and into Townsville.

On arrival, enjoy an evening along The Strand, overlooking the Coral Sea and Magnetic Island.

DAY 6 – CHARTERS TOWERS →TOWNSVILLE → INGHAM → CARDWELL → CAIRNS

Begin the final day with a short exploration of Townsville. Depending on timing, enjoy views from Castle Hill or take a morning stroll along The Strand.

Travel north along Queensland's tropical coast through sugar-cane country towards Ingham and Cardwell.

Pause at Cardwell for views across Hinchinbrook Channel and the mountainous landscapes of Hinchinbrook Island.

Continue through the Wet Tropics, with the option for a lunch or refreshment stop around Mission Beach before continuing north through Innisfail towards Cairns.

The Townsville–Cairns route is approximately 348 km and around four hours direct driving, although the scenic stops make this a relaxed full-day touring experience.

Arrive in Cairns in the late afternoon, completing a remarkable circuit through tropical rainforest, volcanic landscapes, ancient inland seas, dinosaur country, remote cattle country and Queensland's tropical coast.
